Stretch ceilings - this is a very successful and practical solution to the issue of interior decoration of premises. Their installation is solved immediately and the problems of unaesthetic appearance of ceiling ceilings, and decorative decoration of the room. The only thing that will need to be foreseen is the closing of the gaps left on the perimeter of the room at the places where the profiles are installed and the canvas itself. This role is taken by special skirting boards.
In order to choose from a range of skylights for stretch ceilings, which are mentioned in the assortment of shops, the types of which differ significantly between each other both in terms of design, material and fastening technology, you first need to find out what profiles exist for the installation of fabrics. From this, basically, and will depend on what type of skirting to design the perimeter of the ceiling must be selected. Therefore, it is necessary to begin consideration with the types of profiles( baguette) used to fasten the belt itself.

Stretch ceiling construction, in centnersis simple - it consists of a PVC film, which is stretched and fixed in special metal or plastic profiles, mounted to the walls under the surface of the overhead ceiling. These stretches are designed for surfaces that have significant defects, which are difficult to eliminate by other methods. The film is able to give the surface a perfectly flat appearance, and the plinth, which is fixed around the perimeter of the canvas, often also emphasizes the style of the entire interior.
Most often, the profiles( baguette) are made in length of 2500 mm and cut if necessary on the required lengths during the installation, and also adjusted in the corners.
The baguette is firmly fixed to the wall( sometimes - and on the ceiling) by a pre-severed, perfectly flat horizontal line, and only after it is fully assembled, a sheet is attached to it by means of a spatula, which then under the action of heated air stretches into a smooth smooth surface.
The fastening of the web in the profiles is so reliable and strong that when stretched it is able to support a weight of up to 100 kg per square meter. In addition, very often the material from which it is made is waterproof. Due to its qualities, the stretch ceiling is able to withstand even a sufficiently large amount of water in emergency situations, for example, when flooding from the upper floors. That is why such ceilings are considered the best choice for bathrooms.
If a similar problem arises, it can easily be eliminated by the called master, which will bring the ceiling in order. In this case, the tensioning sheet will also act as a protective barrier, capable of protecting furniture and things in the room from damage by water.
Types of profiles for tension ceilings
Profiles are divided into several types in the place of attachment and functionality. They are wall, ceiling, special and separating.
- The wall profile is most often used for the installation of such a ceiling structure. It is fixed around the perimeter of the room on the walls - it even resembles a profile for suspended systems.
- Ceiling profile type is used when there is no possibility for some reasons to fix it on the walls.
- Special profiles are used for certain connections in complex structures.
- Separating moldings are designed for installation of stretch ceiling on large areas that exceed 60 square meters.m., since in this case the probability of its sagging is high.
canvas sheets to be attached to it. In addition, the ceiling can not be avoided without dividing profiles from different colors or textures of the canvas - there is the possibility of attaching two canvases on both sides. This type of baguette is used only in combination with the ceiling profile.
In addition, the so-called visible and invisible profiles are produced.
- A visible baguette is called because part of it remains visible when the canvas is already stretched, and here is a flexible plinth( insert) mounted on it.
- The invisible profile is completely hidden under the tensioned fabric, and if necessary, this design is framed by one of the decorative skirting boards that are glued to the wall.
Types of fastening of tensioned ceiling liners
There are three types of fastening the canvas in the profiles fixed on the wall: a beak, harpoon and wedge.
Each of the types has its pros and cons, which should be known when choosing a system.
Harp mount
Harpoon fastening of tensioning cloths is considered the most reliable of all, however, and the most expensive. Installation according to this technology is carried out as follows:
The film of the stretch ceiling itself is equipped around the perimeter with a rim made of strong plastic or metal, which has the form of a hook( harpoon). With the help of this hook, the web is fixed inside the profile. Using this technology, the wizard has the ability to reduce the size of the canvas during its installation, as its tension occurs during fastening in the baguette.
Fixing the film around the perimeter, it is heated, and as it cools, it stretches and turns into a flat surface.
ceiling. A special profile element is provided in the baguette, on which a skirting board specially designed for this system is installed. Its installation is the final stage of the installation process.
Fixed mount
This is the most affordable mounting system developed in Russia. Using it, you need to take a film for tension slightly larger than the ceiling area. In this design, the profiles are fixed to the wall under the ceiling, not more than one and a half centimeters below it. Next, the edges of the canvas are filled in a baguette, approximately in the same way as it would be hidden under a conventional ceiling foam board curb.
