How to split the PEN conductor according to the PUE?

In our last article about the types of grounding, the power supply systems and their advantages were described. Also described was the modern supply system TN-C-S, in which the neutral PEN is divided into two separate conductors: protective PE and power zero N. In the wiring, the two wires are separate, performing a different function. PE wire does not participate in the transit of electricity to the consumer, but performs the protection function by connecting the device case to zero potential and protecting the user from possible electricity damage. In this article, we would like to tell you where the separation of the PEN conductor into PE and N according to the PUE should be performed.

Detached house or cottage

Owners of private houses in this plan are more fortunate, without much expense the owner of the cottage can make a grounding at home, as we told in our article. And carry out a modern system of safe electricity in your home.

No difference in three-phase( four-core) input or single-phase( two cores), PEN came to you, it can be determined by an indicator screwdriver with a phase indicator. Further in the input board, the neutral conductor is connected to the distribution terminal. From it go to the zero bus and a separate jumper ground terminal, and also connect the wire from the external ground loop to it. The location of the PEN separation of the conductor is shown in the figure:

Split

To know how to properly separate the conductor, we present a little the rules of the PUE of chapter 1.7( earthing and protective measures of safety) and 7.1( safety precautions):

  1. The separation of the PEN conductor is made before the input switching deviceIt is put directly on the PE and N separation bus, from which they go to separate terminals).In other words, the combined conductor needs to be divided up to the counter, and not after, sinceThe introductory machine according to the rules is placed in front of the electricity meter.
  2. The cross-section of the PE wire must be the same as that of the N.
  3. It is forbidden to combine the protective and neutral wires further in the circuit, beyond the splitting point.
  4. Do not use a common bus to disconnect N and PE conductors. It is necessary as shown in the photo: Terminal shields
  5. It is recommended to re-ground the PEN conductor on the input. Re-grounding scheme
  6. Do not use switches in the PEN and PE conductors.

Apartment

Owners of apartments are unlucky in this regard, as the organization of the TN-C-S system. In the specifics of the supply of multi-apartment buildings of the old fund, the connection of the PEN wire takes place alternately, from the floor to the floor. And in the event of an accident, such as the burnout of the zero wire in the floor plate, two phases come to the apartment. In this case, our system stops working and becomes dangerous.

Burned off a zero

For this reason, the separation of the PEN wire into PE and N is prohibited, since in the event of an accident the protective conductor will be energized.

To organize a secure electricity supply in the apartment, you need to install in the registration board:

  • voltage relay;
  • RCDs or differential automata;
  • to organize a full grounding device in the adjacent front garden or to lay an additional PE wire to the general house of the ASP;
  • make a system of equipotential bonding.

We draw your attention to the fact that it is forbidden to use water pipes, heating and gas pipes as protective earthing!

In the event that you still managed to make wiring in the apartment with a protective conductor, before reading our article, we strongly recommend that you do not connect it to the zero wire and the access panel, and leave it unconnected, until you arrive at your entrancedo reconstruction of electrical wiring and replace the old wiring from the TP according to the new standards.
So far you can use the additional protection devices described above.

In new apartments with TN-C-S grounding system, the separation of the combined conductor into a zero operating and zero protective conductor is carried out in the main switchboard. From it already go two wires separately to the floorboard and into the apartments, as shown in the diagram below:

That's all I wanted to tell you about where the separation of the PEN conductor into PE and N should be performed according to the rules of the PUE.Once again, we duplicate the answer, so you probably remember: in private houses the wire should be divided up to the counter before the input switching device, and in the apartments it is done in the Main Switchboard.
