Mastic for the roof - how to protect yourself from leaking?

Application spectrum of

At the heart of the component composition of this material is a mixture of bitumen with various additives. In order not to form a precipitate, anionic or cationic surfactants are mixed in the composition. Asbestos, talc, talcomagnesite, limestone and chalk can also be added. Mastic is excellent for waterproofing, sealing, priming and other construction works. With great success it is used for work with the facade. In roofing works, mastic is used for insulation from moisture, surface restoration.

Note! Mastic can be successfully applied for both internal and external works.

The main advantage of this material is the long life of the structures that have been processed. It is very convenient and unpretentious to use. So, it can be used in any climatic conditions, with temperature fluctuations from +80 to -30 degrees Celsius. The main advantages are the following:

  • Creation of a seamless elastic and durable coating;
  • High waterproofing performance;
  • Any surface can be machined;
  • Long service life even in areas with stagnant water;
  • High mechanical stability;
  • No shrinkage;
  • High maintainability.

Varieties of material

Bitumen for roofing differs in its components. First of all, the differences concern the content of the bitumen itself. So mastic N1 has 98.5% bitumen, N2 - 94.7%, N3 - 91%.Also, they differ in the components that make up the composition, which help to reduce material costs. Bituminous mastics are divided into several types: rubber bituminous, calc-bituminous, latex, mastic insula, kukersolnye, butyl rubber and oil.

The type of mastic depends on the filler, which is added to it. Each kind of material has its own conditions for application. So, rubber and oil mastic have excellent frost resistance, but they can be applied only at plus temperature. Important! Before using the mastic, it is necessary to familiarize yourself with the conditions of its application.

The material to which lacquer-salt is added becomes significantly better than conventional mastic. So, a layer of 2 millimeters of such material is equivalent to 4 millimeters of simple bitumen. Such a mixture can be prepared independently at home. For this, bitumen is melted, rosin and lacquer are added to it. However, the price of such homemade mastic will be higher than bought. For the repair and installation of roofing, this material is ideal.

Mastic for roofing in practice

Bituminous mastic for roofing requires special surface preparation for its application. For this, the treated area is cleaned of old coating, dust and dirt. After such a serious intervention in the surface structure, it is recommended to prime it. If the material is metal or wood, then it also has to be degreased. For the roof, the most optimal thickness of the applied mastic will be three millimeters. The consumption of the material depends on the cracks that will be embedded and the area of work.

Important! Mastic is a chemical substance, therefore it is necessary to take protective measures to work with it.

To change the consistency of the mass, you can use a solvent, toluene and white spirit. Before applying the mass to the elements of the roof, it is thoroughly mixed. Keep the material in a metal box away from possible sources of fire. It should be taken into account that mastic can reach temperatures of up to 150 degrees Celsius during operation, so you should not forget about the rules of safe operation.
