Behavior of drying oil and brief characteristics of

Drying oils are film-forming liquid substances based on vegetable oils with the addition of solvents and alkyd resins. Siccatives, which are part of drying oil, accelerate the drying process. Olipha, the quality certificate of which confirms compliance with technology in its production, is used for protective impregnation of metal or wood surfaces, which will subsequently be painted with oil paint, and also acts as a binding element in the production of oil paints or their dilution.

After application of the composition, a film appears on the surface, which after drying hardens and forms a protective layer. The main indicators of the quality of drying oil are its viscosity and drying speed. The higher the viscosity, the more difficult it is to distribute the composition evenly over the surface.

varieties of drying oil

Production of drying oil is characterized by the use of drying oils: linseed, hemp, walnut, poppy. The main component is linseed oil, the rest of the oils are added, as a rule, to make it cheaper.

There are three types of drying oil: oil, alkyd, composite or synthetic. Oily, in turn, also comes in three types: natural, combined and OXOL .

They differ among themselves in different percentage ratio of components, which affects their appearance, density, smell, but not on the protective properties. Natural oil drying oil consists of vegetable oils and does not contain any solvent, which makes it environmentally friendly, but also expensive. It is widely used in everyday life, because it practically has no odor and does not emit harmful substances to humans.

Alkyd linseed oil, the technical characteristics of which hardly differ from the oil, consists of alkyd resins, which are dissolved in modified oils and solvents. This substance is a part of oil or alkyd paints. It is very resistant to weathering and long service, so it is recommended to use it for outdoor work.

Synthetic linseed oil, the characteristics of which differ from other types, is based on artificial substitutes for natural products. Often these are refined products, so it is very toxic. Since even for several years it continues to release harmful substances, such drying oil is used for outdoor works or for painting well ventilated non-residential premises.

Technique of use of drying oil and precautions

It must be mixed thoroughly before using linseed oil. When thickened, it can be diluted with a solvent or nephras. It is applied to a dry and clean surface at an ambient temperature of at least +5 ° C.Since it can be applied both with a brush and a roller, and with a paint sprayer, the consumption of drying oil will depend on the method of application.

It is worth remembering that linseed oil is a fire and explosive substance because of the presence of solvents in its composition, therefore the rooms where the work is being done should be well ventilated. If it gets on the skin, it should be wiped off with a rag and then rinsed off with warm water. Store it in a tightly closed container, protecting it from moisture and direct sunlight, away from open flames and electrical appliances.
