Advantages: covers for upholstered furniture

Upholstered furniture loses its appearance over time, upholstery is erased, fades. One way to preserve the original appearance of the furniture is to use covers for sofas and armchairs. You can either buy them or make them yourself.

Using a case has several advantages.:

  1. If restoration is expensive, then the manufacture of a cover is much easier and more affordable process, which does not require special preparation. Anyone can make a simple case if he takes this matter responsibly and without haste.
  2. The banner is also not suitable for all sofas, for example, if you need to disassemble the mechanism of the sofa, so often the cover is simply pulled over the sofa and pillows.
  3. A cover is necessary if the house has pets, it will protect the furniture not only from wool, but also from scratches. The cover is easy to remove and wash, and the sofa upholstery will remain in its original form.
  4. You can sew several covers, which will allow you to update the appearance of sofas and armchairs several times. If desired, you can sew covers of different styles and with their help change the interior of the room as you wish.

To sew a cover with your own hands, you need to choose a fabric, get all the tools you need for sewing and get to work.

Tailoring of covers on upholstered furniture

When choosing a fabric, first of all, you need to focus on the design of the room, the cover should be combined with any elements of the room. We can say that the cover is one of the accents in the room. It is good if the fabric resonates with curtains and with small objects in the room.

If the cover is made on a sofa, which is used as a sleeping place, then the fabric for it must be strong and wear-resistant.

Most often, synthetics are taken for this. Do not forget about safety for health - the fabric should be of high quality, not have a pungent odor. You need to pay attention to cotton and linen fabrics.

As a rule, covers for upholstered furniture are made of the following fabrics:

  1. Isoprene-based fabric that looks very similar to genuine leather. Puffs do not form on it, and any liquid spilled onto the fabric is easily removed with a rag without a trace.
  2. The flock fabric on a dense basis, as a rule, has a special adhesive base and a velvet surface. It has high strength, bright color and is easy to wash.
  3. Nubuck fabric is also similar to real leather, but is most often used for any institutions and institutions, for example, in hospitals. It is not used at home, it looks unpresentable.

The main thing is that the color and texture of the fabric for sewing the cover coincides with the general interior of the room and complement it.

You need to start with the calculations. Despite the fact that they are quite simple, you should take this stage very seriously - a small error can spoil the final result. So, you need to add the length and width of the upholstered furniture and then multiply this amount by two. Since the standard width of the fabric is 1 m 50 cm, this is enough.

You can also reduce the consumption of fabric, for this you should measure the sofa and draw patterns in scale, not forgetting the width of the material.

Be sure to consider allowances for seams, they should be at least 7 cm. The pattern consists of several parts of a rectangular shape, if the cover is made for a standard sofa.

You can also sew pillow covers, then you need two identical parts:

  • It is better to choose plain fabrics, they are more economical;
  • A fabric with a pattern, with geometric patterns must be combined at the seams, so the material consumption in this case is respected;
  • If desired, you can add decorative elements to the finished cover - bows, ribbons.

After choosing the fabric and drawing up a pattern for sewing the cover, you can proceed directly to sewing.

How to sew furniture covers

In order to sew furniture covers, you will need: a sewing machine, meter, ruler, large pins, scissors, durable thick threads, chalk or soap for tags. The fabric needs to be washed and ironed well so that subsequently there is no deformation of the finished product.

After this, you need to start drawing up a pattern. We have already talked about how best to do this. You can use tracing paper or newspapers. The first step is to measure all parts of upholstered furniture, including armrests. If the parts have any unusual shape, then they will need to be drawn to a rectangle. Do not forget to add 7 cm to each seam for seams.

Further actions are as follows.:

  1. The cut out details of the pattern are laid out on the fabric, and then they need to be circled along the seam lines.
  2. Draw a cut line, it should deviate from the contour by 7 cm, lay out the details in the direction of the shared thread.
  3. You need to cut on an absolutely flat and solid surface, best on a clean floor without carpets.
  4. Try on all the details of the pattern, pull on upholstered furniture, not forgetting the sidewalls and armrests, it is very convenient in this case to use large pins to fix the details.
  5. If during fitting any errors were found in the cut, then you need to eliminate them at this stage.
  6. If the size of the cover does not match the upholstered furniture, then you need to adjust them and try on again.
  7. Cut off excess fabric, reduce allowances by 4 cm, overcast all edges with a sewing machine.
  8. Try and sew everything again.

If everything was done correctly, you get a wonderful cover for furniture. If necessary, you can insert an elastic band into the cover so that it is more convenient to pull it on.

Making covers on the sides of the sofa

To make a cover for the sidewall of the sofa, you can use the same sequence of actions as when sewing a full cover for upholstered furniture.

Namely:

  • Choose fabric for sidewalls;
  • Measure them, make patterns;
  • Transfer the patterns to the fabric and cut, not forgetting the allowances;
  • Try again and sew.

For the sides of the sofa you will need the same pieces of fabric that need to be sewn together.
