Roof insulation technology from the inside with your own hands

In some cases, roof insulation from the inside is a prerequisite for a comfortable microclimate in the house. These include the conversion of a non-residential attic into a mansard heated floor, as well as the replacement of a roofing covering, for example slate, with metal roofing or corrugated board, on which condensate and ice are easily formed in the event of temperature changes.

Roof insulation from the inside is carried out by any suitable thermal insulation material with one condition: they must provide waterproofing from the outside and vapor permeability from the inside. In other words, moisture from the condensate should not fall into the insulation layer, but at the same time, water vapor should be successfully removed from the interior of the attic or attic space.

Principles of roof insulation from inside

Fibrous warming materials such as mineral wool are suitable for this purpose. Unlike the insulation with foam, foam or polyurethane foam, they conduct well water vapor, and the direction of water vapor removal from the inside out is provided by the use of special membrane films.

Moisture removal is necessary not only to reduce humidity in the attic room. Fibrous insulation, wetting, lose some of their heat-insulating properties, crumple and deform. Therefore, when the roof is insulated from the inside, it is necessary to strictly observe the sequence of layers of the so-called "pie".The first layer on the inside is usually a decorative finish, in its quality can act any material: lining, gypsum board, plywood. Often it plays the role of filing, providing support for insulation. Further, a small ventilation gap of 2-3 cm is necessary, which ensures free air circulation. The next layer is a vapor-permeable membrane, with the direction of vapor extraction directed towards the heater. The heater must be of sufficient thickness for a good thermal insulation, at least 3 cm. For a residential attic floor, usually lay a layer of insulation from 10 cm. A vapor-permeable waterproofing film with windproof properties is placed on the heater, and the direction of steam removal must be directed from the insulation to the outside. Thus, the "heat insulation pie" protects against penetration of moisture into the insulation from the outside, but it copes well with the removal of water vapor from the room, which provides a comfortable moisture.

Layers of insulation layers

Roof Insulation Layers Laying on the Roof

Roof Insulation Technology from the Interior

  1. Roof insulation from the inside begins with the laying of the waterproofing layer. It is more convenient to do this at the roof covering stage with roofing materials. Lay it perpendicular to the rafter legs with a slight sag, a smooth side up. Strips of material are glued with mounting tape so as to exclude gaps and gaps. On the rafter legs after that, they fill the counter-racks of a 50-mm bar, and the crate is put on the crate from the plank board. On the board lay the roof covering. In the case of the insulation of the finished roof, the waterproofing is fastened under the rafters with a construction stapler, carefully gluing the attachment points with adhesive tape. Rafters must first be treated with antiseptic, because with this method of fixing their ventilation is disturbed and rotting becomes possible.

  2. Heat insulating mats of the chosen thickness are laid between the rafters of the gates or with the help of a rough binder. As a filing it is possible to use thin racks or a strong twine fixed on rafters with the help of nails. Mats should fill the entire space between the rafters, if necessary, cut them with a sharp knife. If several layers of mats are laid to give the layer of insulation the required thickness, the joints of the upper layer completely overlap the lower one. In this case, the lower layer of insulation is located with a shift or perpendicular.

  3. A vapor barrier film is placed on top of the heater. The film has a smooth surface on one side - it is placed in the side of the heater. The rough surface of the film easily absorbs moisture vapor, it should be directed towards the room. Correct laying of the vapor barrier is very important, because the capacity of the film is directed only to one side, and if placed on the contrary, condensation will form on the surface. The film is fastened with a stapler, gluing joints and fixing points.

  4. To fix the rails over the vapor barrier, the guide bars or profile are fixed to which the selected inner skin is subsequently mounted. If the attic is not planned, you can make a file from the edging board with a gap of 5-10 cm, the board is pretreated with an antiseptic.

Insulate the roof with a foam insulation

There are other ways to heat the roof, for example, a popular method of spraying a foam insulation, for example, polyurethane foam. For this, no special preparation is required, but the lathing of the roof is carried out at the same time solid and covered with an antiseptic. For the spraying of polyurethane foam, a special installation is necessary, supplying carbon dioxide under pressure, so it is usually impossible to perform it independently. To insulate the roof from inside with polyurethane foam, it is necessary to call specialists who will apply a layer of foam of the required thickness to the entire attic space. After expansion and drying, the foam forms a seamless and waterproof layer with low thermal conductivity. The drawbacks of this method include its vapor tightness, so when the roof is insulated from the inside with polyurethane foam in the residential attic floor, it is necessary to equip the forced hood to remove excess moisture.

Warming with foam insulation

Thermal insulation of the roof will save up to 25% of heat, and on metal roofs will eliminate the formation of ice and condensation, which will prolong their service life. If there are living rooms in the attic floor, the insulation layer should be selected in accordance with the heat engineering calculation.
