Cartridge for the perforator - there is always a choice

Power tools come in different capacities, for the house usually they are purchased relatively small, because even during repair work there are no large-scale tasks. In particular, the perforators of the masters choose for themselves a light class, up to 3 kilograms, less often the preference is given to the middle class, from 3 to 5 kilograms of net weight, without additional adaptations.

These and others usually have a replaceable quick-action drill chuck for the Steck-Dreh-Sitzt perforator or, briefly, SDS, the translation is approximately the following: sit, turn, sit. In total there are 5 types of this nature, but only two are common. For medium and light class punchers, only simplified "plus" cartridges are used, and for heavy vehicles, the option SDS-max is used.

What's the difference? The first are designed for a small load, up to 5 J, while heavy punchers are capable of delivering an impact force of up to 30 J, and even higher. Appropriate for them and performance - light equipment punches holes not more than 25 millimeters, and heavy, using special attachments - up to 160 millimeters.

The device of the puncher cartridge and the principle of its operation

Let's look at how the cartridge of the perforator is arranged. Previously, the drill bit was fastened by closing the movable jaws by rotating the locking nut. Not always reliable and for a long time. Today, everything is simpler, SDS-plus uses a slightly different device for the drill chuck, the drills are fixed using two guide wedges and the same number of locking balls, in SDS-max cartridges, one guide wedge is larger. The tail of the baits should be appropriate, and there is a difference in the diameter of the bores for this or that type of cartridge.

To insert the nozzle into a modern cartridge, it is enough to install it into the socket and press it until the locking balls click, and to remove the drill, it is necessary to press the movable cover of the cartridge.

Many newcomers are curious why they have created cartridges of different types. Everything is simple. Proceeding from the fact that powerful perforators bite into concrete with great effort, due to drilling holes of decent diameters, reliable fixing of tools is necessary. The SDS-max option provides a deep drill landing, namely, by 90 millimeters, which in combination with a shank diameter of 18 millimeters gives the contact area of the rig with a cartridge of 212 millimeters square. With this clutch, you can safely drill holes even in a natural stone of high hardness.

Rotary hammer with replaceable cartridge, what can and can not be?

Virtually any electrical unit is universal enough if you use additional devices for it, for example, a dust collector for a perforator. Also widely used nozzles, which can be different, adapters and, finally, replaceable cartridges. Actually, the capabilities of drills and other tools used as a tooling are often not enough, because sometimes they do not require absolutely profiled work for a puncher.

For example, to screw the screw, you need a screwdriver, and in this case a perforator with a replaceable cartridge will be very helpful. However, no matter how many adapters you install or even try to change cartridges, it is almost impossible to achieve high accuracy with fine work. The fact is that the perforators are initially developed taking into account a small backlash, which is inevitable under the principle of action, on the basis of which these units operate: electro-pneumatic or electromagnetic.

However, by installing a new cartridge, you can drill a thinner hole with a great deal of success. The only thing that is not recommended to do is to install SDS-max cartridges on light or medium-class punchers, the load will be different, and there is a risk of damaging the power tool.
