Sante Potato History

Sante potatoes appeared in the Russian State Register of Selection Achievements in 1993, but the application for registration was filed much earlier - in 1986. The creator of the variety is the well-known company AGRICO (Netherlands). This corporation is engaged in the cultivation of new varieties and hybrids of potatoes and selling them worldwide.

Sante, by analogy with the foreign Sante, is written through "e" - "Santa", mistakenly called "Santa", sometimes confused with another potato from the Netherlands - Santana.

Potato Sante by Agrico

The variety was bred by the Dutch company Agrico

Potatoes are zoned for the regions of the middle zone, Siberia and the North-West. However, this variety is grown throughout Russia, praised by vegetable growers and the south for its ability to produce good crops on sandy soils, in drought, and the north - for early maturity and disease resistance in wet and cool conditions summers.

Grade description

Sante is a mid-early potato; 85–95 days elapse from emergence to ripening of tubers. In the southern regions during the warm season, from April to October, gardeners and farmers manage to harvest two crops. The bush grows tall, consists of upright shoots, at the end of the growing season becomes spreading. The flowers are white.

Sante potatoes in the field

Sante bushes are tall, blooming with white corollas.

Sante's tubers are oval, the peel is yellow, and the flesh is light yellow. Eyes are small. The variety is characterized by a high content of solids, so the potatoes appear stiff when peeled, they do not blacken and do not crumble during cooking.

Among the advantages there is also good durability, presentation, resistance to mechanical damage. In addition, it is one of the first potatoes that are immune to a complex of viral diseases. Resistance to cancer, late blight and nematodes is mentioned in the State Register, but Sante is affected by rhizoctonia (black scab).

Regarding the yield, there are no official figures. On the AGRICO website, the average number of tubers in the bush is 12. According to reviews of gardeners, tubers grow 100-150 g. Weight depends on weather and care.

Features of growing Sante

Be sure to take the time to preplant. Tubers begin to germinate a month before planting in the light and at room temperature. The manufacturer recommends germinating potatoes with broken off sprouts repeatedly. Removing sprouts more than once may result in poor germination.

Before planting, treat tubers with a preparation with comprehensive protection against diseases and pests, for example, SELEST TOP. The earth should be warmed up by the sun to +10 ° C. Do not plant potatoes after pumpkin, solanaceous, cruciferous. These crops contribute to the accumulation of diseases in the soil. The best predecessors: rye, oats, corn, rape, flax.

Sante is suitable for organic farming. It is not necessary to dig 30 cm into the ground. It is enough to loosen the upper 7-10 cm with the Fokine cutter, make holes and plant potatoes. Depth of embedment - no more than 10 cm, optimally - 8 cm. Potatoes of this variety grow in a large bush, which means that the aisles must be left wide - at least 70 cm, the distance in the row is 35–40 cm.

Use organic matter as fertilizer: humus, compost, you can make fresh manure, but in the previous season, in the fall. Well application rate:

  • a handful of humus;
  • 1 tbsp. l wood ash.

As a top dressing, infusions of herbs, mullein, litter or ready-made mixtures and concentrates containing humic acids of potassium and trace elements (BioGumus, BioMaster) are suitable. Their regular application, every 10-14 days, during the period from germination to flowering will significantly increase productivity. Also, optimum soil moisture has a positive effect on productivity. Water the potatoes once a week if the weather is dry. Watering during budding and flowering is especially important.

Another necessary measure when growing Sante is hilling. During the entire growing season, it will have to be done at least twice: the first time when the shoots grow to a height of 15–20 cm and the second when the bushes rise another 20 cm. If the tops are tall, not yet blooming and have not closed in the aisles, then you can spud a third time. This should be done after irrigation or rain on moist soil.

Harvesting, its purpose

Sante is unstable to certain fungal diseases, so do not delay the harvest, especially if it falls on a cool and rainy autumn season. To prevent diseases from switching from tops to tubers, desiccate with a Reglon super type drug in 10-12 days.

Potato desiccation

After treatment with desiccant, the tops are dehydrated, dry out

Sante is suitable for both manual and machine cleaning. Only store dried and whole tubers for storage. Damaged set aside for consumption primarily or for pet and bird food. From Sante you can cook any dishes that include potatoes: mashed potatoes, soups, winter salads. This Dutch potato produces high-quality chips and delicious fries: hard and crisp on top, and melting and tasty flesh inside.

Our other lifesaver, like the Scarb variety. For our sandy land and in comparison with other varieties, good in all respects. Seeds have not been updated for a long time, do not degenerate.

The variety was grown earlier, very large tubers, tasty, but there are cons: there are voids inside the tuber; if the summer is wet - potatoes are poorly stored - it rots from the inside.

Sante is very tasty, as my relative says, you can smear bread instead of butter. And boiled, but if you cook in a "uniform", it is not very boiled. Its disadvantage, in my opinion, is a high density, therefore it is a little tidy to clean.

Sante - worse than Vineta (I think because of the size of the planting tubers - planted tubers 55 x 45 mm in size), there were few 6-8 tubers on the bush, but everything was pretty large, although everyone writes that it’s tasty in a frying, it turned out to be tasteless, tasteless, for fun I’ll put it on the next year a little bit, if the taste is confirmed - plant I won’t.

Last summer, I, as an early variety, cultivated Sante. It turned out that he is better than other varieties of potatoes, tolerates heat, and the yield from the bush was not bad. Tubers are knotted before flowering, there are practically no trifles. It is suitable for growing for sale. In the summer, “Sante” pleased me, and in the fall, when compared by taste, the leaders, as always, were “Agria”.. A source: http://indasad.ru/forum/62-ogorod/296-molodoj-kartofel

Sante is a Dutch harvested potato variety. Caring for it differs little from the standard. Pay more attention to disease prevention. The crop will be without watering and top dressing, but with these agricultural practices, productivity will increase by 1.5–2 times. Tubers will grow larger, there will be more.
