Classic

All this is worth buying and equipping only if it is planned to engage in this art professionally, since a special tool is not cheap. And the skills of work, to be honest, also need a very high level.

English or film technology

Film or English technique consists in applying a special self-adhesive film of different colors to the glass, according to a pre-prepared drawing.

Each of the fragments in this stained-glass window, after gluing them, is framed with lead tape. If the glass with this stained glass window is installed in the interior door, then the lead tape is glued from its two sides. The lead tape does not require soldering; its cut ends are overlapped on each other and rolled with a roller.

Advantages of film technology is that all the work is carried out on a single glass, which does not require cutting into individual fragments and their complex processing.

In addition, the stained glass in the English technique can be made much faster than the classic, and it is able to make yourself even a novice master with a neat approach.

"Fusing"

"Fusing" can not be called a new technique for manufacturing stained glass paintings, since it has been used since the production of glass, of course, has undergone significant improvements over time.

are very beautiful and original. The name of the technique "fusing" comes from the English word "fusion", which translates as a mixture or an alloy. It is this process that occurs with glass during the manufacture of stained glass in a similar way. At home, it is impossible to make a stained-glass window in this technique, since it requires special equipment for melting glass, which can be provided only at very high temperatures.

Stained glass made in this way has no seams and does not require the use of metal frames.

The process of creating a stained glass painting is as follows:

• On a transparent glass of the correct size, laid on a prepared sheet with a pattern, a mosaic of colored glass pieces is laid out on a special glue.
• Further, this billet goes to a special furnace, where the process of sintering individual fragments of glass takes place between each other and with the substrate on which they are laid.

Technology "fusing" is the gradual heating of the mosaic and its fretting at a temperature of 800 degrees - this is the level required for melting and sintering individual pieces of glass between them. Melting takes place under strict control, as the moment of the product's readiness can not be missed, otherwise the process of changing the structure of the material will start-the devitrification, at which the glass crystallizes.

• When the structure of the stained glass window becomes uniform, the stained-glass window needs to be cooled.
• Next, another annealing is performed, i.e., heating the glass, followed by cooling.
• "Fusing" includes not only melting and sintering, but also glass processing techniques during these processes. In addition, if the desired result is not achieved, postforming is carried out, consisting in another heating and giving the stained-glass window a convex or curved shape.

At the end of the work a glass painting is obtained, from glass of different shades, reliably and hermetically welded together. This technique is used to make stained glass, performed in different styles, as it gives almost unlimited possibilities in creating paintings of any subject.

"Tiffany"

The technique of stained glass "tiffany" is carried out in a way that is somewhat similar to the classical one. In order to make a picture in this technique, a life-size drawing template in two copies is prepared, one of which is cut into separate fragments, according to which pieces of glass of different colors will be cut out.

The edges of the pieces of glass are processed and polished to smoothness. Then, each of the elements of the stained glass is edged with a copper tape, the ends of which are welded together. In the next step, the framed fragments are joined together by a pattern with the help of a tin soldering carried out by a powerful soldering iron.

Unlike the classical, in the "tiffany" technique only copper tape is used, which is much more flexible and stable than the lead profile and easier to give a given deformation, with the subsequent retention of the shape, which allows it to frame even small parts of the stained glass. Thanks to this, the "tiffany" technique is used not only for stained glass windows, but also for making many different interior elements, for example lampshades of lamp lamps and chandeliers.

All parts "dressed" in a copper frame, after soldering the ends of the profile, are rolled with a roller before joining the general composition, during which the tape compresses the glass fragment.

Sandblasting technology

Sandblasting stained-glass windows are manufactured using special equipment that feeds under high pressure a jet of air with sand.

Creation of bending patterns using this technique is done as follows:

• A transparent glass sheet is prepared on the surface of which a pattern of the pattern is applied and fixed.
• Open sections of the stencil are treated with sand, supplied by a thin stream under high pressure. The surface from this effect loses its transparency and becomes opaque.
• After completion of work, the stencil is removed from the glass, and on the surface remains an exquisite air pattern.

