Shell material( shell rock) is a stone of natural origin. It is formed as a result of natural pressing of shells of mollusks, their remains together with limestone and sand. Obtained by sawing blocks from the rock mass. It is used mainly for the erection of houses, outbuildings, garages, fences. Has a porous structure, which determines its high thermal and sound insulation.

It is produced in Dagestan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan. But, the most significant of its deposits are explored in the Crimea. Therefore, Crimean shell rock is the most common in construction.

Coquina stamps and their use

There are blocks of shells of several brands: M15, M25, M35.They differ in density, so they are used in construction for different purposes. For example, the least resistant brand M15, used to build walls that will not carry a heavy load, are most often used to create partitions, fences.

Shell rock M25 is used for the erection of one- and two-story buildings. The M35 analogue is suitable for multi-storey buildings. Its specific strength is quite high, therefore it is additionally used for the erection of foundations, basement and basement floors. In these photos, you can see the difference between different brands of material: the main difference between products is their structure( large / smaller porosity).

Technical specifications of shells

The standard dimensions of the blocks are 390х190х190 mm with an allowable deviation of about 10 mm. Weight of blocks: from 9 up to 25 kg.

General characteristics for different types of construction materials are almost identical:

  • frost resistance: 25-30 cycles;
  • thermal conductivity: from 0.30 to 0.80 W / m · K;
  • porosity: 30-60%;
  • water absorption: about 17%;
  • density: 2100 kg / m3.

Due to the above parameters limestone shell is considered warmer than the slag block or foam concrete. Shell rock has no artificial analogues, therefore it is a unique natural material for the construction of houses and households.buildings.

Advantages of

The natural composition of shell rock makes it indispensable for the construction of high-quality houses and cottages. It is applicable for erection of buildings, and for wall cladding, excellent for attic / attic floors. A wide range of uses and excellent performance properties are not the only advantages of the material. Other advantages include:

  • Ease of cutting, processing( for example, for creating arched openings).
  • Ability to use leftovers to create a landscape design( fountains, dry streams).
  • High vapor permeability( excludes formation of mold and fungus in the house).
  • Good heat preservation, eliminating the need for additional insulation.
  • The optimum price in comparison with similar building materials.

When viewing a video about processing or grinding coquina, you can make sure of its ease of use. It is also worth remembering the creation of a healthy atmosphere in the house when building from shell rock, in the elements( shellfish, shells) which contains a certain percentage of iodine and salt.

Disadvantages of

It is also worth considering the drawbacks of the material, namely:

  • , the need to protect against excessive moisture;
  • neat transportation and storage;

Despite the presence of some disadvantages, the feedback of builders who built houses from shell rock is mostly positive. If you follow the basic requirements when using raw materials, it will not be difficult to build a reliable, warm house with a unique atmosphere.
