With the arrival of summer, many urban residents are eager to get out into the countryside at least for the weekend, and if there is a summer residence and circumstances permit, then for the whole summer. No, probably, a person who does not like to take a nap in the fresh air for the singing of birds, swaying in a hammock or chair. To save on buying this simple, but rather expensive furniture element of the interior, the hanging chair with your own hands can be done in several ways, which will be considered further.

Some of the options are made using the simplest materials, which even, perhaps, simply litter the shed. For others, you will have to procure the material in nature or purchase it in the store. Manufacturing may require the "mobilization" of its abilities in needlework - weaving or knitting, so that there is work not only for men, but sometimes even more - for housewives.

Production of simple armchairs

This section of the article will consider several options for manufacturing hanging chairs, which should be quite feasible for most skillful owners.

Suspension chairs from hoop

The simplest way to make a hanging chair at home from a regular hula-hoop, which can be found in almost every home or purchased in a sports store. Moreover, there are two variants of manufacturing such an object of garden furniture. In one of them one hoop will be required, in the other two, slightly different from each other in size. Both options will be shown - you can choose one that seems easier to manufacture.

The first version of the

This chair will require only the

  • sewing skills. The following materials are required for the manufacture of this chair:

- one hoop from the pipe 20 ÷ 30 mm in cross-section, diameter from 700 to 1100 mm, depending on how largearmchair;

- two identical pieces of fabric measuring 1200 × 1200 mm or 1600 × 1600 mm. Choose a strong fabric, you can take the lining material on the sintepon, already having a stitching;

- a cut of the same fabric with a width of 200 mm, length of 3500 ÷ 4000 mm( can be several pieces);

- colored thick fabric for sewing pillow cases for two ÷ three pillows;

- sintepon, also having a width of 200 mm, and length of about 3500 ÷ 4000 mm( can be several pieces);

- sintepon for stuffing pillows;

- border for processing cut-outs in the case - 800 ÷ 1000 mm;

- a lightning bolt with a length of 700 ÷ 1100 mm;

- strong kapron cord with a thickness of 6 ÷ 8 mm or a linen rope with a diameter of 10 ÷ 12 mm, length of 10500 mm( 10.5 m);

- two powerful metal carbines and rings for hanging the chair.

  • Tools:

- threads and needles for manual sewing;

- sewing machine;

- scissors;

- marker;

- a tape measure or a centimeter.

  • The process of manufacturing such an armchair is step by step presented in the table:
Illustration Brief description of the operation
pc1 The first step is spreading the cloth on the table, and then wrapping it around the center with a hoop.
pc2 Next, using a centimeter around the hoop is measured and marked with a circle marker, with a radius of 250 mm more.
pc3 A circle is cut out of the planned line from the fabric.
Such details need to be prepared 2 pieces.
pc4 Finished elements of the future cover should look like this.
pk5 Next step, one of the cut round blanks is folded in half, and then cut.
pc6 Further, a zipper is pinned along the line of the central cut of the circle, and then zipped.
250 mm from the edge of the cut, and from this point the lock is fastened, that is, it must be clearly along the length equal to the diameter of the hoop.
pk7 After the lock is attached, two halves of the cover are sewn along the circumference, and then it is turned and unfolded on the table.
pc8 Next, in order to make it convenient to make the markings for the cutouts, the finished cover should be put on the hoop.
The markup shown in the presented drawing is produced.
The places where cutouts are to be made are marked with a marker.
pk9 On the made marks are made four cutouts, through which cords or ropes will be fixed to the hoop.
pk10 To ensure that the cut holes look neat, they need to be sewn with braid.
Having finished the work on the case, you can proceed with the preparation of the hoop.
pk11 The wrap is wrapped in a sintepon.
In several places, the metal can be slightly greased with polymer glue, so that the wrapped material does not slip during its piercing.
Next, the actual plating process itself goes.
It is carried out by hand, with stitches over the edge.
pk12 The next step is to cover the wrapped fabric with a cloth.
Well, in order that it does not slip, first its edges are wrapped inwards and punctured.
pk13 The fabric is also sewn by hand, over the edge.
As you sew, fixing pins are pulled out.
pk14 The sewn hoop is inserted into the cover through a hole in which a zipper is sewn, which is then fastened.
pk15 Next, two pieces of 2200 mm are cut from the cord and two pieces of 2800 mm each.
pc16 Then, the cords are folded in half and their ends are connected together.
After that, they are threaded into the cut-out holes, under the hoop.
pk17 The fastening of the cords for the hoop is carried out by threading, connected by a knot of ends to the loop formed on the other side of them.
pk18 In the last turn, the cushions are cut and sewn to fit, and the chair is suspended in the place chosen for it.
How to make the process of securing the chair on the ceiling or in the yard - will be discussed below.
The second version of
The second option - two hoops in lace braiding

