Power Tool Safety in Brief

When doing electrical work, you cannot do without using an electric tool - a grinder, a drill, a screwdriver, a wall chaser. Installation of electrical wiring dangerous not only because you are dealing with electric shock, but also because you use devices that can injure you if certain rules are not followed. In this article, we decided to briefly consider safety precautions when working with a power tool, so that every home craftsman can drill, drill, cut metal, etc. without incident.

So, the instructions for the safe use of electrical tools and devices are as follows:

  1. All power tools must comply with the requirements of State standards and TU in terms of compliance with electrical safety rules.
  2. The term “electric tool” refers to mechanisms powered by mains voltage or batteries.
  3. Before starting work, in accordance with the safety regulations, it is necessary to determine the class of the tool according to the passport data. The class, in turn, is determined by the method of protection against electric shock and is regulated by GOST. To know,
    what is the degree of IP protection you can in our article.
  4. It is also necessary to check the reliability of fastening of all parts and the availability of components. Inspect and make sure that the connecting cord (cable), electrical plug, protective cover, insulation is intact.
  5. The power plug must match standard wall outlets. It is strictly forbidden to make any changes to the power plug or mains socket.
  6. When inspecting, it is worth making sure that the switch is working and checking the power tool while idling (no load).
  7. It is forbidden to use devices that have visible defects and have not passed the tests or with an overdue inspection period.
  8. Safety instructions do not allow the use of a defective power tool.
  9. Stop work immediately if there is a circular fire on the collector, the smell of burning insulation appears, abnormal noise or vibration, fuzzy operation of the switch, leakage of grease from a working electric tool.
  10. In the event of a power failure or malfunction, all operations must be stopped and the tool must be immediately disconnected from the mains.
  11. Safety when working with a power tool strictly prohibits its use if damage to the power supply is visible. connection cable or plug, the operation of the switch does not correspond to the specified position, there are chips or cracks on the casing of the device.
  12. When using an electric tool, connecting wires and cables should be suspended whenever possible and not on the ground, floor or scaffold.
  13. It is worth making sure that the connecting wires or cables do not come into contact with wet or oily objects, surfaces.
  14. The power supply cable of the power tool must be protected against accidental mechanical damage. Make sure that the cable is not stretched, twisted, or chafed.
  15. It should be noted that foreign loads must not be placed on the supply cable or allowed to intersect with other cables or hoses of gas welding machines.
  16. In production or factories, an electrical tool must be taken into account, and undergo constant inspection and testing at a certain time. The terms for checking the power tool are established by GOST, technical conditions and standards for testing electrical equipment.
  17. After inspection and testing, the entire instrument is stamped with a number, the date of the next test and the signature of the person who carried out the inspection, as well as the name of the laboratory conducting the tests.
  18. To maintain the power tool in working order, carry out the necessary periodic tests, inspections and checks, the head of the enterprise or organization appoints a responsible employee. This employee must have a safety group of at least 3.
  19. All repair work should be carried out only by trained and authorized personnel.
  20. All workers who use hand-held power tools should remember that they must not be passed on, even for a short time, to other workers who are not authorized to work with it.
  21. Under no circumstances should the power tool be disassembled or in any way repaired during work.
  22. Until the rotating parts come to a complete stop, do not touch, remove shavings or sawdust, or grasp the power cable.
  23. Before installing the working part in the chuck or adjusting the power tool, it must be disconnected from the mains.
  24. At a construction site, according to safety precautions, you need to work from the scaffolding, the use of ladders is prohibited. If personnel work at height, solid scaffolding or permanent scaffolding is installed.
  25. When working outdoors, only extension cords are used that are approved for use in such conditions. They must be appropriately labeled.
  26. Unnatural body position should be avoided. There should always be a solid and reliable base under your feet.
  27. For safety reasons, anyone working with a power tool must disconnect it from the power supply when installation of a new nozzle or adjustment, when moving it from one workplace to another, during a break or at the end working day.
  28. In terms of personal safety, it is worth considering that long hair, in order to avoid winding it around the working parts, should be tucked under the headdress.
  29. Wearing too loose clothing should be avoided; it should be close-fitting but not restraining movement.
  30. Outdoor use non-slip shoes and gloves.
  31. To prevent dust, various chips, sawdust or shavings from getting into your eyes during construction, you must use goggles or a panoramic mask.
  32. When working with a large amount of dust, for safety reasons, you must use a respirator mask.
  33. The work piece to be machined must be firmly fixed.
  34. In high-noise environments, it is imperative to use headphones or earplugs.
  35. It should be borne in mind that the location of the power tool should be such that, if the cutting part breaks, it does not end up on the path of flying debris. This is especially true for the use of an angle grinder (grinder).
  36. It is strictly forbidden to work in a state of alcoholic or drug intoxication, in case of illness or feeling distracted by attention.
  37. When working with hand-held power tools on a construction site, a number of factors must be taken into account:
  • the possibility of electric shock;
  • the need to fence the workplace, in the case of work at height, due to the possibility of falling;
  • distraction of attention due to strong noise and vibration;
  • sufficiency of illumination of the place of work.

At the end of using the power tool, it should be cleaned of dust, dirt, and handed over to the responsible person for painting. To remind you of the general safety rules, we recommend that you keep this picture for yourself, print it in close-up and hang it in the workshop, garage or at work:
