How to apply a primer - work technique and tools

How to apply a primer - first make a choice

Not only does the adhesion reliability distinguish the primed walls, priming also remarkably saves from fungus, mold and corrosion. High results are achieved by using a special chemical composition of the mixture. The substances included in it significantly reduce the porosity of the substrate and increase the level of adhesion of the subsequent deposited materials with the base surface. Some types of expensive primers also have leveling properties.

When choosing the primer volume, be guided by the fact that if the mixture is cheap and not very high quality, you may have to apply it several times in a row.

There are two types of primer mix. Reinforcing is applied to the plastered surface before painting or pasting. Deep penetrating is a more expensive option, which is used for small porosity, looseness and high absorption of the substrate, as well as for facade works that have excessive requirements.

Primer application depends on its kind - we disassemble

All primers are divided into several types:

  1. Acrylic - most preferred for self, home use. Easy to use, easily diluted with water and suitable for all surfaces, except ferrous metals.
  2. Alkyd - is made on the basis of alkyd resin and is used mainly with wood materials. Ideal as a base coat for painting wooden surfaces. But it can also be used for bonding with fiberglass, PVC, tiles and other materials.
  3. Primer for metal - designed to protect the surface from corrosion. For each type of metal uses its own primer.
  4. Primer for concrete - used as a fastening surface for subsequent enameling of the coating.

How to apply the primer correctly - get down to the business of

At the stage of preparing the surface for future work, a thorough knowledge of how to work with a primer can provide a significant, lasting and stable effect. First of all, prepare the substrate for applying the primer mix.

Using a coarse sandpaper and a hard spatula, remove the old coating, eliminate small errors, spools, clean the surface of possible rust, grease and dirt, and level out significant changes. If necessary, with large irregularities, use plaster.

To the main question - how to apply the primer - come up with all the thoroughness. Prepare the necessary tools in advance. You will definitely need:

  1. Roller for priming, it is most convenient to use two rollers: on a short handle and on a long stick.
  2. Wide brush for hard-to-reach places and corners.
  3. Priming container.
  4. Large spatula.

Add the required amount of primer to the selected container. If using concentrate, dilute it, strictly following the instructions.

Now, dipping the roller on a long handle into the prepared mixture, evenly distribute the primer over the entire surface. Instead of the roller, you can use a wide spatula. Make sure all areas are carefully painted. With a rough brush, treat all corners, places behind the battery, wall joints.

Repeat the procedure if necessary, and allow the surface to dry completely. Now you can proceed with the following repairs.
