With the onset of spring, we get the idea that it would be nice to build a birdhouse on the cottage. Like, so everyone does, it's like a tradition. However, by and large, birdhouses are needed and useful equally for birds and for humans. If the site is inhabited by a feathered family, this will be the best guarantee that during the whole season we will not be bitten by midges, mosquitoes or anything like that.

And our garden will be reliably protected from various insect pests. There are already two birdhouses on my site, and both have permanent guests who arrive every spring. So I advise you to make a birdhouse, especially since it's quite simple.

In the understanding of many people a birdhouse is a house for starlings. However, this is not quite true. Such a dwelling can comfortably accommodate many birds, such as moscow, flytrap, tit, nuthatch, etc. The main difference - in the size of a tap hole - is the hole through which the bird penetrates inside. Therefore, the story will be about building a classic type of birdhouse, specifically for starlings.

Material for the birdhouse and tips for building

You need to know that the building material is necessarily a tree. Any, except coniferous species. It is necessary to know that birds will not live in a place where there are sharp smells. When processing blanks, future internal walls should not be cleaned, they must be rough. Otherwise, claws of birds will slide along the walls and the "tenant" can not get out.

It is necessary to take into account some constructive details:

  • that the house was not "cold", the board should be taken in the thickness of 2 cm;
  • the diameter of the tap must be made within 5 cm;
  • the size of the bottom of the house - 15 x 15 cm;
  • height - about 30 cm;
  • between the tap and bottom - 25 cm.

Now it is necessary to make the parts for the birdhouse: roof, bottom, 2 side walls, front and rear walls. Assembly of the house itself is best done with the help of self-tapping screws. Unlike nails, they can tighten "pull" parts to each other, and over time, such fastening will not be weakened. And the last thing is to attach a shelf( a perch) so that the bird can get into the house from it.

After making the bird's "dwelling" from the outside, it is necessary to process the board. There are special means to protect the tree from insects, putrefaction and drying out. Then such a birdhouse will serve for many years. The roof is better to do a removable one - this will allow you to clean inside the house during the off-season and to additionally process the wood.

If there is a desire to somehow decorate the dwelling for birds, then the birdhouse can be painted with colors. However, two things need to be taken into account. First, as indicated, the paint should not smell of acetone or anything else. Birds do not like sharp smells. Secondly, the external design of the birdhouse should mask it well in the place of installation, otherwise it will become the object of close attention of predators, including other birds.

 If the plot has fruit trees, then it is better to install a birdhouse on them. Birds will constantly eat all the pests around their house. In this case, the perch is not made, as the birds get inside straight from the tree branch.
