Features of laying paving slabs on sand

Laying of paving slabs on sand is most often done with independent paving of pedestrian paths or areas in country houses, in cottages.

Why in such places? Because such masonry technology is not designed for heavy loads.

For the creation of paths or squares in a city with large cross-country capacity, other options are used.

Masonry in such cases are made on a concrete foundation or crushed stone.

These basics have proven to be more robust, robust and reliable. How to lay the tiles with your own hands on a sandy foundation, we will consider step by step.

The first stage - the base

For the correct execution of the work, an instruction has been created, according to which, in the future, the paved path will not deform and break.

Any kind of work begins with preparation. To lay the paving slab on the sand, you need to prepare a so-called "bed", but first the layout of the area is done.

Layout of tiles

The most convenient way of marking is to pull the thread along the edges of the intended path( site) to the pre-arranged pegs.

They can be both metal and wooden. Pegs should be installed as often as possible, so that the thread does not sag.

The distance from it to the ground should be at the level at which it is planned to complete the laying, that is, the surface of the tile must be in contact with the cord.

It is advisable to walk through the marked territory again, make sure that the place is chosen correctly, if necessary, make adjustments.

When the place is selected and marked, work begins on preparing the "box".A layer of earth about 20 centimeters deep is removed.

All the pebbles, roots, branches and other garbage are carefully cleaned. The "bed" is covered with geotextiles.

Such a method with the use of this material will promote the infiltration of water, and prevent the germination of weeds through the seams of the tile.

The second stage - the installation of curbs

Along the perimeter of the future path with their own hands is a trench to install curbs. You can use paving stones of a larger size or finished material.

The height of the border should go level with the tile or lower by 1-2 centimeters. This way of doing the work allows the water not to linger on the track.

This information should be taken into account when placing, because the height of the borders is different.

If it is several centimeters larger than the total planned height of the masonry, then the trench is made even deeper precisely at this distance.

Stacking technology

Borders are fixed on sand-cement mortar( 1: 3, respectively).After they are set to dry, you need to wait one day.

There are rules according to which the solution is placed strictly under each curb, it is not necessary to fill the entire trench with it at once.

The installation of curbs at this stage allows later to lay the paving slab more evenly: the sand will not crumble around the edges, the paving itself will not move.

The third stage - the creation of a sand cushion

Now you need a layer of fine sand, whose height should be about 10 centimeters. About which sand is better to use, will be described below.

The resulting surface is leveled by rakes, abundantly wetted with water.

The next step is to compact the wet sand layer. To do this, a plate compactor is used.

If this method of ramming is not suitable, for example, because of the small distances between the borders, or it simply does not exist, then you can use a tool prepared by yourself: a steel or wooden plate is attached to the base of the bar, for convenience handles are made on both sides of the bar.

Works on compaction of the base can be seen on the video.

After tamping, it is necessary to wait a certain amount of time to allow the sand to dry.

If preparation is conducted in sunny weather and the work area is small, then it will be enough to wait 2-3 hours, on cloudy day - one day.

In rainy weather, it is generally not advisable to lay paving slabs, because all technology is broken.

The next step is laying the pipes across the track at a distance of two to three meters. Thus, the distribution of the upper( last) layer of sand will be even, the laying as a whole is strengthened.

Fourth stage - laying pavers, grouting

Preliminary tiling is done on the future track in order to understand which way to apply and what rules to use to place the pattern.

Now you can begin to build a pavement path or a platform. Tiles should be stacked "on their own", slightly pressing into the base, leveling with a rubber hammer.

Between the tiles it is necessary to leave clearances of a few millimeters.

When performing any patterns with your own hands, the tile has to be cut, but it needs to be done only after the entire coating has been laid.

Before cutting the tile is applied to the future place and draw a line along which this work will be done with the help of the Bulgarian.

At the end of work on the surface scatter fine sand, and the usual broom begin to quietly wipe the seams between the tiles.

Technology eliminates the presence of seeds and roots of any plants in the sand, it can be sieved first.

You can use a different method of grouting: a dry sand-cement mixture is used, which is filled with water after the work is finished. Thus, the tile seizes with each other.

After grouting the paved path is poured with water, all the dirt, the remains of sand( cement) are washed away.

Varieties of paving slabs

Before you start laying the paving slab, you need to decide on which version to use:

  • Gzhel-tile, which has a patterned pattern of different sizes;
  • Clover - can be rough and smooth, which creates an unusual appearance. And it can also be embossed and smooth. Square shape with cut corners has a relief clover. Smooth - more complex in structure;
  • Sota - the name speaks for itself: it is a hexagon;
  • Wave - has a surface similar to slate;
  • Parquet - tiles, which have an uneven surface, there is an external resemblance to a candy "toffee";
  • Scales - with its help you can give a volume to a sidewalk or a platform. Has a similarity with fish scales.

The tile is widely spread Krakow or in another way it is called Krakow paving stone.

Clover is produced in Russia, so it is created taking into account operation in all weather conditions.

The color range of this tile is broad: gray, burgundy, dark green, yellow, etc. Any design, drawing and design can be realized.

Its popularity is due to its strength, reliability, it resists chemical attack, it is easy to install.

Types of tiles

Which sand should I use?

When laying pavers, they usually do not think about which sand is better to use, whether there are varieties of it and what are the features. The difference in this material is.

Two types of sand are used for construction purposes: quarry and river.

Quarry sand is formed by the weathering of rocks, which for a long time are destroyed, and sand is deposited near.

Particles are obtained in different fractions: both small and large. Such material by nature can not be 100 percent pure, clay is often mixed.

Prior to work, quarry sand must be sieved. Over its uneven surface, this material provides better coupling with components during construction work.

River sand has a smooth surface that is processed for a long time in water, due to this it has a more aesthetic appearance, is an environmentally friendly material, and impurities are absent.

The price of this material is below its career counterpart. The moisture passes well through the river sand, without lingering.

When laying sidewalk tiles with their own hands, this property of river sand is the best for work. The moisture should not destroy the paved path.

Features of laying paving slabs

So that when laying paving stones with your own hands there were no questions, we will consider some rules of work.

The base must be level, avoiding garbage.

Before starting work, the whole tile must be looked at for its integrity. It can also be convex, concave and curved. These tiles can be used in places where cutting is planned.

This work is carried out at the very end.

Clearances between tiles are necessary, they fulfill the role of temperature seams. With temperature changes, the tile may begin to expand.

Therefore, if you make a joint with your own hands in the joint, then in time you can detect deformation of the entire coating.

To create a durable coating, laying technology should not be violated.

To avoid the formation of a large amount of dust when cutting tiles, it is first cut and then split. Cut the entire surface to the end is not worth it.

The tiling is laid "on its own", starting from the curbs.

Using tile clover extends the possibilities of creating an unusual design.

Instead of curbs, you can use temporary wooden formwork, which after laying the tiles are replaced with a larger pavers or curb.

When laying paving slabs on a sand base with your own hands, despite the throughput of sand, you should make a slight slope of the entire path for the rapid removal of moisture from the surface of the tile.

Using the method of pavers paving on sand, if necessary, it becomes possible to easily dismantle the entire laid out area.

In rainy weather, work is not advisable.

When planning the use of a paved area for car parking or any other heavy equipment, it is not advisable to use a sand base. For these purposes, there is a step-by-step instruction for creating a concrete foundation.

Sand base for laying paving slabs is used in country or suburban areas, where there is a large load on the surface of the track( platform).
