Than the planed board is better edged?

When you want to get regular boards suitable both for consumables and for construction, take a log, not necessarily rounded, and cut it on both sides, cutting off the hump, and then making cuts perpendicular to the planes obtained. Obtained boards with relatively flat edges, however, sometimes they are present a certain amount of a panorama.

Completely different way of making a board planed dry. To begin with, the carefully dried log is cylindered, and then sawed on the same boards, which, in addition, are also brought to an ideal state on the planer.

Unlike many other sawn timber, the board we have has an ideal geometry, all corners at it correspond to 90 degrees, all faces and edges, as well as plates( planes in the language of carpenters) are made, as if on a ruler. Quite differently the situation is with the edged board, its edges can be with some error, but there can be no talk of smoothness.

Sticky chips and fibers, often left in your hands as splinters - this is common. Therefore, the planed board can be used both for finishing and for furniture production, and edging only goes to formwork or for roofing structures, less often it is brought to the condition by hand planing, although it's easier to take finished, processed boards.

How to choose the right planed sawn timber?

Any boards, both edged and planed, are made from different types of wood, and they are divided into sorts according to the wood used, depending on whether it is hard or soft, knobby or not. For example, deciduous boards are divided into the following varieties: extra( corresponds to 0 grade), A, B and C. In this case, 1 and 2 varieties of boards from pine are equivalent in quality to the hardwood grade A, pine grade 3 - the same as Blarch, and 4 corresponds to grade C.

In planed boards the moisture content should not exceed 10-18%, depending on the wood species.

There is also a division into classes, but there are only two of them, and they do not depend on the wood species - it's a rough and thin island. The first class includes 1 and 2 varieties, and to the second - 3 and 4. The variety of extra hardwood is generally outside the classes, because it is an elite material without a single knot or resin pockets. In terms of thickness, the planed sawn timber can reach 50 millimeters, the maximum length of such boards is 4 meters, the minimum is 2 meters, the step between the lengths is usually kept at 25 centimeters.

Where and what kind of dry planed lumber are used?

For all its excellent quality, the planed timber is relatively inexpensive, at least not much more expensive than the edging board. Use the same planed products of wood industry can be in a variety of areas of construction, decoration and even furniture production. For example, this board can be both structural and facing. Dry planed lumber can successfully become a floor covering, replace the lining( facing the walls in the gluing).

Finishing works are most often performed with boards of 1 and 2 grades, for furniture materials with finer gouging, that is, 3 and 4 grades are recommended. And if from the first two varieties are obtained magnificent fences and steps of stairs, both the inner and the inner ones, then from the radially-plaited planks of the second two varieties make elite furniture with a beautiful pattern of annual rings. Such boards are never covered with paint, they can be varnished or covered with special oils, or processed by waxing.

As for the use of planed sawn timber, in the open air, pine or larch is most often used, furniture can be made from any type of wood. In saunas, coniferous species are not recommended for the simple reason that they release resin from the heat. Despite excellent characteristics, boards after gouging need to be treated with various antiseptics for greater safety of the material.