The second option - two hoops in the lace braid

In the second variant, several other materials are used in the manufacture of the overhead chair, unlike the first model. Such chairs are made, as well as hammocks in the technique of macrame, but can be made in another way, accessible to everyone, since not everyone knows the art of weaving.

  • So, for the manufacture of this chair it is necessary to prepare:

- two metal hoops( ready-made or manufactured independently, for example, from metal-plastic pipes) section of 30 ÷ 35 mm, diameter of 700 mm for making the carcass of the seat, and 1100 mm - for a bypassbackrests;

- in this case a nylon cord for braiding is used, 4 mm thick and it will require 900 m, but instead, a flax or jute cord with a diameter of 5 ÷ 6 mm or strips of dense leather can be used;

- nylon cord section of 6 ÷ 7 mm for hanging the chair - 12 m;

- 2 wooden bars with a cross section of 20 × 35 mm, or 2 metal tubes with a diameter of 20 ÷ 25 mm. Instead, you can use two pieces of rope with a cross section of 10 ÷ 12 mm.

The manufacturing process for this version of the chair includes the following operations:

Illustration Brief description of the operation
kw1 The first step is to wrap both hoops with a cord. After every 20 turns, tightening is done so that the loops do not slip.
Sometimes a small amount of polymer glue is used to fasten the rope on the metal, which, of course, should not protrude outward.
The cord must be laid very tightly, otherwise the finished product will look messy.
kw2 The next step is to wrap the hoop, which will serve as a seat.
For this, a "chessboard" pattern consisting of various nodes can be used.
ksh3 This illustration shows a variant of a braid "chessboard" made of flat knots diagonally.
ksh4 In this photo shows the same picture, but in the direct version.
ksh5 To those house craftsmen, who are difficult to master the art of macrame, or just want to work on the braiding of the hoop quickly, you can recommend using the technique that is used for weaving mats. But, if you finish the rug, it is removed from the hoop, then in the manufacture of the chair the resulting weaving remains on the round frame.
To make the weaving strong, for the base that is fixed to the hoop, you need to choose quality cords.
ksh6 The next step is to pair the two prepared hoops with each other using a cord, tightly wrapping it in the front of the future chair.
kw7 For stiffness of the backrest, two supports are made of bars, tubes or a thick cord, which are tightly braided with a thin cord.
These two jumpers( in the illustration above they are shown in green lines) are fixed to the hoop of the backrest and seat by braiding.
ksh8 Next, you need to do the weave on the back of the chair - in the remaining space between the two hoops.
The braid can also be produced with the technique of macrame, the technique of making rugs, or the simplest crochet - as will be more convenient.
ksh9 Here it should be noted that the installation and braiding of the supports of the back of the chair can be done both before weaving the back, and after it.
cx10 Slings for hanging the chair are better, too, braid the cord - so they will be much stronger and more reliable.
The slings are fastened to the hoop of the backrest in four places, but their length is adjusted to the desired size already when the chair is suspended in the chosen place.

It should be clarified that plastic( polyethylene) pipes for water supply can be used instead of hula-hoop for making armchairs - they are light in weight and have sufficient strength. The advantage of this material is also that the braid will look on a pipe of a larger diameter much more advantageous and aesthetic. In addition, the plastic is warmer and softer than the metal. Pipes are sold in construction markets in the form of bays and already have a suitable shape, so you only need to select the correct diameter of the ring and properly attach it.

The hoop can be made of polyethylene or metal-plastic water pipes

The hoop can be made from polyethylene or metal plastic water pipes

. The frame and metal-plastic water pipes will be suitable for creating hoop wraps. They are somewhat more expensive, but also more durable, since their walls consist of several layers. Metal-plastic pipes, just like plastic ones, are easy to cut off with a hacksaw.

The length of the length of the pipe required for the hoop is determined by the formula of the circumference length:

L = π × D ≈ 3,14 × D

- where D is the required hoop diameter,

- S is the required pipe length.

