Types of drying oil

Of all types, the most popular is natural, combined, oxol. Composite and alkyd compositions can also be used. We will describe each of them in more detail.

  • Natural linseed oil consists of real vegetable oil, looks like a thick, opaque liquid( black-brown color). It is made in accordance with GOST 7931-76.Used for impregnating wooden substrates, as well as diluting thickened paints. Professional workers recommend using it only indoors. Outside - it is completely impractical.
  • Oxide is made from oil and solvent in accordance with GOST 190-78.And the oil content is about 55%, the remaining 45% - solvent( white spirit and desiccant). The mixture has a slightly unpleasant odor, which can persist even after the layer has dried. Oxol is much cheaper than natural varnish. Used for plastered wooden substrates inside buildings. Outside it can also be used, but lacquer, paint or enamel must always be applied.
  • The combined , in fact, is no different from the previous composition, only the ratio of solvent and oil. In this mixture, the oil content is about 70% and 30% of white spirit. The scope of use is the same as that of oxylic( for wooden and plastered walls).
  • Composite consists of synthetic substitutes, not natural oils. Most often it contains refined products. This linseed oil is produced in accordance with the specifications defined by GOST for it. Unlike natural, these compounds have a virtually colorless appearance and dry out longer. They are used only for outdoor works, since they have some toxicity.
  • Alkyd is manufactured from alkyd resin with the addition of modified oils and solvent. These compounds are much more economical to use than natural varnish, because they can easily be used for outdoor works, as well as for the preparation of paints.

Recommendations for choosing

Before buying a varnish, you should carefully inspect the contents of the can. First of all, pay attention to the color, it should be dark brown( for natural) and colorless( for compositional).Plus, study the composition indicated on the label, as well as compliance with GOST( available from oxal and natural linseed oil).

On the oxol and natural varnish there must also be a certificate of conformity, on the compositional - hygienic. And in general, with the last be very careful, because it has toxicity, it is important that it does not have a fuse( the remainder of the oils), otherwise it will never dry out.

Also it is necessary, that in structure there was no osprey( substance from oil refining). With this content of drying oil, too, it is unlikely to dry out. Well, the last thing that can be noted - take a look at the uniformity of the liquid. There should be no sediment, mechanical inclusions, and, of course, smell.

Drying oil: application of

As mentioned above, the main purpose of this mixture is surface treatment, and it is also used for the manufacture of paints. If we talk about the treatment of bases, then the drying oil for the tree is ideal. She is impregnated with both products and walls. However, for outdoor works it is better to use linseed oil only as a preparation of the surface for subsequent painting.

And it is recommended to use oxol or alkyd compounds( not natural ones, which are not practical at all).Due to the fact that the resistance to rain and the durability of the coating of natural mixture is minimal. It is better to apply it for the dilution of paints. If we talk about domestic works, then the natural drying oil is quite suitable, as it has an ecological composition and has no smell.

All types of drying oils are used in the manufacture of paints. For example, natural is used for dense paints, alkyd - for oil paints. Only the composite is not used because of its poor quality.
