Solvent P-5 - complex chemistry in construction

What is this solvent?

In the modern paint and varnish industry, a large number of various organic and inorganic substances are used as solvents. To improve the quality of the products, manufacturers usually use mixtures. They are called numbered.

The organic composition of P-5 is used to dilute various paints to obtain working viscosity, as well as to thoroughly clean the paint tool and equipment.

The popularity of this mixture is explained by its excellent performance characteristics. A large number of components that make up this mixture, determines its broad specialization and, in addition, the possibility of dissolving a variety of organic substances.

Characteristics and application P-5

This solvent in its appearance represents a completely colorless or slightly yellowish transparent liquid without visible suspended impurities. This mixture has a rather sharp specific odor.

Solvent P-5, whose composition includes 30% butyl acetate and acetone

, and 40% toluene , is one of the most active and aggressive. Therefore, its use in work requires special care and accuracy. In some cases, it may be more appropriate to use weak formulations.

This combined mixture is purchased for dilution of paint coatings( varnish-and-paint products), which is based on the resin PSX-LS and PSX LP.In addition, it perfectly interacts with other substances having in the base rubber, polyacrylic and epoxy, silicone resins and other film-forming components.

This combination is added to the varnish-and-paint product in small portions with constant stirring until the final product is given the required viscosity. Shelf life of the finished product does not exceed 1 year from the date of manufacture. Solvent R-5, GOST 7827-74, is produced in appropriate proportions in large mixers in factories, but for laboratory needs it is easy to prepare yourself.

This mixture of solvents is widely used, but it is not universal. In some cases it is more reasonable to use solvent P-5a .It is a derivative of the previous one, and its difference consists only in that the mass fraction of one of the components, namely butyl acetate, should not exceed 30%.

Properly P-5a is used to dilute those paint materials where it is impossible to use a solvent mixture of P-5.

Precautions for operation

These solvent mixtures contain aromatic hydrocarbons, amines, halogenated compounds and ketones that can cause various skin diseases, as well as serious poisoning. Vapors irritate the respiratory tract and eyes.

For long-term exposure, solvents may adversely affect bone marrow and blood. When working with these mixtures, you must wear protective clothing, gloves, a respirator and safety glasses.

In addition, these mixtures are fire and explosive. Work with them can not be near an open fire, smoking, etc. The room where the work takes place must be well ventilated.dangerous air pollution occurs very quickly. Among other things, these mixtures are very aggressive to some plastics.
