Bitumen emulsion: production process
Bitumen emulsion( or bitumen mastic) is a homogeneous viscous liquid consisting of an aqueous emulsion of petroleum bitumen that has been modified with an artificial rubber, as well as various fillers, technological additives. The process of producing this material on an aqueous emulsion is more complex than making mastics on solvents.
That's why this mastic has also high performance characteristics. It can be used in poorly ventilated, enclosed spaces. All this is due to the fact that the composition does not contain any organic solvents, and there is absolutely no danger of a fire. And due to the natural evaporation of water from the material, the drying process occurs much faster.
Bitumen emulsion is produced in strict accordance with the main DIN standards( building parameters in Europe), as well as European legislation. It is according to these standards that the release of solvents into the atmosphere is prohibited during the manufacture and release of products.
In Russia, such a production was launched only a few years ago, but, nevertheless, there are already a number of products that have been trusted by consumers( for example, TechnoNICOL No. 31, 04).
Bitumen emulsion: scope and advantages
Bituminous emulsion is used for road works, waterproofing of structures that are buried in the ground, with its help surface treatment of asphalt, terraces, verandas, garage etc. is carried out. In addition, thanks to its innovative composition, it is possible to apply the mixture both indoors in the protection of bathrooms, waterproofing certain elements of structures from moisture.
In terms of advantages, we can distinguish the following:
- Water-based bituminous mastics have a lower viscosity and therefore penetrate the surface more qualitatively.
- Promotes better bonding( adhesion) of the substrate with a subsequent layer of waterproofing.
- Complies with the main environmental standards, therefore, emissions of organic compounds in the environment are reduced.
- Is harmless to the environment and human health.
- Reduces the risk of fire. By the way, there is an emulsion for the walls with a similar composition.
- The specific gravity of the bitumen emulsion averages 1.05 kg / dm3.
How to use
Before using the mastic, it is important to prepare the base( terrace, veranda, garage, swimming pool, balcony, cellar, etc.).To do this, the old coating is removed, the surface is cleaned of debris, cement milk, bituminous stains, all kinds of sharp elements. Align dents and cracks that are larger than 3mm.
Primer is then primed with an emulsion primer. Dilute it in a container according to the prescription given on the box until a creamy mass is obtained. Apply it with a brush or a fur roller. Drying time is about 1 hour. After that, immediately applied bitumen emulsion road in two layers. The drying time of each layer is about 5 hours.
Bitumen emulsion consumption depends on the type of surface to be treated. On each package the average expense is prescribed. After the layers are finally dried, further work can be done on the installation of the screed, as well as further tiling the surface.
The main purpose of when using emulsion for both urban roads and garden paths of is to provide the necessary parameters for frost resistance, wear resistance and appearance of plastic-elastic properties. Plus, it increases the adhesion for subsequent coating. The work process is similar. The mixture is applied to a clean, leveled base in an approximate flow rate of about 0.20-0.30 l / m2.
After the water has evaporated from the solution( the layer will dry), a thin bituminous film is formed. It does not allow to move to the next coating - asphalt or concrete. Thus, a qualitative combination of coatings is carried out.
For the waterproofing of the and other moisture-proof structures, the principle of application is the same( described on the packaging). The surface is cleaned of old paint and other coatings. Wait until completely dry and then apply the composition. It creates a kind of film, through which water does not penetrate.