For example, if you want to make a hoop with a diameter of 1100 mm, then this will require 3.14 × 1100 = 3454 mm, or rounding off 3.5 meters of pipe.

You do not need to buy rigid polypropylene pipes, because when bending they can behave quite unexpectedly.

Hose connection in hoop

Pipe connection in hoop

Pipe ends are joined together by means of a special insert of smaller diameter than the pipe, but tightly entering it. This insert is usually made of wood or dense plastic. It is inserted into the ends of the pipe, then tightly moved and fixed with stainless screws of 15 to 20 mm in length, depending on the diameter of the pipe. This circumstance is important to take into account so that the screws do not pass through.

Braided hanging chair

The task of increased complexity is a wicker chair

The task of increased complexity - wicker chair

The traditional option is hanging braided chairs that can be made from specially prepared flexible willow, bird cherry, rakit, rattan or bast. In the central part of Russia, it is easiest to find a broom or willow that grows densely along the banks of rivers.

Weaving material - long and flexible willow rods

Weaving material - long and flexible willow rods

In order to make a wicker chair, it is necessary to purchase and prepare the following materials:

  • Long willows with a diameter of 10-15 mm - they will require about 400 ÷ 450 pieces. Better, of course, to use rattan, especially for those who first try themselves in the art of spinning, since it is more flexible and easier to work with.
  • For the front of the chair, a metal hoop, metal-plastic pipes can be used as a frame, or the base can be made from several twigs of twigs woven with a braid.
  • Durable twine and glue will be required for the frame binding.
  • A pruner, an awl, a knife and a ruler are needed for measuring the material and cutting it.
  • A cord with a cross section of 4 mm made of nylon in color, close to the shade of the rods - it will be needed for weaving the back. If there are skills in the weaving, then the back is made from the vine.
  • Cords, chains or ropes for hanging chairs. Their length will depend on the ceiling height of the room or other suspension point.

The pattern of weaving can be different, and its complexity depends on the experience in this art.

The easiest way to make a hanging cocoon chair is to perform the following operations:

  • The chopped vine is stripped and peeled off, and then braced to make it more pliable in the weave.
  • For the beginning the frame of the chair is formed. If a hoop is used for the front part, and an oval shape is planned in the form of a cocoon, then the hoop will have to be slightly flattened. However, it is best for this frame element to use a metal-plastic pipe, which can easily be shaped and connected to its ends using an insert.
  • Then, the rest of the frame elements are fixed to the pipe. The rods must have a thickness in the section of at least 6 ÷ 8 mm, and the length is greater than the height of the chair by 250 ÷ 400 mm if they are fixed vertically. If, however, this length was not found, then the frame can be made of horizontally fixed elements.
  • Mounting the rods vertically, they are fixed on the top of the frame, in its middle, so that they gradually move apart, and in the middle of the back of the chair the distance between them should be 20 ÷ 25 mm.
  • The rods are bent, creating the shape and depth of the chair, and at the bottom are again assembled to the middle. So it turns out a kind of basket-frame, which will be in a finished form in a vertical position.
  • There is another way of forming the base when the horizontal bars are fixed on the sides of the frame. They are also mounted every 20 ÷ 25 mm, and the shape of the future chair is also created from them.
  • The fastening of the frame vault on the base takes place by bending it through the pipe from inside the chair to the outside. Then the bent end is intercepted with a twine by string.
  • Next, wire rods braid crosswise with a thinner vine, starting from the bottom and gradually rising up. If weaving goes on a horizontally arranged frame, then it begins necessarily from the middle of the back to the sides. On the pipe, the end of the rod bends and twists around the main vine. Each rod is closely pressed against the previous one.
An example of sealing vines when weaving along vertically installed elements of the frame.

Example of compaction of vine laying when weaving along vertically installed elements of the frame.

  • The whole basket of armchair flies in the same order. The end of the last rod is bent, refueled and fixed in a weave.

As in such an armchair in the seat area there is no reliable support due to the oval shape, then as a pillow made of foam rubber, having a sufficient thickness, is inserted into it in the lower part - this can be tried on the spot.

Suspension chair from the board

Another variety of hanging chairs can be made of boards, in several versions. The installation of such a structure is quite simple, even for those owners who do not have skills in carpentry. It is enough to be able to accurately handle the surface of the boards and drill even holes in them.

The first version of the
Absolutely not difficult in manufacturing chair from boards

Completely easy to manufacture chair from the boards

This option is ideal for a suburban area - this chair is easy to hang in the shade of trees, where it will be very pleasant to relax in the fresh air.

