How to choose a quality chisel?
Wood processing is carried out by various tools, but their main element is a cutting blade that creates shavings or sawdust during work. Among the numerous variants of such tools, a significant amount of work can not be done without the use of chisels. In general, chisels are steel flat rods of different lengths, with cutting blades and liners, mounted on wooden handles.
To strengthen the place of the nozzle on the handles there is a special crimp metal ring. When choosing these tools for work, you need to carefully check their quality. First of all, the correspondence to the necessary sizes and forms is taken into account. Checking the cleanliness of the machining, hardness and correctness of the sharpened cutting edges of the blades. An important point is the convenient shape of the handles and quality crimping rings on them.
The requirements for safe operation include the absence of sharp edges and burrs on these rings, which may represent a real danger of injury when using chisels. Such an opportunity is all the more likely if the wrong chisel angle is allowed or if the working edge is generally blunted.
What does the chisel sharpening consist of?
Knives, planks of iron should always be well honed. In working order, they should easily cut the hair or shave it off the surface of the skin. As with other cutting tools, there are certain rules how to sharpen a chisel. Sharpening of very blunt and even damaged( chipped blade, etc.) edges begins with work on the emery wheel.
It uses an electric or manual drive, and it is important to properly maintain the angle of sharpening and the plane of the edge, not to allow its rounding and distortion. Not the last role in this is played by the state of the abrasive wheel, the plane of its working surfaces.
Also, using an electric machine for sharpening chisels, you need to monitor the state of the surface, the temperature of its heating, avoiding overheating and, as a result, loss of hardness and working qualities of the blade. After such a "rough" preparation of the chisel comes a series of manual sharpening and debugging.
Such work, as a rule, is carried out with the use of special industrial abrasive grinders and donkeys. The bars are made from various fine-grained sandstones, carborundums, and other abrasives.
For precision fine-tuning, sometimes a small oslka is enough, finer components( various variations of fine-grained slate, clay shales, etc.) are used, but more often after working on a bundle, techniques for working on the skin with a layer of special polishing paste of GOI type are applied.
Basic instructions for sharpening the chisel
Before starting work, the bar should be moistened with machine oil, water or a saturated aqueous solution of ordinary laundry soap. Such wetting should be repeated periodically using a special brush. During processing on the bar, the chisel is applied with the whole plane of the pointed chamfer to the bar, it is pressed with both hands and is pushed back and forth.
Because the accuracy of the grinding angle depends on the work of the tool, all kinds of holders are often used, with the possibility of accurately providing the required value. Such a device for sharpening chisels can be purchased in the trade network or manufactured independently. In its design there are screw clamps, guides and movement mechanism on the surface of the abrasive.
The ground chamfer forms a burr, bending in the opposite direction. The chisel is placed on the other side and pressed against the abrasive by the whole plane of this back side. The above described machining techniques are repeated, with alternating turning sides until the burr is eliminated. Finishing on the buttonhole completely removes the burrs.
After that, using the tightly stretched skin with the pasted polishing paste, the blade tip of the chisel can finally be adjusted. To control its quality, you can use a well-known technique with a magnifying glass and a mirror. If you are sharpening semicircular chisels, the techniques and principles of work remain almost the same. We must strictly follow the angle of the bevel and try to maintain it.
To correct the curvature on the bundle, you can use a suitable form of abrasive or a wooden bar, tightly wrapped with abrasive paper. Since the pioneer times, there is a way to fine-tune the blunted blade of a safety razor. The blade in the middle part is pressed with the finger to the inner surface of the usual glass and rotational movements are found in one direction, then the second side is also processed.
