Gipsovolokno and gypsum cardboard - what's the difference? Let's consider all characteristics

Such products are quite often used in construction and repair - for leveling surfaces, changing their configuration( relief), the device of partitions. It does not make sense to enumerate everything. The presence of the word "gypsum" in their names indicates that these materials are almost identical and are nothing more than analogs.

This often introduces some confusion, and it is difficult for a person unsophisticated in special terminology to choose the best option for a particular situation.

What are these types of products?

Drywall( GKL) is a sheet based on pure gypsum( pressed), glued on both sides with thin cardboard. Hence the name.

Gypsum fiber( GVL) - the basis is the same, but there is a difference."Core" consists of gypsum, in which small paper fractions( cellulosic fibers) are added. Therefore, GWL is a material with additional reinforcement( reinforcement). And there is no "shell" made of cardboard.

Here is the difference in production technology and caused differences in some properties of materials and determined the specifics of their application.

Product features

drywall

GKL

  • Drywall is characterized by insufficient mechanical strength( even brittleness), so it requires a rigid crate from the profile. Before sticking to a solid substrate, it must be perfectly aligned, since even with slight mechanical stress the sheet easily breaks.
  • GKL is rather pliable, if it is moistened with water. It is this feature that is used in cases where it is necessary to mount a figurative structure, for example, an arched type. Or round the corner of the room.
  • Fixing of sheets is performed either on the glue, or self-tapping screws. But the nail to stay in the GKL will not be - only pierce it.
  • The cutting of complexities does not represent - a sharp blade is often quite enough.
Note! It is believed that the GKL can be attached to any basis. This is not entirely true, and clarification is required - only on vertically oriented. Therefore, for the arrangement of multi-level ceilings, it is undesirable to use them.

GW

GVL

  • Gypsum fiber sheets are stronger, more rigid GKL.
  • The density( and therefore the weight of the GWL) is also higher. Hence, a greater resistance to thermal attack than drywall.
  • Reinforcing fibers reduce the flexibility, compliance of the material. This complicates its cutting, and for the manufacture of arches, it definitely does not fit.
  • The stability before minus temperatures is higher than for GCR, approximately 3.5 times.
  • Some "viscosity" of the structure leads to the fact that the nail, clogged in a sheet, is held in it no worse than in the wood.
  • Gypsum fiber is not as intense as GCR, it absorbs moisture. Therefore, these sheets can be made to finish the premises, such as toilet and bathroom. But we must not forget that, nevertheless, there is a definite limit of stability in gavage before liquids.
  • The noise insulation index exceeds the similar characteristic of drywall by a factor of 1.5.

Perhaps, this is the fundamental difference between gypsum fiber and plasterboard. All their other parameters are almost identical - the temperature range of operation, hygiene and so on.

Conclusion - despite the seeming "uniformity" of materials, where the sheet-finished surface will experience an increased load, including dynamic( for example, the floor), preference should be given to GVL.And to create structures with complex geometry, you should choose drywall.

Note! Each product is produced in various "modifications", which have differences in certain characteristics. Before you buy a product based on gypsum, all the features of a particular sample need to be specified in addition.

Price

Sheets of both, and other material are available in various sizes, thicknesses, varieties. Therefore, if we summarize all the data, it turns out that on average, GVL is approximately 1.8-2.2 times more expensive than similar GCR.Perhaps, in part, this explains why the latter found a wider application in everyday life.