This type of stained glass does not require the installation of skeletons and complicated figured cutting of glass, as well as gluing the film. But, as already mentioned, the necessary condition is the availability of special equipment. If desired, of course, you can replace the jet of sand with sandpaper, but in this case you will have to make a stencil made of thin metal, since the cardboard is an unstable material, it will begin to wear out and will not allow reproducing the exact pattern. In addition, manual work will take a lot of time., And the quality, the depth of the drawing will still not be the same.

Molded technique

This infrequently used stained glass technique can be called one of the most difficult, as each of the fragments of the mosaic is blown or cast from the colored glass by hand. In the process of this piece-making, glass fragments are given a special conceived texture, which contributes to certain optical effects, a game of refraction of light rays, which creates the effect of pronounced bulk. Then the fragments are collected in a single picture using mortars and metal reinforcement.

It is very difficult to make a stained-glass window in such a technique at home, as here we need, in addition to equipment, completely specific technological skills of glass processing. As a rule, such stained-glass windows are author's art works, and in practical use of private housing practically do not find use.

Technique of etching

The technique of creating on the stele a relief pattern by etching involves the use of hydrofluoric acid, which has the ability to destructively act on the main component of the glass mass - silicon dioxide.

When the acid is applied to the glass, its layers begin to break down. In order for the substance to melt only those parts of the glass sheet that need to be applied, the stencil is made of an acid resistant material. Stencils make it possible to create clear single-layered or multilayered drawings on a glass surface, with a pronounced relief of various depths. The more layers in the relief, the more voluminous. In this case, the acid is applied to different parts of the picture as many times as many layers suggest the selected pattern. A single-layered stained-glass window is made in one step, and in this case, the application of the acid simply cloud the glass, making it dull and rough.

To fight alone, without practice, for such a job - it's not worth it. Working with such a strong acid requires extreme caution, since you can easily skin or mucous membranes. All operations are carried out in special protective equipment, in a well-ventilated non-residential premises equipped in a suitable manner.

Painted stained-glass window

The technique of painted stained glass is good because it can imitate any other way of making a glass mosaic pattern.

The process of working on it includes several stages:

• Drawing a picture and preparing the glass of the right size.
• The glass is laid on the table on top of the spreading picture of the stained glass window.
• According to the drawing on the glass, a contour is applied with the paint of the selected shade. Normally, the black color is chosen, because it perfectly identifies the elements of the drawing. After the completion of this step, the paint should be allowed to dry well.
• Stained fragments of stained glass are painted with stained-glass paints.

How to create a stained glass painting by yourself using this technique will be shown below in the instruction table. In the meantime, we can say that this is one of the most affordable technologies at home, and it is fashionable to even attract a child to make such a list - it will be very interesting for him. And the costs, in comparison with all other techniques - are minimal.

Contour Pouring Technology

Pouring technique as well as painted can simulate any method of manufacturing stained glass, and with it you can make a picture in a variety of styles. This technology is also great for beginners, who decided to decorate their house with stained glass. In order to reproduce any image on the glass, it is necessary to prepare a drawing and stained-glass paints, which are usually produced in tubes having a special spout - for ease of application and distribution of the composition over the surface.

The first thing to do is to transfer the outline of the pattern to the glass, by drawing it around. Before carrying out the following work, it is necessary to wait until the paint of the contour is completely dry.

After that, the space inside the contour is filled with the paint of the desired color. If necessary, it is distributed with a brush. The paint is poured thick enough in 1 ÷ 1,5 mm, an equal layer, and as it dries it should give a smooth surface without art smears. If you need to give the volume to the individual fragments of the stained-glass window using color, you must prepare beforehand the paint of different shades, which is poured on the glass, according to the pattern.

It should be noted that there are other techniques for manufacturing stained glass. Many of them include two or even more basic technology techniques, so they can be safely called combined. For example, in order to simplify the painting or jelting method, a color film is used instead of inks. That is, in the beginning, a film is glued to the glass on the glass, between the fragments of which a gap of 3 ÷ 5 mm is left. Then this gap is filled with black stained-glass paint, which creates the edging of individual fragments of the general mosaic.

Stained-glass window styles

Stained-glass windows can be made in different styles, but choosing a picture according to this criterion, one should, of course, rely on the decoration of the entire interior to create a harmonious combination of all elements.

