Vane with your own hands: photo, drawings, instructions

Materials for weather vane

Traditionally, the turntable is made of steel or copper. Rarely you can find quite expensive and difficult to manufacture forged weathercocks. Almost do not do because of impracticality weathercocks from experimental materials( in the course are plywood, bottles and much more) - this option is undesirable, although it also has a place to be.

Drawing weathervane

Before designing your unique design and proceeding with the design of the weather vane by yourself, familiarize yourself with the necessary components of this meteorological device:

  • body, represented by a 13-centimeter piece of a three-inch tube;
  • axis of a 45-centimeter smooth reinforcement 10 mm thick;
  • cover-plug on the body with a drilled in advance 10 mm hole in the middle;
  • wind rose in the form of four 20-centimeter steel rods 6 mm thick;the bars are attached to the lid at an angle of 90 degrees to each other at such a height that one can easily observe their readings from the ground;letters of the direction of light are attached to the edges of the rods, often Latin letters;
  • flywheel, which is often made of thin copper or stainless steel.

How to make a weathervane yourself: step by step instruction

Creating a working weathervane is not such a difficult task. If you follow the instructions correctly, you will certainly succeed.

  • Step 1. On the body from above, you need to make a thread, and from below place the bearing in it on the size( the inner diameter of the bearing should be 9 mm).
  • Step 2. Axial rods must be pierced on a lathe or manually to a thickness of 9 mm. If you plan to do this manually, carefully check the accuracy of the parameters with a caliper and try on the part by the size of the bearing.
  • Step 3. Weld a wind rose on the body cover, and screw it onto the tube.

    Please note! Considering that the main modern task of the weathervane is decorativeness, try to carry out welding work with jewelry precision.

  • Step 4. The axis is inserted into the pre-drilled hole in the lid;The main goal is to get exactly into the bearing hole and make sure that the axle moves easily. In this case, the axis must be fixed securely inside the bearing.
  • Step 5. Cut out the thin stainless steel cap just wider than the diameter of the body. Weld it over the lid to protect the device from rain.
  • Step 6. Measure the desired length of the axis and cut off the excess.
  • Step 7. The most decorative step: the manufacture of a flywheel. It is she who will determine the decorative appearance of the product. The simplest way is to use the previously developed sketch, although you can develop drawings yourself if you want.
  • Step 8. The flywheel is attached to the axle by welding or neat soldering.

Installation of weather vane on roof

Weathervane on the roof

Before mounting the turntable on the roof of the gazebo or at home, its housing must be filled with lithol( or solidol).Armed with a simple compass, set exactly the wind rose.

Variants of installation of a weather vane a little:

  • it is the easiest to fix a round flange on the edge of the case of a turntable;
  • secure by clamps or flat plates;
  • you can install a weather vane on the cap of the chimney using flat strips.

If there is a need to calculate the approximate force of the wind, then a free-hanging metal plate should be placed on the instrument. By its deviation from the vertical and it will be possible to determine this value.
With the correct development and installation of the weather vane, it will react even to the slightest whiff of the breeze with active torsion.
