At the All-Russian Institute of Plant Industry named after Nikolai Vavilov, cultivated potatoes Solanum tuberosum were crossed with wild related species of stoloniferum, but the resulting hybrids were low-yielding and showed signs of wild plants. In particular, Golubizna was obtained at the All-Russian Research Institute of Potato named after Alexander Lorch by crossing a 128–6 hybrid with Gatchinsky potatoes.

In November 1988, this institution declared the Blue Potato potato to the State Commission for the passage of variety testing. It lasted for four years. In 1993, Golubizna was included in the State Register for cultivation in the Central Black Earth, Volga-Vyatka, Central and North Caucasus regions.
