What is a cooler?

Water cooler (from the English word cooler - "cooler") and dispenser (from the Latin word dispenso - “to distribute”) are often used in colloquial speech as synonyms. If we look at the technical component, we will see their significant difference. If a cooler heats and cools water, then a dispenser is a device for dispensing drinking water at room temperature, without heating or cooling it. For convenience, in our article we will use both terms in one meaning - cooler.

Typically, the volume of a bottle for a cooler is 12 or 19 liters. Purchased water (bottled) or tap water is taken. In the case of tap water, to be precise, the apparatus is called purifier. This is the same cooler, but it uses a water filtration system located at the bottom of the case. A traditional bottle is not used here - the device is connected directly to the water supply. The purifier also heats and cools the water.

Confused? Then briefly to consolidate:

cooler - heats / cools water, bottles are used;
dispenser - gives out water at room temperature, bottles are used;
purifier - heats / cools water, but takes it not from the bottle, but from the water supply.

Purifier

For a small family, a desktop dispenser is more often used, which is installed in the kitchen on countertop. In this case, it is necessary to take into account the distance from the device to the hanging cabinet, access to which should be easy and convenient. You can also consider other options for the surface on which the cooler will be installed: an additional table, a stand, wide window sill, shelf... Otherwise, a floor-standing dispenser is chosen, which, depending on the appearance, can perfectly “fit in” by style in any kitchen.

Types of coolers

Despite the ability to only heat / cool and dispense water at room temperature, there are several types of dispensers.

Desktop coolers

Desktop coolers are popular for small offices or kitchens. Their main advantage is compactness. They do not take up much space, and there is enough water for several people (usually up to 5). In this case, the bottle is installed only on top of the apparatus.

For desktop dispensers, the main problem is not only where to find a place for it, but also what to put the device on. In this case, the surface should be flat, solid, with easy access for maintenance and water intake. This can be the edge of a table, a cabinet, a special shelf, etc.

Floor coolers

These dispensers are considered the most popular in sales. They are installed in offices or at home. Depending on the cost of the device, coolers can be used to heat water, but do not have a cooling function. Maximum equipment - heating up to almost boiling and cooling up to +4 degrees.

Floor standing dispensers are more expensive. They do not require any stands or fixtures. Their significant drawback is their size. It is worth thinking carefully about where to install it in the house. After all, access should be open and convenient.

Coolers with different bottle placement

  • Top-mounted bottle. In this case, a certain physical strength is required to install the container, which is a significant drawback of a dispenser of this model. In addition, with a decrease in the amount of water in the bottle, air from the outside, that is, the air of the room, will get inside it. Since the air around us in a confined space is filled with contaminated particles, bacteria, the remaining water in the bottle will also be “enriched” with these microbes. In coolers with a lower capacity setting, the ingress of bacteria is minimal.
  • With lower bottle installation. Such models are easier to use, as well as to replace the container. Here, even a physically weaker person can replace him on his own. Therefore, buyers are more likely to purchase such dispenser models.
    A special cabinet allows you to hide the bottle - we get a beautiful view of the device and ease of use. In addition to aesthetics, we get another advantage - water is hidden from sunlight, which also affects the development of bacteria in it.
    The most popular bottom-mounted cooler has a hot / cold water tank that can serve up to 20 people. The cost of such devices is higher, including due to the design. Indeed, a special pump is used to transfer water into containers, as well as additional sensors and elements.

Coolers without heating (without heating and cooling)

These models only give out water at room temperature. Therefore, such devices are purchased for installation in kindergartens, educational institutions, shops, etc. After all, the main thing is safety and convenience. Since the dispenser does not have a heating function, their cost is lower than other models. Also, there is no need to connect the device to the power supply. Hence the main plus of the model - installation almost anywhere in the room.

Coolers without cooling

Yes, this can also happen, despite the contradiction with the name of the device (recall, in translation from English, the word cooler means "cooler"). Such models can be of two types:

  • to supply only room temperature water;
  • for heating water (with a kettle) + for supplying water at room temperature.

Structurally, the dispensers will differ only in the number of taps: two (room temperature water + hot water) or one (room temperature water only). An exception are models that have two taps, both for supplying water at room temperature.

Coolers are different in style

Most often, dispensers are produced by the manufacturer in a classic design, which is suitable for any kitchen / office style. In addition, some models are created in hi-tech or techno style.

Coolers are different in color

White is a classic color for any home appliance. Therefore, the dispenser is no exception. In order for the device to "fit" well into the interior of an office or home, manufacturers produce them in different colors (red, black, white, yellow, blue, silver, etc.), with a pattern, decorative ornaments and etc.