Stained-glass windows can have many subspecies, and because of this, sometimes it is even difficult to determine the most correct classification of a drawing. In this case, it is recommended to rely on image features, color gamut and canonical characteristics.

Antique style

At the heart of the antique style is the ancient Greek and Roman beginning. The uniqueness and harmony of the elements of these directions have not lost their popularity in our time, and, in addition, many details of later styles were borrowed from the antique one.

Stained-glass windows made in this style usually consist of numerous fragments, and can be made in any of the above techniques. If the decision is taken to follow a certain direction, an important condition is the observance of the characteristic features inherent in this particular style:

• The figure should resemble an antique mosaic containing Greek ornamental elements - these are drawings of amphorae, nymphs, columns, landscapes with architectural structures,buildings of the time - colonnades, porticos, triangular pediments, etc.
• Quite often in the manufacture of stained glass in this style, mixed techniques are used, not only using glass fragments, but also films, ceramics, metal and mother-of-pearl.
• Antique motifs are used in stained-glass windows installed in the form of false windows in the bathroom, when decorating windows of interior doors, and, of course, for window openings with natural illumination.

Ancient Egyptian style of

This interior and stained glass style has never gone out of fashion, since it was brought to the European culture by Napoleon after his trip to Egypt. Stained glass in the ancient Egyptian style since that time has not undergone any special changes, preserving the geometry of the picture and warm colors.

Indian style

This trend appeared in the 1920s, and it was especially popular right up to the 60s. Today, the art deco style is also often used in the design of modern apartments and houses.

• Drawings of this stained-glass style are distinguished by the symmetry of the arrangement of the elements, the clarity of the lines and the pure colors perfectly matched to each other, as well as a repeating pattern.
• The art deco style is performed in any of the above techniques, since the pattern usually consists of large fragments that can be cut from glass or film, and also etched with a special acid or filled with paint.

Stained glass in abstract style

Abstract art, as a recognized style, appeared in 1910, after the watercolors of French artists presented at the exhibition. Over time, he entered the European fashion, and it was used to make various elements for decorating the interior, including stained glass.

Abstract style can be chosen for various interior solutions, as several lines of stained glass art merged in it.

• Abstractionism is distinguished by the numerous correct and irregular in form fragments, brightness and juiciness of colors that give expression to the whole room where the art panel is located.
• The stained-glass window in the abstract style is executed in the technique of painting, "fusing", film and pouring.

Having chosen a suitable technique for execution, a stained-glass window of this style can be produced on its own - there are simply no limits to fantasy here.

Children's stained glass window

The most interesting and touching one is the children's stained glass style. The variety of themes and motifs of children's motives gives a lot of scope for the imagination of parents, and it is quite possible to attract children to the process of sketch preparation. Most often on these stained-glass windows are depicted the heroes of favorite fairytales and cartoons, as well as stylized animals.

• Children's stained glass should be clearly shaped so that the child can immediately see what's on it. You need to think through the drawing so that it consisted of smooth lines that can make the picture soft and calm, but at the same time bright, attracting attention.
• The stained-glass window can be placed on a clock or built-in mirror in the cabinet, but do not do it on the window, especially if the apartment is located above the ground floor. The window is a zone of increased danger, and the child will even unconsciously drag on to a beautiful bright image.

• In addition, for security reasons, you need to think carefully about the technique of painting. It should not consist of separate fragments of glass, even if they are very well fastened together. Sharp relief protrusions should be completely excluded.

The picture should not be boring and uninteresting. For children's stained-glass windows, film, jellied and painted technique is good, and even better, if the picture is applied to a safety synthetic glass.

