In our time, when building houses and country cottages, more and more attention is paid to economy, environmental friendliness and speed of erection of buildings. Excellent material and one of the leaders in terms of performance and installation time are SIP panels or SIP( Structural Insulated Panel) - structural heat-insulated panel( KTI).

Thanks to its modern production technology and competent combination of several building materials, they allow to create a solid construction for the creation of walls and ceilings with high thermal insulation values.

What is a CIP panel?

The material is a structurally isolated panel in the form of a briquette with the ability to cut out of it a detail of any shape. The composition of the panel consists of two main components. This is an external protection made of OSB and an internal filler in the form of expanded polystyrene. In turn, the OSB coating is made of wood shavings, pressed under high pressure, which perfectly protects the insulation inside the CIP panel. Expanded polystyrene, used in the construction of the building structure, has increased rigidity, which allows the execution of panels with high strength.

Two sheets of OSB and a sheet of expanded polystyrene are joined together by the gluing method in the factory. It is the production at the plants that makes it possible to create optimal conditions for bonding. High pressure, during gluing ensures monolithic panel and long life without delamination. At the factory, it is possible to perform standard type plates and special slabs of individual shape for each project.

Regarding the thickness of the self-supporting panel and the thickness of the OSB protective sheet, they can vary depending on the needs of the application site. Standard thickness of the panel varies from 60 to 224 millimeters, depending on the thermal insulation and strength needs of the erected wall or overlap. Usually SIP panels with the widest width are used for external walls and ceilings, where they will provide the maximum values of thermal insulation and strength.

Panel mounting

All panels manufactured at the factory immediately have a mounting process with completed mounting grooves along the edges.

The panels are fastened together by the method of using a bar with fixing screws, which ensures a reliable and durable fastening.

All the seams between the panels will have less thermal insulation properties, so foam is used to reduce the thermal conductivity. Foam perfectly fills all the cracks, between CIPs guaranteeing eliminating, cold seam.

Properties of self-supporting panels

Thanks to the use of expanded polystyrene in the structure, the panel has very low heat conductivity values, which allows the construction of thermos rooms. This property of SIP panels has been successfully applied in the USA and Canada for about 60 years, making it possible to manufacture rooms isolated from outside temperature. Full insulation will significantly reduce the cost of heating or air conditioning of the premises, making it more economical.

For the first time, when faced with technology, it seems that this panel is of low strength, because separately each of the components of the SIP has a small strength in comparison with brick or concrete. But in fact, the formed and pressed SIP has high technical characteristics, allowing to fully meet the needs of any residential building. In multiple-use experiments, the panel showed no deformation and failure, with a transverse load of 2 tons and a longitudinal load of up to 10 tons. Especially important are the longitudinal strength parameters, which allow the panel to be used as bearing walls for building buildings in several floors.

Technical characteristics of SIP panels

  • thermal conductivity of material 0,039 W /( m * K);
  • self-burning time is not more than 4 seconds;
  • is odorless, does not contain pollutants;
  • operating temperature range from -180 to +80 ° C;
  • water absorption at full immersion in water no more than 3% of the mass per hour.

Advantages and disadvantages of

Among the advantages of SIP, the following high performance properties should be noted:

  • Sound insulation comparable to brickwork two meters thick;
  • The houses built from CIP panels have a third degree of fire resistance( the duration of fire suppression is 1 hour).The panels themselves are treated with flame retardant, which gives the material a self-extinguishing property;
  • Possess the highest environmental safety requirements;
  • Do not have competitors among construction materials for insulation performance.

Among the shortcomings can be identified the following:

  • Higher combustibility than that of brick houses;
  • Less load-bearing capacity than concrete frameworks;
