The rules for installing snow-holders on the roof with their own hands, their types

In places with snowy winters, the installation of snow-holders is an obligatory stage in the construction of the roof. A large mass of snow, descended in an unnecessary place, can damage the roofing material, the very construction of the roof, wires, drainage system, air conditioners and ventilation system and even cause injuries in people.

Types of snow holders

The type of construction are:

  • tubular,
  • latticed,
  • lamellar
  • hooks.

Tubular snow holders - metal pipes, threaded in 2-3 rows in special holders mounted on the roof. The retarded volume of snow depends on the thickness of the pipes, the distance between them and the roof, between the fasteners. Plus this design - the ability to increase the length and increase the allowable load by more frequent placement of fasteners and pipes.

Latticed snow holders are similar to a ladder mounted on an edge across the roof. They are made of a metal profile or corner and are also simply elongated and reinforced, like tubular ones. Latticed and tubular species are the most versatile and reliable, can be installed on roofs, both from natural tiles and from sheet materials.

The plate version is able to hold less snow, but is least noticeable on the roof. They are usually made of the same material as the roof itself, and they are more suitable for flat roofs made of metal profiles, metal tiles, etc.

Hooks also detain a small amount of snow and are usually installed on roofs covered with soft materials: ondulin, bitumen shingles.

Plate snow arresters and hooks are cheaper and easier to attach, so they can be used in regions with little or short winters. The roof on which they are installed must have a slope of no more than 30 degrees. One of the varieties of the lamellar snow-holder is the corners, which in the section are a triangle.

It is necessary to decide what kind of view to use before the roofing works are started, since it is better to fasten them simultaneously with the roofing material. An exception can be made for tubular and lattice structures, but for them it will be necessary to provide for reinforcement of the crate. They can be mounted on the roof of any material. Their number and frequency of location depend on the amount of snow, on average falling out over the winter.

Fixing rules

When planning the installation of snow covers on the roof, it is necessary to take into account a number of rules.

  • The cladding in the places of the intended installation should be reinforced, and the elements should be fixed only to it.
  • The lower element must be located at least 40-50 cm from the edge of the roof.
  • Snow holders are located across the roof, parallel to its lower edge.
  • Can be placed in a line( preferably for tubular and latticed) or staggered( plate and hooks).
  • If the roof area is large, then several rows are located with a distance between them of 35-40 cm.
On roofs with a large slope, about 60 degrees, you can avoid installing snow covers, since the snow from them descends. However, such a roof is adversely affected by a strong wind, and more materials are spent on its construction.

Preparatory stage

Even during the construction of the battens in places where it is supposed to fasten snegozaderzhateli, it must be strengthened by a board with a thickness of at least 25 mm. Later, it will be mounted to it. All installation works, like other roofing measures, must be carried out with insurance, observing the safety precautions.

Installation of snow holders

The delivery set usually includes pipes, grilles or profiles of the snow holder, support element, decorative cover. Initially, the roof of the site is marked with the location of the future installation, and a lining element is attached to the roof. At angled snow holders, the decorative cover rests on the side facing upwards, on the lining, at the lamellar ones - it is applied from the bottom in the direction of the roof. The lamellar is screwed on each crest of metal tile, angled - on each comb from above and through one from below.

If there is an attic window on the roof, a snow holder is always installed on top of it.

For fixing it is important to use galvanized self-tapping screws, preferably with a rubber lid to prevent rusty streaks on the roof. The holes for fastening are sealed with rubber gaskets and waterproofed with sealant.

Important! The installation of snow covers does not relieve the need to clean the roof of snow. Thanks to these structures, snow accumulates on the roof and increases the load on it. As a result of the large weight of snow accumulated on the roof, the snow holders themselves can break down, and the roofing material can be seen.
