Foam Concrete

Foam concrete is a material widely used in construction due to its positive properties and reasonable cost. It has a number of differences from classic concrete. First of all, this, of course, is a different structure, namely cellular, bubbly, porous - different terms are used. The composition differs from the concrete in that it has a foaming agent.

Usually this is SDO( wood-saponified resin).It should be noted that as a result of the addition of resin, the following changes occur: density decreases( from 100 kg / m3), the share of sand in the final product decreases, etc. Of course, in some cases these positive factors can manifest themselves on the reverse side. Also foam-forming additives are applied;it turns out that the first part of the pores is created by a foaming agent, the second by an additive.

The strength of the foam concrete can be different, depending on which raw materials are used, which was the mode of heat and moisture treatment( TBE).Cellular concrete, in turn, has the property of gaining strength not immediately, but for a long time period. It is necessary to pay tribute to complex additives, as their application brings a number of positive factors, namely: shrinkage decreases, frost and water resistance increases, density increases, and thermal conductivity decreases. Let's consider further foam concrete blocks and their technical characteristics.

Technical characteristics of foam concrete blocks

The structure of the building material does not affect its reliability: the components make it possible to achieve the strength of the finished blocks. Products are excellent in keeping heat, so suitable for economical construction of residential or commercial premises. Elimination of harmful components makes it possible to obtain environmentally friendly products with a long service life. Other technical parameters of the foam concrete include:

  • water absorption: 14% with direct exposure to water;
  • density: from 300 to 1200 kg / m3;
  • thermal conductivity: 0.1-0.38 W / m * K;
  • compressive strength: 2,0-7,5 MPa;
  • shrinkage: not more than 0.5 mm / m;
  • frost resistance: about 35 cycles.

The material has several varieties of brands, which determine its special qualities and parameters. For example, grades D300-500 refer to thermal insulation( not suitable for construction).Stamps D600-1000 are considered structural and heat-insulating, and D1100-1200 are structural. Accordingly, their density will be from 300 to 1200 kg / m3.

Disadvantages of

Of course, first of all it is necessary to determine the main disadvantages of the material. Porous structure reduces weight, saves material, but greatly reduces strength.

In some cases, the material is not recommended at all, especially in those cases when a building object can be subjected to a natural impact of shock or seismic type. In other words, with an earthquake such a structure is unlikely to survive, at best everything will be limited to cracks, due to which, in some cases, the structure will become unsuitable for further use.

It is also not possible to use foam concrete in areas where there are strong changes in temperature, pressure, humidity. In general, the buildings made of foam concrete are durable, if plaster or some other materials are applied from the outside, which protect the material from the effects of precipitation. As an example, look at the article about the construction of a garage made of foam concrete.

Advantages of

There are a lot of advantages. First, these are high thermal insulation properties( compared to conventional concrete).As a result, the house is warmer. Secondly, low water absorption, in contrast to aerated concrete. Thirdly, much less cement is required for manufacturing - so the cost is low. Fourthly, a small mass of foam concrete blocks reduces transportation, laying, etc. Fifthly, it is very easy to work with this material - it is easy to saw, dowels, nails, etc. are whipped. Sixthly, it is completely ecological.
