What is the danger of such a connection?
Twisting is the most dangerous method of connecting wires, becausein this case the contact of two or more conductors will depend only on the quality of the work done. If you weakly bend the veins, they will fade after a while, and a weak contact forms in the bonding site. This problem zone will become constantly hot with increased current loads, insulation will begin to melt, and as a result, a short circuit may occur, not to mention the fire and electric shock.
It is not in vain that the rules of the PUE are strictly forbidden to use this method in electrical work. Despite this, most of the electricians, and even experienced ones, use this method in everyday repair work.
It should be noted that if you correctly twist the veins between each other, carefully isolating the bare area, there will be no problems. Moreover, twisted veins can last several decades, given that most of the old houses and apartments used this method.
So, how to correctly twist the wires? We will now talk about this!
Detailed instructions
First, we consider the simplest version when it is necessary to fasten two single-conductor conductors from the same metal( for example, copper).
The technology is as follows:
- Carefully clean both veins from insulation by about 4-5 cm. You can also use a special tool to remove insulation.
- Clean the exposed contacts with a cloth soaked in acetone( degrease).
- Sand the edges to a metallic color.
- We cross the conductors between each other and one of the wires is carefully wound on the other with the help of pliers. The number of turns must be made at least five.
- The second is wound the same way for 5-7 turns.
- We isolate the finished strand with the help of insulating tape. It is also recommended to use a shrink tube - cambric, which reliably protects the exposed area from the external environment.
As you can see, there is nothing complicated. The peculiarity is that it is necessary to strip the veins no less than 5 cm and twist the pliers to ensure that there is an unbreakable and reliable contact.
I would also like to give a couple of tips on the more difficult situation when it is necessary to make a twist of solid and stranded wire. In this case, first repeat "1" and "2" from the instruction provided above. Then it is necessary to cross products and rewire the stranded wire in the middle of the single-core wire( at a distance of 2.5 cm from the end). When all the turns are wound, the free end of the solid conductor must be folded with the pliers in the direction of the turns, as shown in the photo below. After this, the connection is isolated and placed in a junction box. By the way, in the same way you can make a good twist of two stranded wires.
It should be noted that making aluminum and copper strands is not highly recommended by experienced electricians, not to mention the GOST standards. This is due to the different resistance of metals, as well as by the fact that during the interaction copper and aluminum are oxidized, which appreciably worsens the electrical contact. Another drawback is that there will be twisting of different metals( by physical properties): hard and soft, which also worsens the contact.

Useful tips from
professionals To make the twisting of wires reliable, durable and safe,we recommend that you take into account the following recommendations:
- Additionally twisted contacts can be connected by subsequent welding or soldering, which will make contact maximumreliable and inextricable. By the way, soldering is best used if both veins have a large cross-section.
- Modern WAGO terminals can be used much more efficiently, moreover, the joining process will be faster. It should also be noted that it is possible to connect not only aluminum and copper to the wagons, but also several wires at the same time, and they can even be of different cross-sections, which will not affect the reliability of the contact in any way. If you decide to connect the wires in a wall outlet or a chandelier, it is better to do this with the WAGO terminal blocks.
- PPE clamps increase the reliability of the connection, making it safer. Products are cheap and have a low cost, so we recommend using wire twisting with PPE caps.
- After you make the connection of the wires twisted, do not rush to hide the new assembly in the junction box. Within a few hours, let the electric circuit work, and then check the temperature at the place of fastening. If the connection is heated, it is better to remake everything, becausethis indicates an unreliable contact.
It is important to note that none of the above options makes the braid waterproof, so if you decide to bond the veins under the plaster in the wall, and without the box, be sure to insulate the connector with cambriches.
That's all you need to know about how to properly twist the wires with your own hands. We strongly recommend that you use more modern methods, and use twisting only when installing temporary wiring! Do not twist under tension.for today there is no so safe way. Any electrical installation work must be done with the light off!