  • For the manufacture of such a structure it is necessary to have the following materials at hand:

- Boards, the size: length 600 ÷ 700 mm, width 120 ÷ 150 mm, thickness 10 ÷ 15 mm. These items will need 16 pieces. The boards should be well processed, it is desirable to round them on the ribs. Some masters use boards from standard euro pallets.

A simple set of materials for the manufacture of a hanging chair

A simple set of materials for the manufacture of a hanging chair

- Nylon cord-paracord - 10 m.

- Water-based lacquer for street work.

  • The following tools will be needed for work:

- Hacksaw or jigsaw.

- Drill and drill bits for wood with diameters of 6, 8 and 10 mm.

- Sandpaper.

Work on the manufacture of this chair is carried out as follows:

Illustration Brief description of the operation
id1 If the chair is to be made from the pallet boards, it will need to be carefully disassembled, not allowing the appearance or expansion of cracks.
Then, also very carefully, nails are pulled out of the boards.
After this, the edges of the boards with holes from the nails are cut straight.
All surfaces must be carefully processed to an ideal smoothness, otherwise it is easy to get a splinter, and in the most uncomfortable place.
id2 The processed boards are marked, folded in two or three pieces, and through holes are drilled at a distance of 50 mm from each other.
Here it should be noted that the holes can be drilled along the edge, with an indent from it 15 ÷ 20 mm, or in the middle of the board in two rows, at a distance of 30 mm from each other.
id3 Next, the boards are stacked side by side, and the cord is inserted into the holes, in this way, as shown in the illustrated illustration.
id4 The next step is to pull the cord through the holes on the previous connections.
At assembly it is necessary to remember that it is not necessary to tighten the cord too much, since the boards should be sufficiently free in relation to each other. This is necessary in order that the resulting design could take the form of an armchair.
After the cord is pulled, it is tied with a double knot on the back of the structure.
id5 Further, in the upper board and in the second board from the bottom, with an indent from the edge of 35 ÷ 40 mm, in the middle of the board from two sides of it, two symmetrical holes with a center are drilled.
They are required for pulling the cords of the desired length, for which the chair will be suspended.
id6 To ensure that the cords do not converge pyramidal to the top, but were stretched to the desired distance, they should be fixed at the top, just below the hanging point of the structure, with a wooden frame.
After passing through the frame, all the cords are connected and weave into one rope.
id7 As a result, you get a comfortable chair, which for comfort can additionally be equipped with foam mattress or pillow.
The second variant of the

The second variant of the wooden chair is made even easier than the first one, but it is more suitable for giving as a child's swing. However, taking the proposed design as a basis and reinforcing it, it is possible to make even a suspended sofa on this principle.

Wooden swing chair

Wooden chair-swing

In order to make this chair, you will need:

- 14 well-treated boards with a length of 500 ÷ 700 mm, a width of 50 ÷ 60 mm, a thickness of 15 ÷ 20 mm.

- Kapron cord 10 mm in diameter, 10 m long.

- Self-tapping screws with wide hats( press washers) 10 mm long.

Of the tools you will need, in principle, only a screwdriver, if the lumber is pre-treated and covered with protective compounds.

  • The first step of the board is laid out exactly parallel to each other, face down, between them a distance of approximately 10 mm is maintained.
  • Next, you need to determine what length of cord is required on each side - this is done by fitting.
  • Between the stacked boards, at a distance of 40 ÷ 50 mm from the edge of the snake, a cord is laid, and then in the same way it is laid in the opposite direction. Thus, each of their details on both sides should be "dressed" with cords. Cords twist among themselves in the spaces between the boards, pulling so that the distance between the bars is about 8 ÷ 10 mm.
  • When the cord is completely intertwined on one side of the chair, on the bottom board, on the underside of the chair, both ends of the cord are combined and securely pressed with a self-tapping screw with a wide bonnet.

After this, all the same is done on the other side of the chair.

  • Now, on each bar, on its two sides, on the back of the chair, the installed cords are fixed by screwing the screws.
  • Everything, the chair is ready, and it remains only to fix the lines, and hang it in the chosen place.

How to hang an

Any chair must be guaranteedly suspended

chair Any armchair must be guaranteed to be safely suspended

The above suspended armchairs can be secured indoors or outdoors. If you decide to hang the finished chair to the ceiling, then you need to carefully prepare for this place. The ceiling must be strong enough to be surely secured in it with a load of at least 120 kg.

