How to find out if there is a grounding in the outlet or not?

The need to verify the "land" in the home network arises if you just moved into a new house or apartment and are not sure that the protection is working. There are special meters that allow you to measure the resistance of the ground loop, but the cost is large. At home, it is easy to check the presence of a working PE wire and without additional meters. Next we will tell readers of the site Sam Electric how to check the grounding in a private house or apartment with their own hands.

Test procedure

So, to find out if there is a grounding in the house, you first need to turn off the electricity on the input shield and disassemble one of the outlets. After that you should visually see if the yellow-green wire is connected to the corresponding terminal on the socket, as shown in the photo below:

Correct wiring

If only two cores are connected to the terminals, for example, with blue and brown insulation( zero and phase, according to the color markingwires), then you do not have a ground connection in the house or apartment. And one more thing - if there is a jumper between the zero and the grounding terminal, then it means that the wiring has been done to you in the room, which is extremely dangerous.

So, for example, in the screw terminals there are all three conductors, and you want to check the integrity of the ground in the socket. First, we recommend performing a multi-meter ground loop efficiency test. It is made very simply:

  1. Turn on the electricity on the shield.
  2. Switch the tester to the voltage measurement mode.
  3. Measure the voltage between phase and zero.
  4. Carry out a similar measurement between phase and earth.

If in the latter case the multimeter shows a voltage slightly different from the first measurement, then the grounding in the private house or apartment is present. Did the numbers show up on the scoreboard? The ground loop is missing or not working. On how to use the multimeter at home, we told you in the relevant article!

Using a multimeter

If you do not have a tester at your fingertips, you can check the quality of the ground using a control lamp assembled from improvised tools. So, you can do the test lamp yourself according to the following scheme( 1 - chuck, 2 - wires, 3 - end pieces):

Photo control

With the help of an indicator screwdriver you need to check where the phase is and where is zero. The connection of the outlet is not always done according to the rules. Perhaps then who connected the contacts, mixed them with colors and now the phase is blue, which is not right.

First, touch one end of the wire to the phase terminal, and the second to the zero. The test lamp should light up. After that, the end of the wire that you touched to zero, move to the grounding bar( shown in the photo below).

Earthing antennae

If the light is on, the circuit is running, the dim light indicates that the ground loop condition is not satisfactory. The light bulb does not light, so the "earth" does not work. It should also be noted that if the circuit is protected by a residual current device, the RCD may be triggered when checking the earthing reliability, which also indicates the operation of the ground loop.

If you touch the wires from the control to phase and ground, but the light does not light, try to move the end of the phase switch to zero to make sure the circuit is checked. This is the case when there is a chance that the connection was wrong and the phase is not the color.

Indirect evidence

Here are a few more situations where you can be sure that the grounding in a private house, apartment or dacha is not connected or at least works poorly: the

  • water heater or washing machine is shocked;
  • when playing music in the speakers, there is a small noise.

device By this simple procedure, you can independently know the state of the protective circuit. We hope that now you know how to check the grounding in a private house or apartment with your own hands!
