Should I buy a quick-action chuck for a drill?
The camshaft chuck for the drill can be safely considered more reliable, but do not forget about the drawbacks that are inherent in this type of equipment. First, it is rather inconvenient to constantly use a special key in order to hold or release a drill bit. Secondly, this key is constantly lost, which makes it difficult to carry out the work.
Important! Prolonged use of the clamping wrench leads to its wear, which makes further use of the drill impossible.
The quick-clamping mini-chuck for the drill does not have such drawbacks. The main difference of this element is that instead of a clamping wrench, the outer shell of the cartridge is used, with which the lips of the drill are clamped. But even such devices have their drawbacks, especially in cases where their cost is rather low. The most frequent problems of this type of device are:
- Low-quality drill bit;
- Dust resistance;
- Clamping mechanism failure.
But, as already mentioned, such problems are inherent in cheaper variants of the device.
Narrowed cartridges and their repair
The special tool for electric or hand drills is a collet chuck for a drill. Such a cartridge is attached to the shaft of the tool itself, and such equipment is intended for more accurate drilling operations. Collet chucks are capable of clamping a drill, whose diameter is 0.1 mm.
Important! The use of such a tool requires lower working speeds of the drill, so as not to overheat and break small drills.
Repair of the drill chuck is possible only in cases where its design provides for this action. Most inexpensive quick-clamping cartridges are made of unstable plastic, which simply excludes the possibility of detailed repair work. But there are also such tools that are amenable to disassembly and replacement of individual components.
Most often, the cams are repaired, where the clamping lips or teeth are worn. Collet types of cartridges are usually made by a solid piece, which is clamped by means of a threaded joint and a special small key.
Clamping mechanism as a hint in repair work
For any type of repair work, it is necessary to know the device of the element to be repaired. The device of the drill chuck is quite simple. Such an element consists of three components:
- Grabbing lips, having a conical shape;
- The inner shell of the cartridge, in which the lips are;
- The outer shell of the device, which clamps the drill bit.
Each individual element of the device can be replaced, if the device itself is able to repair. As a rule, high-quality and expensive items can be replaced without much effort. To do this, it is enough to disassemble the tool and replace the part that was worn out or just out of order.
Important! When replacing a certain element of the existing mechanism, it is necessary to use only similar spare parts that will not wear out other elements of the device. With proper and careful use, the quick-action clamping devices can last considerably longer than cams or collets, which makes them so popular.
