Historical excursion
The issue of decorating the dwelling appeared immediately after the person moved from the cave to the houses. Initially, for these purposes, various objects and drawings were used, but with the emergence of a division by social status, the richer community representatives began to invent various delights. One of the first achievements of the design industry was molding.
It was used not only to decorate rich mansions, but also in temples and other religious buildings. In the Middle Ages molding turned into a real art, which up to the ideal brought the artists of the Renaissance.
Since then, this element of the interior is considered an attribute of luxury and emphasizes the social position of the owner of the house. It is worth noting that alabaster, cement or clay was originally used as a starting material, but with the advent of gypsum, they lost relevance, since the material is much more practical.
Advantages and disadvantages of plaster molding
Gypsum is a material of mineral origin, therefore, in its pure form it is safe for humans, it does not emit toxic fumes and is environmentally friendly. In addition:
- has a low cost,
- allows you to create products of any shape,
- easily takes a different color,
- is quite durable.
Nevertheless, gypsum has its drawbacks:
- crumbles without special treatment,
- is not resistant to mechanical damage,
- loses its shape upon contact with water.
In practice, all these disadvantages are easily eliminated. Products made of gypsum have a special metal crate, on which the main mass is applied, then it is covered with a fine mesh, which fixes the pattern. After hardening, the part is treated with special waterproofing primers, eliminating crumbling, and the metal frame increases the strength.
Naturally, this increases the cost of production and as a result, the price of the product itself. Before buying, you need to clarify these nuances from the seller, since not all manufacturers comply with technological requirements, while deliberately overstating the cost.
Gypsum products
Gypsum stucco is represented by the following varieties:
- moldings( decorative element that covers the angle between the ceiling and the wall),
- cornices( fastened above the windows and hide the usual cable for curtains and curtains),
- sockets( various patterns or patterns aroundcentral chandelier),
- columns( decorative imitation of these columns),
- capitals( top of the column),
- arches( semicircular monolithic columns decorated with patterns or patterns),
- fireplaces( due to ready-made pores),
- mirrors( patterns or patterns around the usual mirror that create the original frame),
- bas-reliefs( sculptural compositions used for wall decoration),
- figures( individual figures of people or animals).
Stucco from gypsum, the photo of which is presented in the article, more clearly demonstrates how these or other products look in the interior.
Stucco from gypsum in interior
Given such a rich variety of products from gypsum, they are used almost everywhere. In order to consider the possible variants in the most detailed way, we classify all products into three groups:
- stucco for ceiling,
- stucco for walls,
- art deco.
Ceiling stucco is represented by moldings and rosettes. They are installed in all rooms except the bathroom, as even with good waterproofing, high humidity will soften the material and affect its appearance.
Moldings differ in width and shape. The larger the room, the wider the molding, the same formula applies to rooms with high ceilings( more than 3.2 m).Sometimes plaster moldings are made without patterns, there is no sense in buying such a product, since the entire value of the stucco is in the presence of the picture. His choice is purely a matter of taste. It should be taken into account only that vertical lines visually increase the ceiling, while horizontal lines make it lower.
Another nuance is associated with animal images( for example, the head of a lion). This option is relevant for the kitchen, hall or guest. In the bedroom or a child's drawing will cause some discomfort.
The size of the sockets depends on the ceiling area and the length of the chandelier base. There are no specific standards, but in practice, experts recommend choosing a rosette whose radius is equal to or greater than the radius of the lighting device.
Stucco molding on the walls is represented by columns, capitals and bas-reliefs. Columns are relevant in combination with frescoes or mosaics. This is quite a specific attribute and in order to harmoniously fit it into the interior, you need to carefully plan the design of the entire room.
The most common way is to create a terrace. On one of the walls a beautiful landscape is drawn, then columns and capitals are installed. As a result, it turns out that one of the walls is transparent and leads directly to the street.
Tip: given the specifics and history of the columns, the landscape must be of Greek or Italian motif.
Bas-reliefs are much more functional. With their help decorate the bottom third or half of the wall. They represent either battle scenes, or images of wildlife, or intricate patterns.
Another variant is a separate picture. This bas-relief is located on the center of the wall and serves as the main element of the whole composition. Therefore, interior items should emphasize the uniqueness of the stucco and attract attention to it( the bas-relief is not only executed great, but also really spectacular, the rest of the design is as tight and laconic as possible).
The latest trends show that the gallery option of decorating rooms is very popular today. It is relevant for corridors and halls. It is also possible to use bas-reliefs in this case, except that the size will be much smaller( 15x10 cm, 20x20 cm, 10x10 cm).
Art Deco
The popularity of gypsum is determined by the fact that the material is successfully used not only to create a standard stucco molding, but also for the production of other decorative elements. Initially, the technology was used only for fireplace gates. It should be noted that although the gypsum does not burn, nevertheless it does not tolerate high temperatures, that's why it is used to decorate decorative fireplaces.
The stucco molding is then applied to create frames. The stucco is decorated with mirrors or canvases of paintings. In nature, the gypsum can be:
- gray,
- white,
- yellowish,
- with a pink tinge.
But, modern technologies allow to receive frames of any colors, which makes the product truly original and unique. The bigger the mirror, the wider the frame.
Another interesting use of stucco - the design of doorways. In this case, it is not necessary to make a classic arch. Gypsum is great for creating an openwork decorated doorway, which looks no less impressive than the most expensive and beautiful door. From a practical point of view, the doors from the corridor to the common rooms are not necessarily the subject of the interior. Exception:
- bedroom,
- nursery,
- cabinet.
Gypsum figures successfully replace marble statues. They take any shape and size. They are used, both as separate elements, and as whole compositions. Only, they look only in rooms with a ceiling height of at least 3 meters and an area of more than 50 square meters.m.
