Installing a metal door with your own hands

Have decided to install a new metal door, but do not trust third-party installers? No problem! With the implementation of all the necessary measures you can manage on your own. Read the guide and proceed.

Dimensions of a new door: important nuances

To mount the workyou passed as quickly and with minimal inconvenience, even at the stage of choosing a new metal door, be attentive to the performance of the necessary measurements.

Before you go to the store, measure the doorway. This work is complicated by the presence of a fairly thick layer of mortar along the perimeter and, of course, the door frame. Because of them, it is difficult to clearly define the boundaries of the opening, which causes a number of inconveniences in the measurement process and can distort its results.

For the measurements to be as successful and accurate as possible, read the following recommendations:

• , before the direct installation of the structure, the lower part of the opening is released up to the floor. The material, due to which the lining is raised, as well as the pushers and other elements will be dismantled;
• top of the doorway to increase, i.e.to raise, it is forbidden;
• lateral parts can be slightly expanded if necessary. Here it is important to determine the width of the supporting transverse element, which is also the upper edge of the doorway. The width of the door to be installed should be about 2-2.5 cm less than the analogous parameter of the support element.

Based on the above, the box of the new metal door should be 4-5 cm lower and narrower than the opening.

After removing the necessary measurements, go to the preparation of working tools.

In addition, you need to prepare the material to fill the gaps between the walls of the opening and the box of the new metal door. You can use cement mortar or a mounting foam. Foam is more convenient to handle.

Also prepare the fasteners. Traditionally, reinforcing bars with a diameter of 1-1.2 cm or metal anchors are used.

Preparing an opening for installing a new door

Let's start dismantling the old door. At this stage, we are not particularly cautious. We try only not to destroy the walls, if there is no need to expand the doorway. In particular, it is necessary to work with walls made of brick and foam blocks.

Remove the old canvas or loosen the hinges from the lath, in accordance with the features of the design of the door.

With a saw or a sanding machine, we make several cuts along the perimeter of the door frame, and then take it out of the opening with a crowbar.

With perforator we clean the perimeter of the opening from the excess of old plaster and cement mortar.

At this stage, we pay special attention to the bottom of the doorway. Often after the dismantling of the box in the lower part of the opening, a rotten wooden beam or an old masonry is found. From spoiled items get rid of, and in their place lay out a new brick or fix the beam of the required height.

After installation, the new metal door must be level with the floor of the corridor. In this case, it is important to consider whether the floor will subsequently be filled with a screed or such work is not provided.

The main part of the installation

At this stage we get support from an assistant - it is impossible to mount a metal door alone.

We install the box in the doorway and with the help of the level we check the possibility of its vertical installation. We check on all planes, it is better in several places. Usually it is enough to do the following:

• check the vertical stand on the inner end;
• check one of the neighboring sides;
• check the bottom bulkhead.

It is important that the indicators show a complete match at all points of verification. If in some place the wall of the opening prevents the door frame from being installed smoothly, get rid of the excess element with a chisel, grinder, perforator or other suitable device.

After ensuring the evenness of the box, fix it with pegs. Fixation is better performed with the use of two pads for each seat. One wooden lining should be 0.5 cm thicker than the gap between the box and the wall, and the second one should be made in the form of a wedge. In this case, the second part of the wedge needs to be made much longer than the first, observing a small angle of the bevel. This will allow you to more easily and quickly put the box on the level.

Helpful hint: it is better to abstain from using the "grandfather" way of temporary fixing the door frame with nails, becauseit is unreliable. The box can simply move.

Putting the box on the level, proceed to its mounting. The door can be locked in several ways. The concrete variant is chosen taking into account the features of the door design.

door frame. Important: Regardless of the chosen fixing method, there must be at least three fixation points on each side, and two on the bottom and top.

First attach the side of the box with the hinges. We start from the highest point. Be sure to check the correctness of the installation level after creating each attachment point.

Secure the side of the box with the hinges, hang the metal sheet and adjust the position of the box again. Be sure to check the absence of excessive tension and any kind of deformation box.

Having convinced of absence of the mentioned problems, we remove a cloth, we fix other side and crosspieces of a box. At each stage, we check the correctness of the installation using the level.

Door frame fixing options

It was previously mentioned that the box fastening can be performed in several ways. A total of 3 basic methods are used.

Attachment for eyes

The most common mounting option. The box is attached to the eyes by means of pins or anchors. At the metal doors of the new sample, the eyes are welded to the box.

The commit is performed in the following order:

• through a hole in the eye of a perforator in the wall creates a 10-15-centimeter recess;
• insert a pin or an anchor into the prepared cavity. The pin must be prepared beforehand. To do this, it is enough to take the reinforcement with a diameter of the order of 1 cm, sharpen one edge of it, and flatten it with a hammer, forming a head;
• the fasteners are driven into the recess as far as the stop;
• pin is fastened with eye-welding, the anchor is tightened with the socket wrench.

Fastening through the box

box The procedure is the same as in the previous method, but the holes for the fasteners are created right at the end of the metal box.

Attachment with grip

Also suitable for mounting a metal door. The box is fixed with an outer edge to the opening, and on the inside, a hook is welded to fasten it to the wall.

This method is optimal for buildings with monolithic walls and eliminates the need for drilling holes.

The last strokes of

After fixing the box, hang the canvas and make sure its movement is correct. To do this, first open the door about 45 degrees, and after at 90. It is important that in these positions the canvas does not move spontaneously.

Make sure that there are no backlashes when the metal door is closed. If there are no problems, we proceed to fill the gaps between the walls and the box.

For fixing, you can use foam or cement mortar with the addition of alabaster. With foam, it's easier to work and faster. However, the solution is characterized by higher strength.

We fill all gaps with the selected material. For foam filling we use a special gun. In the case of the use of cement mortar, it is best to distribute it manually, not with a spatula or trowel. The consistency of the cement slurry must be such that it does not float. The best option is a loose condition, reminiscent of the curd mass.

Checking the work of locks. On the perimeter of the new door glue the seal. We fix the external platbands. To fix them, we use bolts or rivets.

The process of installing a new metal door is almost complete. You can only arrange slopes from the inside of the doorway at your discretion( plaster, plastic, plasterboard, etc.).They will allow you to hide the fasteners and give the composition a normal appearance.