The mounting of the web in the profile can also be done with flexible inserts - this happens in cases when there are slight distortions in the corners of the plane.
The advantage of this fastening is that you can always easily reach the main ceiling, if necessary, conduct wiring or perform any repairs.
Wedge mounting
The wedge fastening system of the film can be called a successful combination of quality and price. To perform the installation of this structure, around the perimeter of the room, at a distance of about 30 mm from the ceiling, a special metal profile is installed on the walls.
Next, part of the cloth is filled in the profile, heated with warm air, and then with special wedges the edges of the film are clamped in a baguette. After the canvas is installed and finally cooled, it will be straightened to a perfectly flat surface.
Upon completion of installation, excess films are cut off or hidden under the skirting boards.
The wedge fastening system is somewhat more expensive than the bezel, but it will provide a higher reliability of fixing the film in the baguette. It can also be installed with slightly curved surfaces of walls.
Another advantage of the wedge system is its simple dismantling, if necessary, repair the floor surface or lay it over the tension ceiling of communication.
Types of skirting boards for stretch ceiling
Now that you know all kinds of profiles for installing a stretch ceiling, it will be easier to deal with a decorative skirting board that can be used to close gaps and to maintain a common style of the interior.
To create a stretch ceiling on the perimeter used skirting, made of different materials: polystyrene, polyurethane and PVC( PVC).
The main advantages and disadvantages of the materials are summarized in the table:
Skirting material | Typical mounting method | Positive qualities | Disadvantages |
---|---|---|---|
Styrofoam( foam) | Light weight, easy processing, reasonable price, | Lack of flexibility and increased fragility. Installation is only for special glue, as the material is afraid of the effects of solvents. | |
Polyurethane | The high flexibility of the material makes it possible to shape any shape, for example, a curved line of the ceiling or the joint of the fabric with the column. Material strength and ease of installation. | High price, higher weight than other skirting boards, therefore they require reliable fastening to the glue. If a fillet with a special groove is used to attach to the profile, this quality is not a disadvantage. | |
Polyvinyl chloride( PVC) | Lightweight and strong enough plastic. Drawing on the skirting board can simulate the invoices of different materials. | Lack of flexibility and color change over time( appearance of yellowness). |
Selection criteria for skirting boards for stretch ceiling
Skirting boards from the above materials can be mounted on the ceiling in any room, but some factors need to be taken into account:
- The purpose of the room where they will be installed. For example, the kitchen is best suited material that is easy to clean - it can be PVC or polyurethane. Unfortunately, vinyl profiles may turn yellow in the course of time, since in the kitchen there is always the largest amount of different vapors in comparison with other rooms.
- If the mounting of the skirting board is provided by the design of the installed mounting profile, then it is best to choose this option. As a rule, similar skirting boards are purchased together with the entire stretch ceiling system, are included in the kit, and most often they are made of flexible polyurethane.
- Polyurethane plinth( fillet) or otherwise it is called an insert, can be included in the order, even with the purchase of a stretch ceiling system.
- Sometimes, the plinth is selected in accordance with the design of the entire room. For example, for classical styles, decorative elements that mimic stucco molding are more appropriate, and for modern design, even rather narrow moldings are used.
- The skirting board, mounted on the adhesive, should be light and have a wide plane to which it will be glued to the wall. Its size should not be less than 30 ÷ 50 mm.
- If the skirting board is to be fixed to the profile, then the width of the part adjoining to the wall should be 20 ÷ 25 mm, with a profile height of about 15 mm.
- If there are columns in the room, or the ceiling has smooth curves, then you should choose the polyurethane flexible plinth.
This curb can have a special fastening to the profile or fixed to one of the polymer adhesives.
Tips for installing skirting boards
If you use a conventional decorative ceiling skirting, then in order for it to be well fixed on the wall, it is worth sticking to several recommendations:
- For perfect adhesion of the plinth with the wall, it needs to be well cleaned of dust.
- If you plan to decorate the walls with wallpaper, then it is better to glue them after the plinth has been installed, since it will better stick to the wall, rather than on paper.
- If the wall is painted with a water-based paint, then this process is better to be done before installing the skirting board, after drying the paint, and then the primer at the place of gluing.
- Buying a plinth, you need to consider the shape and style of the stretch ceiling.