Manufacture of stained glass by yourself

	Most often, the picture for stained glass in this technique is printed on the printer, using the already mentioned graphic applications. So you can get accurate and clear lines and shapes of all, even the smallest fragments. If the work is done for the first time, do not take too complex a picture with intricate elements. Drawing lines should have a width of about 4 ÷ 4.5 mm.
	Having printed the drawing on the sheets, they are carefully glued together. All lines must perfectly match, as this depends on the aesthetics of the final result.
	The next step, prepared by the size of the glass, must be thoroughly cleaned of dust and dirt, degrease from the side to which it will be superimposed on the drawing. Then, the glass is wiped dry.
	Dry glass is placed on the sheet with a drawing. It is important to immediately achieve the necessary evenness of stacking relative to the graphic drawing, so that the work does not go with a skew about the canvas. It is desirable to ensure a reliable fixation of the glass, so that there is no accidental shift when performing further operations. It is recommended to use small pieces of fine double-sided adhesive tape( shown by arrows) for this purpose, placing them in places where they will not interfere with the stained glass pattern.
	For work it is necessary to prepare such special tools as a roller, a squeegee with a felt pad, a narrow knife with detachable blades, a clip, scissors, metal rulers of different lengths. The materials will require a stained-glass self-adhesive film of different colors and a special lead-in self-adhesive stained-glass strip of the appropriate shade.
	The glass laid on the picture should once again be well degreased and on the outside, with alcohol solution, and then wipe dry with a clean microfiber, which is guaranteed not to leave small fibers on the surface.
	Next, work begins with the film. Specialists recommend using high quality English film "RegaLead" for mounting, but it is several times more expensive than the products of other companies. Inexpensive films can be unstable to ultraviolet rays, so they can very quickly burn out if the stained-glass window is on the sunny side.
	The film is cut for each element separately by its size. Here, of course, the best option will be to organize the lighting of the desktop from the bottom. If there is no such possibility, then you have to measure each fragment with a ruler and adjust it in place.
	The film is measured and cut out a little larger than the image fragment, and its edges are corrected after gluing.
	Before gluing each piece, the place where it will be applied is thoroughly wiped( degreased) and dried with a microfiber cloth.
	Further, if the fragment is a strip, then from the cut piece of film, from one edge of it, the substrate is started to be removed. The edge of the details is fixed on the glass, smoothing with a squeegee with a felt attachment. The other edge of the fragment is stretched, which makes it possible to arrange it exactly along the lines of the drawing.
	Then, with a clear and rapid movement, the film strip is pressed against the glass by the squeegee. This operation must be carried out quickly so that even the slightest dust does not reach the surface of the glass, otherwise the neatness effect can be irretrievably lost. The excess of the film along the edges of the glass is cut with a sharp knife. The glue on the back of the film grasps almost immediately, but not in full force, so there is an opportunity to correct irregularities if they are accidentally created.
	This photo shows well two parallel strips glued to the glass. One of them is already straight, on the ruler, cut off, and the second has just been glued, and its edges have not yet been processed.
	The film should be found on a black strip by 1.5 ÷ 2 mm. The long ruler fits exactly along this line, it is carried by a sharp knife, and the excess part of the film is carefully removed. Later in the course of work, the black lines of the drawing will be covered with lead tape, which is pasted on the last.
	In the event that a dust particle has fallen into the film, it must be removed. To do this, the edge of the fragment is gently lifted, unglazed from the glass, and carefully, with the tip of the knife, not to damage the material, remove a speck of dust. It is strictly forbidden to perform this operation with fingers, as the prints from them will always remain on the adhesive layer of the film, and will be clearly visible on the lumen. After removing the dust, the film is stretched again and pressed with a squeegee.