Suspension to the concrete flow on the anchor

Suspension to the concrete flow on the anchor

  • If the ceiling is concrete, without voids, then problems with mounting the fastener, as a rule, do not arise. It is enough to drill a hole for a powerful anchor with a hook, and then fix the suspension.
Special kit for suspended structures

Special kit for suspended structures

In the range of hardware stores you can even find a special kit designed for this application - an anchor, a hook, a metal chain.

  • If the ceiling slabs have voids, then an opening is made in the place necessary for hanging the chair, through which the cavity is filled with a special solution. These mixtures are called chemical anchors, and they are made on the basis of high-strength polymers. Such compounds are usually sold in special packs( tubes), for building syringes.
Специальный композитный полимерный состав - "химический анкер"

Special composite polymer composition - "chemical anchor"

When the hole in the ceiling is filled, the metal anchor itself with a hook or ring is assembled into it and then left for at least two days until the polymerization and solidification of the solution is complete. Only after this, you can hang a chair on the mount.

  • If the ceiling has guaranteed reliable, strong beams overlap, then they are bolted mounts specially designed for hanging the chair.
Assembly with four bolts or anchors

Fastening system with four bolts or anchors

  • If the ceiling is covered with a suspended structure, another mounting option is used to suspend the chair, having a connecting section of the required length, ending with a threaded coupling. This bracket is fixed in a concrete ceiling and exits through the surface of the suspended ceiling, and then a ring or hook, usually having a decorative cuff, is screwed into it. Further, the chair can already be suspended from the chair.
Installation of a special fixation with a false ceiling

Installing a special fastening with a suspended ceiling

  • You do not have to come up with your own mounting structure, since it can simply not withstand a heavy load. It is recommended to purchase a special ceiling mount, made of high-strength metal alloys, and designed for the appropriate load.
Slings from woven jute or linen rope

Slings from braided jute or linen ropes

  • Slings for hanging chairs can be chains, cords, ropes, ready-made or woven from durable fabrics. It is desirable that the ropes correspond to the chosen style solution, harmonized both with the chair itself and with the general interior of the room.

Other interesting variants of the

hanging chairs. There are other versions of hanging chairs that can be made at home. Perhaps one of these designs will seem simpler or more interesting to someone.

  • This model of the swing chair can be made not only by those who own the technique of weaving macrame. Quite well, and those who have the simplest sewing skills, as the back and seat are weaving, knitting or sewing.
Openwork braiding can be replaced with a regular cloth

Openwork braiding can be replaced with a normal cloth

For manufacturing, slings and four wooden or plastic parts are required. Of the wooden elements, a unique frame is fastened, which will become the frame for the seat and back, and the slings for hanging the chair to the ceiling are also attached to it.

This chair is quite comfortable for adults, but most likely it is not suitable for young children, as it is not safe enough.

Pendant chair made of metal rings

Suspension chair made of metal rings

  • This version of the chair can be manufactured by those who own a welding craft, as the frame for such a construction is made of steel reinforcement and a metal sheet. The seat of the chair is made of plywood, on which is laid and fixed foam, and then sheathed with imitation leather or leather.
Frameless armchair - only fabric, foam rubber and strong cords

Frameless armchair - only fabric, foam rubber and strong cords

  • This swing chair requires a thick fabric, foam rubber, which will give the seat and back a shape, a kapron cord and a wooden spacer for the lines. To make such an armchair, you only need a sewing machine, a centimeter, scissors and the ability to work with these tools.
Complex bent wood parts can be replaced by metal-plastic pipes

Complex in the manufacture of bent wooden parts can be replaced with plastic pipes

  • Another interesting version of this is not exactly the usual piece of furniture. The most difficult element in this design is the frame part of the back. In this case, it is made of bent wood, but it can be replaced, for example, with two metal-plastic pipes. They are fastened together by a building tape, and then, they are made out of a capron cord, or they are first lined with a synthepon, then with a dense cloth or imitation leather. Slings are also made from a rope or cord, and the seat and back are cut out of strong fabric and fixed to the frame back in four places, where the lines are fixed.

From the examples considered in the article it is clear that it is not such an impossible task to make a hanging chair yourself, it is feasible for any diligent person. Therefore, you can choose the option that is most harmonious for a particular interior and is most suitable for the complexity of work and the level of your own skill, and then boldly get to work.
