How to lay a glass insulator

Glass is an advanced welded roll material for waterproofing building structures, analogue of roofing material. Its main difference from other roll materials lies in the fact that the basis of the glass insulation is fiberglass or fiberglass, due to what this roofing becomes non-combustible, has an increased tensile strength and service life of 15 years even under the most unfavorable conditions.

The field of application of glass insulation in construction is extremely high: from the hydroprotection of foundations to the vertical waterproofing of structures in water, for example, bridge supports. It is also widely used for waterproofing roofs, and, unlike roofing felt, it can be used on roofs with any slope, it is important only to correctly choose the brand of glass.

Marking and types of glass-insoles

For the marking of glass-based insulators, alphanumeric marking is used. The letters mean the following:

  • The first letter "X" or "T" defines the basis of the material, canvas or fabric, respectively;
  • The second letter "P" or "K" defines the appearance of the upper layer of the material, a polymer film or coarse granular bedding;
  • The third letter "P" characterizes the bottom layer of the material - polymer film;
  • The numbers in the marking indicate the weight of the material.

When installing roofs, two or more layers of material are usually used to improve reliability, the lower one of which is made of a lining glass with a marking of CCI or HPP, and the upper one is made of roofing, marked HKP or TKP.

Glass-based fiberglass based fiberglass has higher strength characteristics, so it is used on structures experiencing increased loads. Glass canvas based on canvas is usually used for waterproofing foundations or roofs with a slope of up to 10 degrees.

A roll of glass is 1 meter wide, with a strip without a topcoat at one end of the roll, designed to overlap the strips. The length of the roll is 10 or 15 meters.

Required materials and tool

For covering the roof with a glass insulator, you need:

  • Glass lining and lining. Before buying, you need to calculate the required amount of material, taking into account the overlapping overlaps and the edges of the roof;
  • Primer or primer, polymer or bitumen mastic;
  • Cement-sand mixture for sealing potholes and shells in concrete;
  • Sharp knife for cutting material;
  • Soldering Lamp;

Hand roller. It can be replaced by a piece of pipe with a diameter of not less than 20 cm.

Technology of stacking of glass-fiber

  1. Preparation of a concrete surface before laying a glass insulation is to clean it from debris, dust, dirt, as well as stains of solvents, oils and resins. The old coating is removed if it is easily removed from the surface. If the concrete base has sharp edges, protrusions, then they must be cut and ground. Potholes are wiped with a cement-sand mixture. The concrete surface is covered with polymer primer or cold bituminous primer in one or two layers. This improves the adhesion of the glass insulator to the substrate when fusing. When laying a glass insulator on a wooden roof, it is necessary to make a continuous crate of edging boards or moisture-proof plywood and cover it with a mastic on a bituminous or polymer basis.

  2. . The glass is insulated starting from the cutting of the material. Glasswool is rolled in place, leaving allowances for a hem by 20 cm on each side. It is also necessary to take into account the margin for the overlap of the strips - for this purpose, a strip of material is provided on the roll of the glass insulator without a top layer 10 cm wide. After the layout and cutting, the strips are again rolled into separate rolls.

  3. Begin laying from the lower edge of the roof so that the strip for overlapping rolls is facing the roof. The first layer is laid underlay glass of the brand HPP or TPP.The roll is slightly rolled out, the heated portion is heated uniformly with a blowtorch to a white color of the polymer film and pressed against the roof by rolling the glass with a hand roller. Again, slightly roll the roll and repeat the operations described above.

  4. glass insulating technology The next strip is overlapped by 10 cm, on the edge of the previous strip without topcoat. The number of layers of the lining glass is dependent on the slope of the roof. On flat roofs with a possible stagnation of water, it is recommended to lay two or three layers of glass lining underlay, shifting the strips so that each next layer overlaps the joints of the previous one. Places of docking of the coating with pipes, abutments to the wall, ravines are additionally glued with strips of glass-fiber with an overlap on both surfaces.
  5. The final layer of roofing glass with granite sprinkling is laid in a similar way, carefully rolling the roller and avoiding the formation of air bubbles.

The service life of a roof covered with glass insulation is 15 years or more, following all recommendations. If necessary, the roof can be repaired by laying individual sheets of glass in places of damage without removing the main coating.