- To glue and fit the skirting in the corners is not so easy, and if there is no experience in such work, it is better to entrust it to specialists.
- If you can not find a matching skirting board on the market, you can paint it. This work is carried out before it is mounted on the wall, otherwise it can be spoiled by accidental strokes, not only the wallpaper, but also the ceiling stretch liner.
- The skirting board can not be glued to the tensioned film in any case, therefore it is necessary to leave a gap of 3 ÷ 5 mm between them. On the wall of the curb, it is necessary to glue as reliably as possible, and most often for this purpose glue "liquid nails" is used.
- To cut the edges of the segments at the desired angle, a chair is used. If there is no such tool on the farm, then on the sheet of plywood or thick cardboard you can draw a template, according to which you should mark and cut off the edges of the plinth.
- Polyfoam and polyurethane curbs are easily cut with a sharp sharp knife, and it's better to adjust the plastic with a hacksaw or jig saw on previously made marks.
- The ends of skirting boards at the joints both at the corners and on straight sections are also greased with glue. If at installation in some places small gaps are formed they can be carefully covered with putty on an acrylic base.
The process of installing skirting boards
The installation of skirting boards requires precision and accuracy, only in this case, you can achieve the desired result.
For work it is necessary to prepare certain tools and materials that will be needed for installation:
- The required amount of the selected conventional plinth. It is better to buy it with a small margin, in case some part of the curb is spoiled.
- As mentioned above, instead of a conventional plinth, a polyurethane special insert, which is otherwise called a fillet or a razor, can be used. For this element, glue is not needed.
- Adhesive for mounting skirting. Best suited for this purpose glue such as "liquid nails" - it reliably fix the decorative element on the wall.
- A stool or pattern with measured angles that can be made by yourself.
- Stationery knife or jigsaw.
- Simple pencil.
- Ruler and ruler.
- Construction level.
- Paint stripping line.
The installation of a conventional skirting board is as follows:
- On the treated primer and the dried surface, markings must be made. The top line for installing skirting should be noted, and then repelled with a paint string, at a distance of 3 ÷ 5 mm from the tensioned ceiling.
- Further, the height of the skirting board is measured, and this distance is measured from the "starting" line already passed, and again beats off with a paint line - this will be the border along which the curb will be glued.
- If the walls have protrusions and there are external corners, then they also need to make markings. For this, a skirting board is attached to the wall, and a pencil mark is made on it on the side surface of the ledge. How this operation is performed is clearly visible in the photo.
- Bonding starts from the corner, but first you need to cut off the edges of the two joining segments at an angle of 45 degrees using a stool or a template.
Please note that on the sale often there are ready-made elements of internal and external corners. If you purchase them, then you will not need to measure and adjust the corner pieces of the curb - this will greatly facilitate and speed up the installation.
are very convenient. When corner elements are purchased, the curb sticker begins with them, and already between them they are assembled even areas, adjusting them to fit.
- The back of the skirting board and its edges are coated with glue. It should be applied only to the plane that will be joined to the wall, since it is impossible for the glue to reach the stretch ceiling.
- Next, the plinth is applied to the wall exactly along the marked line and tightly pressed. Thus, all other elements are mounted.
- Having waited for the glue to dry out, the gaps formed, at the places of docking of individual segments and the whole curb with the wall, it is necessary to carefully seal with putty. If the skirting board was painted, then in the putty it is also necessary to add paint of the same color, achieving the most appropriate shade.
When installing ceiling skirting boards the main thing is increased accuracy!
The installation of some types of skirting boards for a stretch ceiling is generally similar to a similar operation on a conventional one, but requires more care and accuracy. Nevertheless, the reader will certainly benefit from additional information on the fastening of the skirting board , which is set out in a separate publication of our portal.
Special plinth( fillet) is installed on a special ledge, provided for it in the profile on which the stretch ceiling is fixed. The fillet will need to be adjusted at the corners, cutting off a certain part, but it will not need glue for it, which means, if necessary, such an insert can be easily dismantled and then mounted on the meso. However, a similar insert for stretch ceilings will look perfect only if the surface of the walls is perfectly flat, otherwise it will only emphasize the flaws of the wall.
Knowing how to choose the appropriate skirting board and how to install a decorative curb for a stretch ceiling, it is quite possible to produce this process yourself, saving a certain amount.