	Next, the work continues on the same principle. If the pattern element has a curvilinear configuration, its adjustment is carried out in situ.
	For this purpose, a fragment of a film of a larger size is cut out, and after it is glued, excess sections are cut off accurately over the black lines of the pattern. Here, of course, very important is the "hand tightness", so that the manipulation of the knife has been carefully verified, and the edges turned out to be smooth, exactly according to the embedded template.
	If there are several small fragments of different colors in the adjacent drawing, then there are two ways to do it. In the first case, the entire multi-colored area is covered with a film of the same color, and then the superfluous fragments are cut out. So you can essentially win at the speed of making stained glass, but lose in the expense of the material.
	You can do it in a different, more professional way, when each piece of the picture is covered with a separate piece of film and cut out separately. Here material savings are achieved, but the work, especially in the absence of experience, will take longer, and besides, there is a high probability of making a mistake. Therefore, if a second method of operation is selected, fragments of a slightly larger film are glued to individual elements.
	Cuttings are also produced on the black lines of the pattern pattern. In no case should we allow overlapping of films of adjacent fragments to remain, since the material has the property of expanding with increasing temperature, and in the absence of a gap between individual elements of the mosaic pattern, deformation may appear on the surface. And over time, the film will at all begin to flake off the glass. Therefore, between the fragments should remain a gap of 1.5 ÷ 2 mm.
	The remaining parts of the picture are cut and fixed on the glass by the same method.
	In the illustration, you can clearly see how the elements with complex shapes are pasted.
	When the film is filled with all the color fragments, go to the gluing of the lead tape. This material for framing can be of different colors - a ribbon for gold, silver, copper with various intermediate shades is produced. The lead tape can be matte or glossy, it is plastic, because it is 98 ÷ 99% pure lead, so it can easily take any desired shape, and it is very comfortable to work with. The lower part of this stained glass is also covered with a special adhesive compound, which has excellent adhesion to the glass.
	Each piece of stained glass is framed by a ribbon. When several ribbon lines are joined at the same point, the edges must be closed, that is, if the incisions reach the edge of the entire composition, they overlap the edge that surrounds the entire edge. In the middle of the picture, the edges of the tape should also overlap each other. After gluing the tape carefully rolls on top of the roller.
	Straight lines of stained glass, framed with lead tape, must be aligned with a ruler and squeegee - this process should be done immediately, until the glue is still dry.
	An easy way to straighten straight lines makes it perfectly smooth. For this purpose, a ruler is applied to the strip of the glued tape, it is installed exactly according to the template, and then between the ruler and the tape is carried out by an angle or the edge of the squeegee, which finally sets the tape to the specified position.
	As already mentioned above, each of the edges of the tape should overlap with the next glued segment. For example, if a rounded area with fragments is pasted, then a whole piece is taken and, after laying out the circle, one edge of the tape is superimposed on the other, and then rolled with a roller. The trimmed edges must be closed so that during the harvesting process, it is not accidental to touch or unlock any of them. Therefore, it is recommended to carefully consider in advance which of the fragments, where and when to paste. It is necessary to try to plan the order of gluing so that in the end of the work, there is only one open edge of the tape.
	After that, the entire tape is pasted with a roller.
	Next, using a special clamp, which is usually included in the kit for creating stained glass, you need to walk through all the joints, pressing the stripes of tape together. This is done to avoid the formation of cracks followed by the ingress of moisture or detergents into them during operation.
	The tape is pressed on both sides of the joint, which, by the way, gives the overall composition the naturalness of the real stained glass - the visual effect of the "forged joint" is obtained. Complete sealing of joints and overlaps will ensure the longest possible service of the created stained glass.

For these dimensions, you need to pick up a ready-made drawing, or, with sufficient experience, perform it yourself. If the finished drawing is taken from the Internet, then it is printed on ordinary sheets of A-4 format in any graphic editor, using the function of multi-page printing( for this purpose, the Publisher application included in the MS Office package is great, for example). Then the fragments are joined and glued along the lines with the help of an adhesive tape to reconstruct a single pattern.
	In this case, the drawing is done by hand. It is important to ensure that each of its details is well-selected, the boundaries are drawn.

The applied contour must completely dry out, otherwise all the work done can be ruined by accidentally blurring the paint when performing further operations.
	After drying the borders go to painting the finished drawing. This process can be compared with a children's coloring book, where each of the elements should acquire its own color. This stage of stained glass manufacturing needs to be approached creatively, but with the utmost care. This toning is usually applied with thin brushes - the applied and dried borders will not allow the paints to spread.
	Colors should be as clean as possible, bright, necessarily in harmony among themselves. If you intend to give the drawing a special picturesqueness, then the darker or lightest shades are best applied later, after the drying of the basic, basic colors. Otherwise, the dirt may turn out, and all the work will go wrong.
	The finished stained-glass window should look aesthetically pleasing and neat, as well as well harmonized with the interior style. The glass thus decorated can be gently inserted into the frame, for example, of the interior door, or used to decorate the furniture doors.
