Determination of the thickness of the plywood for the floor

The thickness of the plywood for the floor is selected taking into account the purpose of the room.

Material of different quality, with different composition of impregnation and thickness is used for each specific case.

Plywood is a product assembled from several glued and pressed together thin veneer laths. Most often in the manufacture of plywood used unpaired number of layers.

In this case, each layer is laid perpendicular to the fibers of the previous one, due to which the product is endowed with high strength.

As a raw material for the production of plywood wood of deciduous and coniferous trees is used.

As is known, coniferous wood is an environmentally friendly material that contains in its structure phytoncides that kill and inhibit the development and growth of bacteria.

But this fact nullifies the use of glue, by means of which the layers of plywood are joined.

As a result, the product becomes vulnerable to a microscopic fungus, but is endowed with such important properties as moisture resistance, long service life, fire safety and strength.

The basic principle of selecting and installing plywood on the floor

Plywood sheet material is a good option for leveling the base floor for a laminate, parquet board or linoleum.

It is recommended to choose sheet products made on the basis of birch wood with FK labeling as a flooring inside a house.

1. Product name 2. Product brand 3. Parameters: length, width( mm) 4. Thickness( mm.) 5. Conformity to standards 6. Emission class of formaldehyde 7. Number of sheets, volume and weight of pack 8. Date of production( month / year) 9. Enterprise manufacturer 10. Manipulation marks 11. Country of manufacture

Material with the FSF marking has an increased degree of moisture resistance.

But it is not recommended for use in residential areas, the impregnation used in its manufacture has a high toxicity index.

Otherwise, the choice of thickness of the plywood flooring will depend:

  • from the smoothness of the base working surface of the floor;
  • of the desired strength of the floor covering;
  • from the expected height of the future floor.

For ideally flat surfaces, it is recommended to use sheet decks with a thickness of 8 to 10 mm.

In this case, the plywood must have a thickness of not more than 12 mm - this is the most optimal parameter, while the product with a thickness of more than 16 mm, is already considered impractical to use.

The device of plywood flooring is carried out on previously installed lags. Usually with their help they arrange the floors in a wooden house with the possibility to adjust the height.

What material is used to make logs, it does not matter, it can be either coniferous or hardwood.

As a rule, the second and third grade of non-planed boards are used for this process.

The laths are fitted on the laths, which allows the rough construction of the floor to obtain the necessary strength. Then the plywood and the subsequent finish coating are spread.

Between the plywood segments during the installation leave gaps of 0.3-0.4 mm, which excludes the possibility of the appearance of a squeak.

Parameters of plywood sheets for laminate

At present, a common floor covering is a laminate.

Its flooring is carried out on a plywood base, the thickness of which, in turn, depends on the base floor support, as well as the transverse dimension of the laminate.

When purchasing plywood for laminate flooring, it is necessary to consider what technology was used to level the floor.

So, plywood can be mounted on logs, on wooden boards and on a concrete base.

The first method is "lagging" - is considered better than others, despite the fact that it is more labor-intensive.

In this case, it becomes possible to make the carrier base perfectly smooth, which will allow the laminate to be laid high. For this purpose, plywood sheets with a thickness of 12 to 16 mm are purchased.

In the second case, the sheets are mounted on the boards of the main floor, the base of which must be firm and even. Here you need a plywood with a thickness of 10 mm and above.

The material is fixed under the laminate, laid on the boards, using screws or screws.

Plywood coating for a laminate can also be mounted on a flat concrete base, by gluing.

As a fixing compound, it is better to use a two-component adhesive that, after drying, firmly holds the material, and does not require the use of additional fasteners.

What is the thickness of the plywood sheet for the laminate to be determined, determined by starting from the thickness of the laminate itself. As a rule, it should not exceed the thickness of the finish flooring.

Parameters of plywood sheets for linoleum

Before making a plywood liner under linoleum, you need to determine its optimum thickness. The simplified rule "thicker is better", it is not recommended to use it in this case.

Based on actual experience, the following parameters were calculated: the optimum thickness is from 14 to 18 mm, the allowable - varies from 8 mm to 20 mm.

You can choose the linoleum liner from the existing range by following the tips below:

  • MDF or OSB boards are suitable for linoleum, which, unlike classic floor plywood, have a high degree of strength and reliability;
  • You can use pressed veneer or chipboard as a linoleum underlay, but their thickness should be not less than 16 mm, best of all about 20;
  • If the thickness of plywood is less than 12 mm, then it is recommended to cover it in several layers, which will result in an increase in consumables;
  • Hardwood veneer products are more durable than coniferous wood, but less waterproof;
  • If the choice does not suit the appearance of the sheet material, it is not important, as its surface coating will be an aesthetic linoleum. Here the main, strength characteristics.

Plywood flooring for balcony

The floor covering for the balcony can also be made from plywood. Its application will raise the floor to a certain height, warm it and make it pleasant to look at.

To equip the floors of the balcony you will need such materials:

  • standard sheets of plywood( 1250x1250) with a thickness of 12-15 mm;
  • wooden beams 50x50 mm( their length depends on the length of the balcony);
  • drill;
  • hacksaw;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • laminate or linoleum.

As the plywood under the finish coat will be spread on the logs, a frame is made from the beams. Depending on the width of the balcony they are mounted on the floor lengthwise in 2-3 rows, with the same distance from each other.

You can lay logs across the balcony, but in this case the workflow becomes more complicated with regard to the marking for the flooring.

After the measurement of the width of the balcony has been made, the plywood sheet dissolves along with a hacksaw or circular saw.

Half the sheet must be unequal in size. One part of it, with suitable parameters, is laid on logs.

Using a pencil, mark the center of the log on both edges of the sheet, the marked points are connected by a straight line. The line will serve as a guide for screwing self-tapping screws so that they immediately enter the tree, not past.

Screws fix the plywood sheet on the marked line, in increments of 20-25 cm.

In the process of work fasteners should not be saved, and it is recommended to press the sheet as tightly as possible to the floor, otherwise the flooring will creak.

Similar work is carried out with the remaining sheets. Small gaps around the edges of the balcony floor are covered with plywood scraps. On the finished floor, mount any finish coat and install a plinth.

How to properly cut and fit a plywood sheet?

Due to the correct arrangement of plywood sheets, the quality of the rough floor, and thus the duration of operation of the finish coat, depends.

With a standard plywood size of 1250x1250 mm, it is difficult for an inexperienced person to work. Therefore, it is better to divide it into parts, we will get four identical pieces.

Sawing of the material is done carefully, its edges should not be torn or lacquered, which means one thing - low-grade plywood and use it as a substrate there is no sense.

Plywood is expanded into squares, then the finished product segments are laid out on the work surface. Thus, the existing material is visually adjusted to the total area of the room.

Particular attention is paid to the areas of the room with protrusions and niches.

In the process of fitting plywood for arrangement of the rough floor, it is necessary to take into account the gaps between its parts that must be left for possible expansion of the material as a result of humidity.

In this case, the value of the damper joints can be from 8 to 10 mm, the decking of the floor from the wall can be from 15 to 20 mm.

The edges of the plywood coating, in no case should rest against the wall.

Installation of plywood on a concrete screed or a wooden floor base is carried out using the same technology, resembling a brickwork.

The sheets are stacked with a slight offset, which will eliminate the intersection of the four interfacial seams at one point.

After the sheets have been fitted, each of them is recommended to be numbered. You can also transfer the layout plan to paper, which will make it easier to arrange the floor.
