Polyethylene gas pipeline: the main advantages of
Compared to steel pipes, polyethylene gas pipes have a number of advantages. First, a longer service life, which on average is 50 years. The reason is that they are not subject to corrosion. Secondly, they are 3-4 times lighter than metal pipes. This facilitates the installation and transport process. Thirdly, do not require any special electrochemical protection, resistant to corrosive media. Fourth, the environmental safety of the material, it does not harm the environment and human health.
Fifth, the low cost of both the pipes themselves and the installation. In addition, the installation takes quite a bit of time, because in the process you do not need to use any technique. Only butt welding of polyethylene pipes is carried out. Sixth, do not need to do additional waterproofing.

In Russia, the efficiency and durability of polyethylene pipes have also been fully appreciated. Today they are used for gas pipelines with a pressure of up to 1.2 MPa. But in fact very recently the use of this material was limited. However, for 15 years of operation polyethylene pipes showed that they can be used for high pressure gas pipelines.
They are manufactured in Russia in accordance with GOST R 50838-95.
Polyethylene pipes for gas: scope of their use
Polyethylene pipes for gas supply are used only in specific( limited) spheres. We will describe them:
- Apply them only for underground laying. For wiring in residential areas they are not used, because aggressive air environment shortens the shelf life of the material and, moreover, it does not meet the proper safety precautions. The houses use only metal pipes.
- It is forbidden to use them in areas where there is high seismicity( more than 6 points), air temperature is less than -45 ° С.Also pipes I and II of category can not be used in settlements and where any transitions through obstacles will be arranged.
Technical characteristics
Two brands of such pipes are produced: PE-80 and PE-100 , the wall thickness of which is 2.3 mm and 3.5 mm, respectively. The former are used in systems with a pressure of 4-6 atmospheres, the latter with a working pressure of 3-12 atmospheres. They look like long sections, which reduces the number of places for docking, that is, simplifies installation. The temperature of their operation should vary from -15 ° C to +40 ° C.
They are transported at t not lower than -10 ° C.Shelf life until installation is about 2 years. At the same time they should be under a canopy in unheated buildings. During the installation process, the pipes are joined by special elements and parts( couplings).Laying of polyethylene pipes is strictly under the ground. In those places where there is a withdrawal system and the transition to the house, use metal pipes.
