How to collect a siphon for a sink: scheme

Even if during the repair process the sink in the kitchen or in the bathroom remains the same, then all communications suitable for it should be replaced. First of all, this applies to such a product as a siphon. The operation is quite simple, so you do not need to call a professional plumber. But to avoid unpleasant consequences, you should know how to assemble a siphon for the sink correctly.

Siphon designation

The siphon is a very simple device, but it performs several important functions at once:

• The main purpose is to drain water from the sink into the sewer.
• Due to the presence of a characteristic bend, constantly filled with water, a water lock is formed that does not allow unpleasant odors from the sewer to get into the room.
• The siphon also prevents clogging of the sewer canals due to installed gratings, and many models have easily accessible sumps. Their periodic cleaning will prevent siltation of sewer pipes.

Only a quality installation will ensure the fulfillment of all these functions. Therefore, it is important to know how to properly assemble the siphon. But initially you should choose a new model in the store, and there are not so few varieties of them.

Types of siphons

Siphons are made of the following materials:

• Metal. Usually brass chrome sprayed products, bronze, copper and steel are less common. Metal devices look very beautiful, but brass and copper siphons require careful handling and constant care. To purchase drainage devices from such a material should only be if the product is in plain sight. At the same time, you should still think about how to fit it more organically into the interior of the room. A siphon and a mixer made in the same style will look good.

• Plastic The cheapest and most commonly used models. If the siphon is hidden in a tulip or bedside table, then its appearance fades into the background. However, plastic products have excellent performance: they are not susceptible to corrosion, lightweight, easy to install, not prone to clogging.

There are three main siphon designs:

• Corrugated siphon. It is a curved corrugated hose, the necessary bend of which is formed using a special clamp. The main advantages of such models are low cost and ease of installation. In addition, they do not create a rigid structure. This is convenient if the sink can be moved to another location in the future.
• Pipe. To create a water seal, a special bending of pipes is used in the form of the Latin letter "S". But to clear the blockage, it will be necessary to disassemble the entire structure, so such siphons, very common before, are now not in such demand.
• Bottle. The most popular sink model. Rigid construction with opening sump is the most convenient to use. It can be made of both plastic and metal.

Assembly and installation of a bottle-type device

Assembling the purchased sink siphon begins with checking the completeness of the product. Check all seals and threaded parts for defects.

As a rule, a scheme is attached to each product, which shows how to assemble a siphon for a sink. But even if it is absent, and this is found in cheap models, installation is unlikely to be fraught with great difficulties.

Build in the following order:

• If you replace the old device with a new one, clean the place of attachment to the drain hole in the sink from dirt or elements of the old gasket.
• From the bottom, a drain pipe is pressed against the sink, not forgetting to insert a rubber gasket into it, and from the inside a protective grill, also equipped with a gasket, is inserted into the drain hole. After making sure that the seals are in the correct position, fix the connection with a screw that tightens through the grate.

• A part in the form of a bottle is screwed onto a drain pipe by means of a coupling nut through a conical gasket.

The rubber cone-shaped gaskets are installed in the siphon structure as follows: their wide part should be facing the fastening nut.

All threaded fasteners are tightened by hand. The use of keys is not recommended: it is so easy to spoil these rather fragile details.

• A cap equipped with its own rubber gasket is screwed onto the bottom of the bottle.

During the assembly process, the use of sealant is permissible to ensure complete waterproofing of the joints. It is quite possible to do without it: the design of most siphons allows this. But in any case, do not use sealant when installing the lid of the sump, otherwise it will be difficult to unscrew it. And to do this from time to time will have to eliminate blockages and preventive maintenance.

• A tap is attached connecting the device to the sewer. If its diameter coincides with the diameter of the sewer pipe, then the connection is through a regular conical gasket. If the diameters do not match or if it is impossible to make a threaded connection, you must purchase a rubber cuff of a suitable configuration. A standard gasket is not needed.

After mounting and tightening all connections, a check is made. The sink is filled to the brim, and then descends. If there are no leaks, then the installation of the siphon is excellent.
