Design and design of multi-level ceilings from plasterboard

Design and design of multi-level ceilings from plasterboard

Often in an apartment or office space, there is a need to visually separate the areas from each other, which is done with a multi-level ceiling made of plasterboard.

Drywall is so easy to use material that it easily allows you to translate any fantasy into ready-made architectural solutions.

In the photo, sometimes such a multi-level ceiling looks so rich that there is a risk to evaluate this kind of finishing works mistakenly expensive and refuse.

Drywall is a layer of gypsum, fixed on a cardboard basis - brittle finishing material.

In the outlets there is a wall and ceiling gypsum board that is divided into ordinary and moisture resistant( for installation in sanitary rooms).

Application of plasterboard for the decoration of the ceiling allows you to get a perfectly flat surface.

And its use in several levels will bring a special charm to the interior.

New apartments are sold mostly without finishing, so the design of the dwelling and the design options can be ordered separately from the builder or make by yourself.

In a modern new housing stock, the most frequently offered options are studio apartments, where space for a kitchen, living room and bedroom is allocated in one room, and luxury apartments with a spacious corridor, a large kitchen and a roomy living room.

In both cases, I want to highlight different zones within the same room. So, for example, in the kitchen, you can visually separate the area where the food is prepared, from the zone where they are eating, using a multi-level ceiling.

The design of the living room is done by arranging different ceilings above the television zone, a corner for relaxation and a playground for the child.

In the studio apartment, there is a need to allocate even more areas: a place for the kitchen, a living room, a bedroom, a workplace.

The purpose of our article is to tell you how to make a multi-level ceiling from gypsum board easy and inexpensive with your own hands.

Features of multi-level structures

  • Preliminary work - sketching and marking
  • Set of frame and fixing of plasterboard sheets
  • Fastening of drywall sheets
  • Features of multi-level structures

    Multi-level construction is mounted very quickly, much faster than traditional preparation of the ceiling for painting or wallpapering.

    On the multi-level ceiling of gypsum board, points with illumination are mounted, therefore it is possible to highlight certain areas of the room with light.

    A two-level ceiling made of plasterboard is the most common ceiling solution.

    In high premises( height of walls not less than 3,5 meters) there is an opportunity to realize a ceiling in three levels.

    It should be taken into account that the load on the skeleton of the ceiling is increased and it is necessary to use the reinforced profile. This leads to an increase in the cost of the ceiling.

    In apartments and offices with a standard height of 2.8-3 meters, the third level will make the building visually lower.

    The photo shows several versions of multi-level structures.

    Preliminary work - sketch and markup

    We will work out the design. Preparatory work should begin with a sketch of the future multi-level ceiling. Ideas can be portrayed with their own hands or find a photo on the Internet.

    Draw a scale in the room, apply windows and doors on it, observing the proportions of the distance from the walls. Separately draw and cut sketches of furniture with the same scale.

    Browse photos and videos of various interiors, find out which ceiling options you liked and can be implemented in your room.

    At this stage, you should not think about how complicated the installation of a solution - absolutely any design can be performed without problems.

    Move the layout of furniture according to the drawing of the room, determine which zones will be inside the room and work out the design of each of them.

    Determine where there will be overhead electricity, in which places it is necessary to bring an additional wall.

    Electrical points ensure that it is possible to turn on the backlight over different zones.

    For example, the lighting of the playing area is made autonomously from the rest zone. If the room is large, then it is worth even over one zone to think about two or three light intensities.

    So, when you turn on the first half of the lamps in the room will be muted light, and bright lighting is achieved by including the second part. These points should be envisaged at the planning stage.

    Several options can be fixed on the photo - the work will be done more precisely if there is a clear idea of what the result is expected.

    The completed sketch is the complete design of your multi-level ceiling.

    When the sketch is finished, you can start marking and start the installation yourself. First of all, clean the surface of whitewash, tiles or wallpaper.

    If the old coating is behind, then it must be cleaned with a special brush.

    Finishing, which holds tightly, can stay, but it is necessary to check if there are any cracks under it, which, aggravated in the future, will damage the skeleton of our multi-level ceiling.

    Set of frame and fixing of plasterboard sheets

    To make the assembly of the frame, take the tools:

    • marker;
    • cutting tool( Bulgarian or scissors);
    • drill;
    • knife for making holes;
    • plane for processing before puttying;
    • safety glasses.

    The frame structure for the ceiling gypsum board starts with a set of profiles. Usually use profiles CD and UD( the letter "D" marks the profiles for use on the ceiling).

    CD( width 6 cm, thickness 2.5 cm, length 3 or 4 meters) - the main profile, each sheet of drywall is attached to 4 or more such profiles.

    UD( width and thickness of 2.5 cm, length 3 or 4 meters, the thickness of steel varies depending on the manufacturer) - carries an auxiliary function, located on the perimeter of the room.

    The frame and sheets are mounted on video.

    Video:

    The first step is to mount the frame to walls and ceiling. On the perimeter of the walls along the marked lines( 5-8 cm below the base level) are attached UD profiles.

    Now you need to install the hangers and type CD profiles already inserted into the guides. Then it is necessary to install transverse jumpers and fix them with locks with carriers.

    The CD profile is mounted on a U-shaped suspension fixed to the ceiling, and its edges are inserted into the UD profile. CD profiles are placed at a distance of no more than 40-45 cm from each other.

    Periodically check the frame with a water level.

    Small deviations are now invisible, but after the multilevel construction is completed, the slope of the sheets will be visible.

    If the second-level edge of the project is planned to be curved, then it must be formed from profiles that are bent by incising and giving the desired shape.

    There are ready curved profiles on sale, but there will not be much difference between made and bought.

    Before dialing the profile on the second level, it is necessary to screw the drywall on the visible part of the first one.

    If for residential premises we chose the usual drywall, then for the kitchen it is worth to take a moisture-proof, and for the bathroom it is simply obligatory.

    Sheets are fixed to the frame with the help of self-tapping screws for work on gypsum cardboard.

    Skeleton for ceiling

    There are two options for preparing drywall - to make all the holes and spills on the floor, and then start the installation, or, attaching to the frame, cut the unnecessary plaster knife.

    After completing the structure of the frame, lead the wiring to the points where the fixtures will be placed.

    If you do not have experience working with electricity yourself, check the corresponding instructions with the photo about safe operation. All wires must be wrapped in corrugation.

    Next to each point, allow the electrical cable to be 15 cm wide. When buying light fixtures, pay attention to the possibility of installing them in plasterboard - very powerful ones are not suitable due to excessive heating.

    Fastening of plasterboard sheets

    When work on a set of profiles has been done, it is possible to start the installation of sheets of drywall of the second level.

    There are jumpers between the upper and lower levels, which allow to strengthen the structure.

    To avoid inaccuracies on the second layer of a multi-level design, it is desirable to trim the sheets after fixing.

    To do this, cut the sheet in black( with a large margin) on the floor, screw it to the frame and make a clean cut with a paint knife.

    The lower edge of the multi-level construction is the most noticeable part. If its sheets will not overlap the frame in some places, the overall appearance will be hopelessly corrupted.

    Do not hurry up the final trimming, making sure that the surface of the sheet exactly matches the skeleton.

    Video:

    Small chips that have arisen from trimming with a knife can be rubbed, giving them a flat or round shape.

    The design of any multi-level ceiling can spoil the irregularities and errors, so do not forget to patch the seams between the sheets.

    Then all the finished structure must be leveled with plaster. After that, you can decorate with wallpaper or simply paint.

    Now you have a complete idea of how you can make a multi-level gypsum plasterboard ceiling with your own hands.
