How to choose a tile
Today a wide variety of tiles is on sale. Therefore, it is very difficult for an uninformed buyer to choose something suitable for himself. Another serious problem is the determination of the required number of tiles, i. E.buy as much material as necessary for work. Sometimes, for the work is not enough purchased tiles, and have to go again to the store. Sometimes they overpay and buy more than necessary. And overpayment turns out to be serious. At least for this reason, buying tiles is in large stores. After all, they often without any problems can take her leftovers back. In any case, it is better to buy the material more than necessary, because it is much more difficult to determine how much to purchase. Moreover, there is a possibility that the store will not be replenished with the goods you need, and your repair may remain incomplete for a long time.
But buying tiles with excess is also necessary with the mind. Beforehand, make sure to make the necessary measurements of the surface, which is planned to be tiled. The material should be taken with a margin, but no more than 5% more. If you came to the store and chose the right tile for you, then please ask the seller if the store has enough of it. In general, to choose the right material is better even before measurements, especially if you plan to use an expensive product. When you know the size of the desired tile, then take a piece of paper and sketch out the plan of your bath. This plan should be deployed, where each wall is depicted separately. In this case, so that there are no errors in the calculations it is important to comply with the scale. Do not calculate by square meters, but by the number of tiles. When the plan is ready, you can apply tile contours to the walls.
Unfortunately, rarely the floor and wall sizes are a multiple of the size of the tile. Therefore( most often for corners of a premise) the material should be cut. Note on the plan the places for which the tile will be cut, while choosing them in such a way that the cut tiles were least noticeable. If you correctly calculate the plan, then you thereby reduce the amount of cut material. When the plan is ready, you can calculate the required number of tiles.
Preparation of the room
When all necessary material is purchased, proceed to prepare the room. First of all, you need to take out furniture from it. It will greatly interfere. In addition, be sure to close the valves with hot and cold water. Also, with care, remove the plumbing, especially if you do not plan to change it.
In the room being prepared, the walls and floor can already be faced with old tiles. This tile needs to be removed. For this purpose, the perforator installed in the percussion mode is most suitable. But before starting work with this tool, it is desirable to remove the bottom tile by hand, for example, using a chisel. Do not worry about the fact that some old tiles will fall off together with pieces of plaster and glue. In any case, this layer must be deleted.
Methods of laying tiles
Before you can lay out the tiles, you must take into account the ways of laying it, which there are several.
The easiest way is straight laying, which is most suitable for beginners.
In order to get a fairly effective final surface in a square room it is better to use a diagonal styling. This method helps to mask the oblique surfaces, but it requires experience.
A classic variant of laying tiles of two colors is laying in the form of a chess pattern.
Another way of laying is laying with offset. In this case, each successive row of ceramic material is placed with some displacement relative to the tile in the previous row. This option is well suited for use in rectangular spaces.
The material can be laid out as a mosaic of tiles in various sizes and colors. This is a rather complicated option, requiring experience. At the stage of drawing up the plan, it is necessary to mark on it places where inserts, borders and other decorative details will be located. When drawing up a plan, one should strive to ensure that the doorways and corners have as few narrow stripes as possible.
Tools and materials
For work we need glue for ceramic tiles. It is a dry mixture, diluted with water. Just need the capacity in which you will prepare this glue. For mixing, you will need a drill. Even in the process of work, a building level and a spatula with a denticle are needed. To remove excess glue, you will need a sponge. For cutting tiles - a Bulgarian or a tile cutter. The edges of the cut tiles will have to be grinded. To do this, you will need a corundum bar. In addition, in the process of work you will need to form joints between the tiles. For this purpose we need plastic crosses. At the end of the repair, grouting is required.
Waterproofing
In the process of laying tiles, an element such as a waterproofing is important. Some who wonder if tiles under the bathroom are necessary, underestimate it and simply ignore it. But knowledgeable people recommend waterproofing in any room where water supply and running water are installed. After such work, you will protect against the flow of water, not only yourself, but also your neighbors.
Before installing the tiles, a special waterproofing coating must be applied to the floor. As a waterproofing, you can use protective materials that are applied with glue. Before applying a waterproofing layer, it is necessary to treat the surface with a primer. It will ensure good adhesion of the protective layer to the floor. Then you need to apply the waterproofing layer. There are several ways to do this. One of them is the lubricating method of application. It is great if you need to save moisture from the floor. For this, the dry mix of material is diluted with water until a uniform mass is obtained. When the mixture is ready, then using a special roller, apply it to the floor on even areas. In difficult-to-reach areas, the mixture should be applied with a spatula. In the joints it is best to lay a waterproofing tape. Waterproofing should also be applied to walls taking into account the size of the planned floor. The protective layer needs to be applied in several stages. After applying the next layer before applying the next, you need to wait five to six hours. After applying the last layer, leave the finished floor for a day. Understanding the importance of floor waterproofing should not cause the question of whether the tile is placed under the bathroom.
There is also a painting method for applying waterproofing. This is an easier and more convenient way, but less durable( up to five years). In this case, a special waterproofing emulsion applied to the working surface with a roller is used.
Floor leveling
For laying the material on the floor, a quality screed is required, which will ensure that the tiles under the bathroom lie flat. In addition, further work is much easier to do when the surface is laid fairly flat. It is desirable to perform leveling of the floor with the help of building special mixtures. To ensure that moisture does not fall into hard-to-reach places, and that there it does not accumulate, the floor is best done under a slight slope. To do this, you can make a horizontal level on the perimeter of the walls, and then insert the guide rails.
When the screed is ready, it is necessary to fill the floor with a special leveling compound, which can be bought at any construction store. There are some nuances when laying tiles on a wooden floor. The fact is that such a floor without screed and waterproofing will not last very long, because it will get moisture. The fill should be started from the far end of the room and gradually move towards the door. The solution must be distributed evenly. After the work is done, leave the floor for three days so that it can dry completely. Before putting the tiles under the bathroom, it is recommended to primer the working surface, so that the grip will improve.
Tile laying under the tub
- Ceramic tiles are usually used for laying the floor. Before you glue the tile, it is advisable to simply lay it down and see how it will lie. Cut the tile in any case. Such cut material is best distributed as close as possible to the edge. To lay the tile exactly was easier, it is recommended during the fitting of the tile, using a conventional marker or chalk to draw on the floor markings.
- Begin laying from the furthest corner. For work, previously diluted special glue is used. This adhesive should not be applied to the tile, but to the floor with a notched trowel.
- Then the material is pressed tightly against the surface and is taped on all edges with a hammer. This should strengthen its adhesion to the floor. Between the tiles need to lay special crosses that form the seams. In addition, you will need wedges, with which you can align the seams between the tiles. During operation, be sure to check the smoothness of the installation using the building level.
- During work, there will always be remnants of glue that need to be removed from the surface as quickly as possible until it is dry. Otherwise, you can complicate your work.
- When the basic whole tiles have been laid, you can cut the required amount of material with a tile cutter or with a hacksaw for metal. We put the cut tiles on the previously planned places. When the material is already densely laid on the surface, it is necessary to seal the seams using a sealing compound.
- After the tiles have been completely laid, it is necessary to wait for about three days until the glue and the grout completely dry. When everything is dry, you need to wash the floor with a damp sponge, and then remove the excess sealant.