Coolers with additional functions

  • Aeration. In this case, in a special compartment of the dispenser, a carbon dioxide bottle is placed, designed for about 1000 portions of sparkling water (or 100 liters). In this case, the degree of aeration is set individually according to your taste.
  • Filtration. Installation filters for water purification only available in top-bottle dispensers. At the same time, a double filter cleans the water from rust, dangerous microorganisms, chlorine, heavy metals, bacteria. As a result, the cooler produces soft water without any odors. The volume of "work" of such a filter is about 5 thousand. liters.
  • Ozonation. This is the disinfection of water in the vessel of the device, as well as the destruction of unpleasant odors and tastes. In this case, no chemical agents are used. Ozonation is often not recommended - it is enough to do it 1-2 times a month.
  • With ultraviolet lampirradiating the bottle from the inside, killing all germs and bacteria. The UV lamp is located in a storage tank inside the housing. It disinfects water by blocking the multiplication of microbes and bacteria in the water and on the internal elements of the case.
  • With built-in refrigeratorequipped with shelves for storing / cooling any products. The volume of the refrigeration device located under the main body of the dispenser is from 10 to 60 liters. Moreover, some models have a compartment for making ice. Such a cooler is installed on the floor, while the bottle is always placed in its upper part. Dispensers with a built-in refrigerator are compressor-driven by their design. Most often, such a device is purchased for offices for a team of up to 20 people.
  • With teapots. This dispenser model has two teapots - a teapot and one for boiling water, located in the upper part of the body. The tap through which the water is supplied from the bottle is also installed at the top.
    The teapot can be heated while maintaining the set temperature. The maximum water temperature in the main kettle is 100 degrees, that is, it boils. A nice bonus of such models is the presence of an additional section for storing food.

Also additional functions of dispensers:

  • With a compartment for cups;
  • Illuminated water distribution area;
  • With an additional tap for supplying water at room temperature;
  • and etc.

Coolers with different taps for water supply

The type of crane affects the pricing of a particular device. Expensive dispensers - with touch control, lower ones - with a mechanical tap. These include:

  • valve,
  • pusch-taps (push a cup on the tap),
  • lever arm,
  • button.

The principle of operation of a cooler with a top loading bottle

The cooler, with heating / cooling of water, with the top loading of the bottle, consists of two containers - for hot and cold liquid. Through a special recess with a hole, water flows from the bottle. When the container is installed in the upper part of the body, the valve located on its lid is pushed inward. From the bottle, water enters two tanks located inside the cooler: one for cooling water, the other for heating.

Heating occurs due to a tubular electric heater (TEN) or an electric sensor. For cooling, a compressor or electronic cooling (using a Peltier board) is used. Special sensors monitor the water temperature, which must be constant at the set values. In the event that water spills, it will fall into a special water intake compartment.

The dispenser is powered by 220 volts.

Advantages of water coolers

Before buying any equipment, you need to weigh the pros and cons. To do this, we list the positive and negative aspects of purchasing a dispenser.

  • Simplicity and ease of use. There is no difficulty in choosing programs, turning on the device, replacing a bottle, etc.
  • Saving time in obtaining clean water at a given temperature.
  • Protection from children. To avoid accidental supply of hot water from the device, there is a button for its blocking.
  • The drip tray prevents excess water from spilling out.
  • Illumination of the water distribution area makes it comfortable to pour, even at night.
  • The temperature range of water is for every taste: from +95 (heating) to +4 (cooling) degrees Celsius. This is very convenient, especially in the case of quick boiling water. In this case, the water is heated to a high temperature, excluding its boiling. This is important, because at the moment of boiling, useful elements of water are lost.
  • Variety of models for the price - for any wallet.

  • Compressor dispensers cool water quickly enough in hot weather. The disadvantage of this type of cooler is its high cost.
  • When using filters, the water is purified from microbes, harmful microorganisms. At the same time, the necessary trace elements are preserved.
  • Rational consumption of electricity, because the device does not work all the time. With the help of a special mechanism, he controls the temperature of the water, only periodically heating or cooling it.
  • The device is programmed to turn off at night, as well as when not in use for a long time.
  • The device is resistant to voltage changes in the network. It is reliable, of high quality, and has a long-term use.
  • In order to “fit” the dispenser into the kitchen, you can choose a certain color and design. An easier and more common way is build into a kitchen set. Then the kitchen will look like a single whole, without household appliances and other conspicuous assistants.

Disadvantages of water coolers

  • Dispensers with electronic cooling have low water performance in hot weather. In this case, cooling takes a long time.
  • The apparatus with the upper arrangement of the bottle has a significant inconvenience - it is the installation of the container in a special holder on the body. This requires a certain amount of physical strength and skill.
  • As a preventive measure, it is recommended to regularly take the device to a service center for sanitation and disinfection.
  • The bottles are not for single use. Empty containers are transferred to special centers, where they must be processed, disinfected, and then filled with water. Compliance with all disinfection technologies remains on the conscience of the company providing this service.

  • Inevitably, room air enters the inside of the bottle along with bacteria. Humidity, as well as the closedness of the container (greenhouse effect), are excellent conditions for the growth of bacteria. Therefore, the less water remains in the bottle, the more harmful substances have accumulated in it.
  • The use of plastic (what the bottle is made of) in itself will not give environmentally friendly water, especially if it is in direct sunlight. The higher the temperature, the more hazardous to health substance, bisphenol, will be released. There is no guarantee that when storing or transporting the bottle until it reaches your home / office, it was not in extreme heat.
  • Preventive cleaning of the dispenser is the key to your health. In order for the water to contain a minimum of bacteria, to remain as pure and useful as possible, it is necessary to carry out a professional cleaning of the device at least once every 3–6 months. To do this, you need to disassemble the cooler, rinse it, remove accumulated dirt and bacteria. This can be done independently or by inviting a specialist. It is also necessary to wipe the taps and the body as a whole a couple of times a month.

In conclusion, we note some requirements for the location of dispensers in the room. Since hot / cold water coolers use a fan, there must be a certain amount of space around the unit. Direct sunlight is not allowed. And the air temperature in the room should be in the range from 0 to +25 degrees Celsius. If you follow these recommendations, the dispenser will last a long time.
