OSB Production Method Any OSB with an oriented strand board is made from woodworking waste. OSB stands for "oriented chipboard( OSB)" and the main material for it is wood shavings or chips. Usually rectangular wood fragments are used for manufacturing, which are glued together layer by layer. If you look at the photo of the OSB plate, then you can pay attention that the number of layers of chips can be three or four.

The unique uniqueness of such a plate lies in the orientation of the fibers. If you look carefully at the photo, you can pay attention that all the outer layers are longitudinally oriented, and the inner ones are perpendicular, that is, across. The chips thus formed are pressed and glued by impregnation. For this, synthetic wax, tar and boric acid are also used. Such unique properties of OSB slabs allow it to be more solid and sturdy.

Application of

Due to the fact that there are no voids in OSB slabs, they are widely used in the construction industry. This building material is used for finishing both office and residential premises. These plates cover the walls, make them a roofing flooring, used as the base of the floor surface. OSB is used not only for creating doors, but also for soft furniture.

Technical characteristics of OSB slabs

If you take into account the technical characteristics of OSB slabs, they are all divided into 4 main categories:

  1. OSB-1 - chipboards having a low density of material;can be used in rooms only with low humidity. In most cases, they are used only for the manufacture of household items: furniture, wooden packaging, etc.
  2. OSB-2 - having a higher density, therefore they are used as bearing structures used inside dry premises.
  3. OSB-3 - as the reviews show, is by far the most common and it is most often used to build walls, partitions, capital bearing structures. Such building material can be used in rooms with high humidity.
  4. OSB-4 is a very moisture resistant board that is used to work under heavy load.

Without exaggeration, we can say that the properties of the OSB plate are simply unique. If you compare the technical characteristics of OSB slabs, you can see a difference between them. Classify this building material by thickness, which also affects the area of its use. The standard dimensions of the sheets are 2500 x 1250 mm, and in thickness they can be from 6 to 26 mm.

Advantages of

Among the advantages of the OSB board are the following:

  • is relatively high strength( here everything depends on the thickness of the plate);
  • flexibility and lightness, which allows it to be used for sheeting curved surfaces;
  • , unlike plywood OSB slab does not exfoliate;
  • plate is easy to process;
  • has good sound insulation;
  • does not change its shape during operation;
  • light weight( at a thickness of 9 mm the sheet weighs only 18 kg).

Disadvantages of

Sometimes talk about the disadvantages of OSB slabs, among which is called basic - the use of synthetic resins that contain phenol. Phenol does indeed release carcinogens, but today manufacturers are trying to produce this building material without formaldehyde. Such OSB plates are designated by the ECO marking.
