Many associate the concept of "baldachin" with the eastern pomp and richness, but the appearance of this design element is associated with a utilitarian cause. Initially, canopies were used as a comfortable cape, protecting the sleeping person from wind, dust and annoying insects.
In Russia, the prototype of the canopy was a piece of regular calico that covered the baby's cradle. This cloak was practical and reliable: it saved the child from drafts, dust and insect bites. It was the children's cot with the cotton dome and became the ancestor of the four-poster bed.
Types and methods of fastening the canopies
Thanks to the efforts of designers, the functional cape was transformed into a decoration element of the bed, and today the canopy above the bed performs, in the main, a decorative role. According to psychologists, the canopy gives a sleeping person a feeling of peace, comfort and security, so using the canopy in the interior is not only desirable, but also useful.
It is accepted to distinguish the following types of canopies, the frame of which can:
- attach to the pillars of the bed and be placed under the ceiling;
- fastened directly to the ceiling;
- have the form of a tent and be fixed only on bed counters;
- have the form of a circle or square, and the canopy, in this case, is attached to the axis passing through the center of the bed;
- have the shape of a semicircular arc, fastened to the wall at the head of the bed, then in the role of canopy protrudes a piece of cloth, thrown across the frame.
Modern canopies above the bed often have an elaborate shape, are made of textured fabrics or non-woven materials. Racks and a canopy frame are usually made of wood or metal. The choice of materials depends not only on the designer's intention, but also on the financial possibilities of the future owner of the canopy bed.
Baby beds with canopy
Usually parents choose such models for infants and toddlers. Of course, girls like canopies much more than boys. Any little princess will be delighted with such a bed, and the boys can and refuse to sleep under the canopy.
Canopies on the bed of girls are usually made of a material of pink or peach flowers. Other shades are acceptable, but it is preferable that they be gentle and warm. For adolescent girls, the color range can be more diverse.
As for the design, for the kids fit canopies in the form of a tent or frame, giving the lodge the look of a cozy house. More adult girls and young girls will like the drapery at the head of the bed, which will make the room more feminine.
Decorating a child's canopy can be a scattering of bright decorative flowers or strange butterflies. The garland fixed on the baldachin not only gives it an original look, but also solves the problem of night lighting.
Adult canopies
They fulfill the role of a design element, so it is necessary to correctly combine them with the interior of the bedroom. If the room is decorated in a classical style, for the canopy you should use dense smoothly dyed fabric. A thin canopy with flounces or drapes perfectly fits into the interiors in the style of baroque and rococo. A translucent canopy will decorate the bedroom in the oriental style, and a canopy for the bedroom hi-tec is better made of unusual material.
Canopy fabrics
Preferred airy lightweight materials, combined in color and style with the rest of the textiles in the bedroom. Usually canopies are made of silk, organza, satin, marquiset. They are practical and visually do not reduce the space of the room. Sometimes designers recommend to make a canopy from more expensive and dense fabrics, symbolizing prosperity and luxury, for example, from velvet, jacquard, tapestry. In the winter they will make the bed warmer and cozy.
