Making the bed frame by yourself

It's easier to make a bed frame with your own hands than you might think.

This work is for sure if you are building a small bedroom or want to make a bed for a custom mattress.

Or maybe you want to see in your bedroom a unique piece of furniture, the second copy of which you will not find in any apartment or catalog?

With a little skill in working with woodwork tools, making a bed made of wood will not cause any difficulties, but will save a considerable amount of money, which we usually overpay for the brand, buying ready-made beds in shops, salons, etc.

So, let's get down to business.

Making workpieces

First of all we are determined with a mattress, choose the color we liked in terms of color, orthopedic properties, here it is better to consult experts on the composition,.p, and to start work on the frame we will be interested in the size of the bed.

We also plan the design of the future bed, the height from the floor, the shape and size of the backs.

These values ​​are needed to calculate the number of required materials. Be sure to draw drawings for yourself, indicating all the main dimensions of the finished bed, so as not to bite your elbows afterwards.

When determining the frame size, add 10 mm to each side of the mattress you choose.

Take for example the manufacture of a frame made of wood for a standard double bed for a mattress with a size of 2000x1800 mm of the simplest design, drawings of more complex models you can independently look for on specialized sites.

The bed is used mainly for sleeping and sometimes for a more active rest, so the structure of the frame must be strong and reliable, capable of withstanding certain loads, therefore we use dry wood -, slats cross-section 20x80 mm, from which we will produce lamellas, a sheet of plywood.

In advance, take care of fasteners( metal corners, screws, confirmations) and a small set of carpentry tools, stains, polyurethane-based varnish, carpentry, putty, upholstery.

Based on the size of the double bed, we need 2 boards with a length of 2070 mm for the side parts and 2 boards with a length of 1820 mm for the end walls.

Making a bed

Making a bed frame consists of two stages - carpentry and carpentry and decoration.

Let's consider each stage a little more.

Carpentry work

The first step is assembling the backbone of the frame - a rectangular box of calibrated boards. On the floor lay a rectangle, carefully measuring the angles between the sides, not allowing distortions.

Use a construction square to align all angles by 90 °.

You can use metal corners for self-tapping screws or confirmations for screed construction, and for gluing the joints it is necessary to glue with joinery glue.

The picture shows how to drill holes correctly for confirmations.

Please note that the self-tapping screws and confirmats should be slightly drowned in the wood, and all the places of the spills of the wooden elements should be immediately processed from the burrs.

The holes "in the plane" should be slightly larger than the holes "in the butt", it is permissible to use the fasteners and both of the above methods.

The size of the screws is chosen in such a way that it does not exceed the total thickness of the bonded materials, otherwise the tip of the fastener will come out when screwed and may cause injury or damage the upholstery or mattress.

If your bed is a real king's bed and has dimensions even more chosen by us, then for reliability it will be advisable to make another central partition, this is the option you can see in the photo.

Next, we use rails of 20x80 mm, cutting them along the length of the frame.

Reiki screwed with screws from the inside to the sidewalls, aligning the bottom edge of the frame, these slats will be attached lamellas.

As slats, we can use these same slats, only already sawn across the width of the bed. The lamellas are fastened to the support bars, as demonstrated in the photo, with a step of not more than 150 mm.

If the wooden slats are in short supply, then the lamellae can be made from plywood with a thickness of 20 mm or more, in this case the installation of an additional central support wall will be particularly relevant.

Depending on the design of your bed, the basic carpentry on this can be finished.

If your bed is as simple as possible, spartan style, not burdened with various decorations, then at this stage it is enough to refine the wooden parts, hand-crafted with a fine-grained sandpaper or grinder to avoid splinters, and begin to work with stains and varnish.

Next, to evenly distribute the load during operation, a plywood board is placed on the lamellae, then the mattress chosen by you, and your bed can be used for the intended purpose.

I will suggest a small trick - the slats can be fastened to the base with a greater frequency( 10-40 mm pitch), with such a skeleton structure, a plywood shield will not be needed.

We have considered the production of a couch type ottoman, the finished height of such a bed taking into account the mattress will be approximately 350 mm.

If you like to sleep above the floor, then it's time to start making legs. The legs of the bed are made of a bar 50x50 mm and are attached to the body with the help of confirmatives or screws.

In our example, the bed turns out to be quite solid in size, so you need to fix the legs not only in the corners of the frame, but also in the middle of the sides.

If an additional longitudinal partition has been installed during the installation of the frame, then another foot must be made to support it.

And again we take up the sandpaper or grinder and carefully process the parts from the bar.

Decoration of a bed

In general, the type of bed should match the interior design of your bedroom, so the addition to the main frame can serve as a pillar at the head of the bed, as well as in the foot of the bed.

These elements can be made carved, fantasy shape or in the form of a strictly rectangle, with inserts of a mirror cloth or upholstered with a soft cloth - everything depends on your imagination.

You can make decor elements of various shapes yourself, or order from specialists, or buy ready-made items in specialized stores.

Before final processing, all technical holes, joints of frame elements need to be plastered.

If the highlight of your bed is a kind of natural material, then all elements of wood need to be wiped off with dust with a dry cloth, then soak with stain and cover with 2-3 layers of special lacquer.

Pine boards do not need to be covered with stain, otherwise because of the high tar content the wood will be with the effect of tiger stripes, it will be enough to simply varnish treatment here.

For a reliable effect, apply the varnish in 2-3 layers, carefully letting dry the previous layers.

If the bed is upholstered with soft material, then you need a carpentry stapler, staples, a suitable amount of upholstery fabric.

In this case, a thin layer of foam can be laid under the fabric and pierced with shaped nails.

The upholstery material must match the color scheme of your bedroom.

Upholstery fabric can also be used for internal processing of wood elements, which will protect the mattress from contamination.

In the minimalist bedroom, there are usually no wardrobes for clothes, or they are very small in size.

Designing a wooden frame for later self-production, you can take this moment into account by placing a drawer in the lower part of the frame, or by making a frame with lifting mechanisms - the mattress will rise upwards, and the resulting space can be used up to 100%.

Drawing the conclusion

As practice shows, the material and labor costs for self-made skeleton of a bed made of wood are completely justified.

Assembly of the entire structure takes no more than three days, and the cost of the bed, given the mattress you acquired, is cheaper to two times compared with models from the furniture factory, to which the mattress needs to be bought separately.

In addition, you can control the quality of the assembly of your bed by checking it visually when making and practically using it.

Your bed will not disturb your sleep with an unexpected creak in the night silence, and if it does, you can easily eliminate the stimulus yourself by simply screwing up the required screw.
