Wooden skirting - an old-timer in the interior
Skirting is not only a special lath covering the connection of the wall and floor, but also a very important element of decor. Already passed those times when there was only one kind of this much needed finishing material. For today, as they say, there would be money, and the plinth can be picked up any: the traditional - wooden, and the new high-tech - from MDF or plastic.
The solid wood slats were probably the only ones available until the early 1990s. They had a well-known triangular shape and did not differ in special delights. The modern wooden plinth has become much more elegant, now it is a more straight profile with a rounded upper part and sizes vary within 10-12 cm.
All kinds of tinting give even the most ordinary wood the look of valuable species. An important condition for fastening such a skirting board is its mandatory coating with oil or varnish before the installation. The process of installation itself will be discussed below.
How to fix a skirting board to the floor? For the fastening of wood, two methods are used:
- fixation with screws, is carried out when fixing the skirting board with dimensions of 8-15 cm. The holes left after fixing the screws are closed with a special wax pencil, combined with the color of the wooden slats;
- fixation with zinc-coated finishing nails.
MDF and veneer plinth -
fastening features The veneered plinth is a plank made of pine or spruce wood, on which natural veneer of valuable wood is glued. This technology allows to exist a huge variety of various profiles. How to fix the floor skirting of this kind? To fix it, we use:
- mounting clips that come with this material. This fastening allows not to damage the surface, for this purpose special slots are provided at the base, allowing this finish to be worn on them and fixed immovably.
- special glue "liquid nails".
Skirting boards made of MDF , thanks to a dense and even base, have a fairly stable design. This type should be installed in rooms where smooth and straight elements are needed along the contour of the room, with a monochrome finish and strict shapes. How to attach the plinth to the floor? These bars are fixed according to a technology similar to the wooden version.
PVC - mask all the shortcomings of
The skirting boards of PVC are distinguished by a huge variety of shapes, colors and textures. If necessary, this finish is very easy to remove and change. The main advantage of this material is its flexibility, thanks to which these bars easily repeat all surface irregularities, thereby hiding them.
This finishing material is recommended with linoleum and laminate. Also in this class of skirting there is a special kind - PVC-planks with a cable channel. Their installation is especially convenient if you want to hide intra-house communications. How to fix the floor skirting from plastic? Such PVC pads are fastened in two ways:
- with screws and dowels;
- with locks, which allow to lay cables in the technological gap between the baseboard and the wall.
General rules for fixing the floor plinth
In order to implement the fixing of the floor plinth , you will need:
- itself the subject of discussion;
- liquid nails or self-tapping screws;
- hacksaw;
- screwdriver.
Before proceeding with the installation of a wooden skirting board( for plastic strips this condition is not critical), it is necessary to level the walls.
Begin fixing the skirting to the floor from the corner pieces. To do this, the edges are cut at an angle of 45˚ and docked in a corner. If there are minor mismatches, then they are undermined by coarse-grained sandpaper. But this is all true for wooden skirting boards. Plastic analogues have special corner elements, which allow you to join the strips without much hassle.
After fixing all the corner joints, the remaining skirting boards are cut and fitted between them. If fixing occurs on self-tapping screws, then they need to be screwed closer to joints joints, for a good connection of joints. The hats of self-tapping screws are subsequently masked with a special wax pencil.
If the installation is done on clips, then the fixing points are calculated from the step of 30-40 cm. At the same time, if the surface of the clip is observed to be uneven and there is no tight fit of the strip, you should move slightly and reduce the distance between the fasteners.
