Water-based paint for walls

The name of these types of paints speaks for itself. Their solvent is normal water. Such mixtures are the most popular for painting walls for several reasons:

1. Relatively low price. The cost of water-based paints, in comparison with alkyd paints, is not too high, which favorably influences the overall costs for repair. At the same time, this paint has a small consumption per 1 m2 of surface. As simple water dissolves from water-based paints, even standing paint can be easily and quickly diluted with water, which is much cheaper than a solvent.
2. Environmentally friendly. In the process of work, waterborne paints do not emit harmful vapors, like alkyd. In a renovated room, you can spend a lot of time without much harm to well-being.
3. Resistance to dirt. Any spot of dirt, thanks to the fact that it can not penetrate inside the painted surface, can easily be washed off with water.

Among the drawbacks of the paint itself can be identified that it is very afraid of negative temperatures. If the container with the paint is standing in the frost, it will not be possible to use it in the future.

Water-based paints of the type of their base are divided into:

1. Based on PVA.
2. Acrylic.
3. Latex.

Water-based paints based on polyvinyl acetate are their cheapest variety. Of all types of such material is not practical, as it is easily susceptible to contamination. They are used mainly for painting ceilings. The great advantage of such paints is that they have a good vapor permeability, so that the surface can "breathe".Paint based on PVA can not be used in rooms with high humidity.

The basis for acrylic wall paints are acrylic resins. Thanks to them, the material structure becomes dense and does not allow dirt and moisture to pass through. Therefore, they are often used for painting walls in public places, where the probability of contamination is quite high. The drawback of this paint is that it has a low vapor permeability, that is, does not allow the walls to "breathe".

Latex paints are produced on the basis of all known polymer. A thin layer of latex can improve the mechanical resistance of the surface to moisture and dirt, which allows them to be successfully applied in public places. Like acrylic, latex paint quickly dries, lies down a thin and dense layer. It is often used when painting textured wallpaper, when you need to highlight their picture. This paint is very suitable for Venetian plaster or "bark beetle", because it can penetrate deep into the structure of the coating, while laying a thin layer. Alkyd paints

Alkyd paints, or, as they are also called - enamels, differ from water emulsion in that hydrocarbon substances are used as a solvent: gasoline, kerosene, solvent, etc. The structure of the paint itself is similar to latex waterborne, but the process of its drying is not due to the evaporation of water, but due to the oxidative reaction with the participation of oxygen in the air. Thanks to this, alkyd paints dry very quickly.

The main advantage of such paints is their durability, excellent protection of the surface from moisture, mechanical damage. Due to the fact that during application, such a paint forms a thin but sufficiently strong layer, in addition to painting the walls, they are used for processing wooden and metal surfaces, protecting them from rust.

The disadvantage of enamels is a sharp odor, which does not have a very good effect on the human body. Therefore, after completion of work, the room should be carefully ventilated and limited to being in it. Although recently there were enamels, the solvents of which do not emit a sharp odor, it is necessary to use them carefully in a room for painting large surfaces.

Oil paints

A special feature of oil paints is that natural or synthetic oils, as well as drying oils, are used as their solvents. This feature is the reason that such paints for a very long time to dry, while highlighting a not very pleasant smell. It is because of this that oil mixtures for the treatment of internal walls of the premises are used extremely rarely. The advantage of oil paint is its excellent antiseptic properties. Oil and oils can penetrate deep into the pores of the plaster or wood, protecting them from the appearance of fungus or mold. However, this feature has another side of the coin. Thus, a reduced vapor permeability can cause a detachment of the plaster.

The surface layer of such a material can last for a year without repainting. Due to this, oil paints are very often used for outdoor work.

Silicone paint for walls and ceilings

This is a new material in the construction industry. Due to the use of various additives in its production, it has excellent operational properties. Water vapor permeability, moisture resistance and durability - all these qualities the buyer will find in silicone paint. Its main advantage is considered to be a water-wettable layer that forms during application. It allows the surface for a long time to have a pristine appearance, even in places of high humidity.

The disadvantage of such a paint can be considered its price. It is slightly higher than the latex-based water-based emulsion.

Eco-wall paint

The fashion for use in the construction works of environmentally friendly materials has increased the demand for such products. The technology of making eco-colors involves the use in their composition of natural components that are not harmful to the human body. That is why they can be used without any fears for painting the walls in an apartment or house.

The disadvantage of such colors is certainly their price, which is why they try to apply them in a limited number of cases, for example, for painting a children's room. It is also worth noting that eco-paints dry quite slowly, however, without distinguishing any odors.

Application of water-based paint on walls

Procedure:

1. The water-emulsion paint is applied to the surface of the wall with a roller with a long pile. Before the beginning of the work, preparation of both the material and the surface is carried out.
2. The surface of the wall, leveled with putty, must be primed before painting. This is done with a mixture of deep penetration based on PVA.During the priming, the wall is checked for small defects that must be removed.
3. While the primer is drying, paint is prepared. It must be thoroughly mixed to a homogeneous mass. Experts recommend doing this on the eve of the work( about a day) and just before the start. For uniform stirring, use a low-speed drill with a special nozzle in the form of a mixer. If you want, you can change the paint color for the walls before starting the work. To do this, use special colors. However, with them it is necessary to be accurate, because a little without guessing with the consistency, you can not get the required color. If the shade of the walls plays a big role, it is better to do it in specialized stores that have special equipment that accurately dispenses the colors, depending on the chosen palette.
4. Prepared paint is poured into a special trough and the roller is lowered into it. After that, it is rolled out so that the mixture is distributed over its entire surface. Textured paint for walls is applied with a special roller.
5. Apply the paint to the wall, gradually rolling out, until on the surface there is a uniform pattern without divorces.

When painting walls with water-based paint it is better not to apply more than one layer.
