What material is better to build a house

Building a wooden house

An eternal question, the answer to which even the architects of ancient Atlantis and three pigs from a fairy tale did not know. First, try to determine what the word "better" means for you, as applied to your new building, and we will delicately wedge into your reflections by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of various building materials and remember that it is exclusively about areas of private development.

We propose before the beginning of design and construction to designate the long-term appointment of the house, which you finally decided to build, and then free to transfer to your descendants. Conditionally, we will divide future households into three groups:

  1. Holiday cottage for seasonal( usually May-September) accommodation. We have already written about them in detail, but they are simply obliged to mention them in this article.
  2. Capital dacha for a large family, allowing its individual members to live comfortably in nature even in winter.
  3. Country house, cottage, manor. Mass migration to the suburbs has already begun, so the demand in this segment of the market is the highest.

The goals are defined, it remains only to find the basic material for the architectural design of their future possessions.

Conditions of country life should differ from the panel-concrete pressure of megacities. Since we are talking about suburban housing construction, the first and best material for building a house that comes to mind is a tree in any of its incarnations. Advantages of natural wood are obvious: low thermal conductivity, quick installation and endless variations of finishes, ecological cleanness, natural beauty and much more.

House of frame-panel structures

Wooden house from round timber
For the construction of houses from the list of 1 and 2 the best material is not found. Only in the first case it makes sense to use panel and skeleton constructions, which if desired can be erected with their own hands. In the second variant, everything is much more serious. Competently to combine a log house from a round timber or a bar, even correctly to put ready rounded logs only experts are capable, the truth, they do it very quickly( and it is very expensive).A skillfully made frame with proper care( waterproofing, protection from bark beetles, painting, impregnation, etc.) can serve its owners up to 100 years.

Wooden houses have only two drawbacks:

  • The patriarchal technology of drying construction timber has long been forgotten;in the best case, you buy a material for building a house with a specific humidity of 16-20%, at worst - twigs may grow from your walls. In frame versions, the process of "natural drying" is not so noticeable, but the technological draft of the logging will have to wait at least a year. Immediately carry out finishing work and settle in such a housing, we do not advise you.
  • The category of fire safety of wooden structures is the lowest. Cottages and summer houses burn with frightening constancy, often through the fault of the unreasonable masters themselves. Pay special attention to in-house communications: electrical wiring, gas supply system, and do not give children matches.

Brick mansion

It is clear that here we are already entering the category of 3 country houses. We are building thoroughly, therefore we take into account the centuries-old experience of our ancestors. If you found brickwork to be the best material for building a house, then be prepared for some surprises.

  • Financial costs: a private house made of brick with an area of 200 m2 with a rough finish will cost you 4-6 million rubles( all depends on the region, quality of work and construction materials, season and other factors).Agree that such a construction requires serious preparation.
  • When choosing a project or in the course of the work, the developer invited by you may not take into account the characteristics of the ground for the foundation, the weight of the structure, some minor factors associated with the installation of load-bearing elements, and 3-4 years later the house will crawl.
    Brick mansion

To search for a "good" raw material for brickwork, a skilled team of builders and supervise their work( which is 3-4 months) will have to do it yourself. But in the end: a large warm mansion, remote from the city noise and smog, a full set of communal amenities, reliable walls and the prospects of paradise life.

Aerated concrete, slag and foam blocks

House of foam blocks

House made of aerated concrete

House of cinder blocks

The scope of these materials for building a house we do not dare to treat unequivocally. Foam concrete, used in multi-story building( series 601-611) seems to have already confirmed its building quality. The use of lightweight blocks in country conditions is also not uncommon. Disadvantages of these building materials, you will most likely find in the process of exploitation, so let's talk about the merits.

  • thermal conductivity: any porous or fibrous material used in building a house has better thermal insulation properties because of its structure;
  • simplicity of installation: the blocks are large and light, they are sawed by an ordinary hacksaw to the required size;less transportation problems;
  • finishing works: making the inner or outer walls is almost as simple as in a wooden structure;
  • price: foam concrete, aerated concrete and slagblocks can be safely attributed to the category of economy class, because the houses of these materials are half the price of real chopped or better brick.

As you can see, the space for a potentially steward is truly unlimited, think, count and embody your dreams.
