Painting floors - advantages and disadvantages

To update the appearance of the flooring paint is used. This way is used both by the owners of apartments, and by the owners of non-residential premises. The main advantage of coloring the floor is the fact that the paint can be applied to any kind of surface: wood, concrete, gypsum, etc. At the same time, painting does not require the hiring of specialists or the use of special equipment. It can fulfill even one person.

Among other advantages of coloring the floor, it should be noted:

  • resistance of the coating in front of moisture, since most paints applied to the floor have moisture resistance;
  • paint creates a protective film on the floor, which protects it from various kinds of influences;
  • coating becomes easy to clean and can withstand any type of cleaning, both dry and wet;
  • the paint is applied quickly and does not require any special physical effort to carry it out; in addition, after the paint has dried, the floor is ready for further use;
  • this type of finishing is economical and affordable, therefore it is the most popular among alternative options.

Among the disadvantages of painting floors in the house, distinguish:

  • low level of thermal insulation, in winter walking on the painted floor does not bring comfort, so it requires the installation of rugs;
  • low level of wear resistance, this coating is not able to be used for a long time and requires periodic updating;
  • low drying speed, most paints dry for two to seven days, at this time walking on the floor is forbidden;
  • the appearance of the cover is quite simple, so when designing a special designer room, painting the floor will be inappropriate.

How to paint the floor - the process technology

The first stage of the work is preparatory. It requires removal of the old floor covering or other finishing materials, if any. In the presence of greasy spots on the surface, they are removed with the help of degreasing agents, such as white spirit.

When using wax for the purpose of rubbing the floors, it should also be removed. Do it better by using a solution of soda with water, in the proportion of a glass to seven liters of liquid. Next, apply the mixture to the floor surface and wipe off the wax with a stiff brush. Finally, rinse the floor with clean water and leave until completely dry.

In the presence of convex knots on the wooden floor, remove them with a chisel, and the hats from the fasteners drown a few millimeters deep and zashpaklyuyte.

Before painting, treat the surface with a primer or linseed oil, the latter option is suitable only for floors made of wood. If possible, wait a few days until the solution absorbs well into the surface and begins to perform the intended functions. If necessary, in the presence of a perfectly flat surface, it is recommended to treat the floor with putty, choose compositions with an oil base, they are distinguished by high wear resistance and will be kept on the floor for many years. Please note that the color of the putty should not differ much from the color of the floor. Apply the putty on the entire surface of the floor, eliminate irregularities or small defects. With the help of a skin, go through uneven areas. If desired, repeat these steps several times until the surface has acquired the desired appearance.

After the completion of the preparatory phase, a dyeing procedure follows, which will make the floor attractive in appearance and protect it from external stimuli.

Before starting work, pour the paint from the can and mix until the mixture has a uniform consistency and texture. Please note that the presence of lumps or small clots is unacceptable.

Use a paint tape to protect areas that do not require painting, but which are in direct contact with the floor. It is this material that will protect these places from the sudden ingress of paint.

Carry out staining in stages. First, apply the first layer of paint, after it has dried, apply another layer. The application of the second layer will make the surface more attractive and qualitatively colored. The second layer should dry for at least four days.

Tip: For repeated staining, one coat of paint should be applied to the surface, but if the floor is painted for the first time, then a minimum of two and sometimes three layers should be applied.

Please note that the application layer must be thin, otherwise, after a certain time it will deform and swell.

The wooden floor is painted horizontally by the movement of wood fibers. It is preferable to start work from the perimeter of the room, namely from the baseboard.

Dial a little paint, squeeze the brush against the edge of the tank where the paint is and apply it to the surface. Keep the brush tilted against the surface to be painted. Try to work smoothly - smears. The brush thickness is affected by the required thickness of the layer and its color saturation.

After painting the skirting boards, proceed to applying the paint to the entire surface of the floor.

Do it better with a roller. Start work from the corner areas:

  • , lower the roller into the paint bath;
  • soak it;
  • press on the embossed patch on the tub;
  • attach the roller to the floor and roll the paint over the surface.

Tip: Do not remove the roller from the floor until there is a little paint on it.

When the first coat of paint dries, inspect the surface for defects, and re-paint if necessary. The floor should not contain stains, drops from paint, stains, stains or marks from the roller.

Take care of cleaning the entire glued tape, the residues of varnish, oil on the floor. This is done with the periodic cleaning of the floor with a special solution, for the preparation of which you will need to dilute the water with vinegar. In this case, the addition of soap, powder, any cleaning agents or soda into this mixture is unacceptable, since this will significantly affect the attractiveness of the coating. If the appearance of the floor is satisfactory - proceed to its operation.

Wood floor painting

Wooden floors are environmentally friendly types of coatings that are able to maintain a healthy microclimate and indoor atmosphere, so their popularity is very high.

In addition, this type of flooring is characterized by strength, durability of use, resistance to many irritants. But at the same time, the wooden floor requires special care, and in particular, the processing of various kinds of antiseptics, impregnations, etc.

Before you start painting the wooden floor, care must be taken to select a quality material that will help keep it in use.

In relation to appearance, paints for wooden floors are:

  • transparent;
  • color.

The first option consists of varnishes or impregnations. Some of them contain special substances that contribute to a clearer expression of the texture of the tree.

Colored types mean the use of paints of various origins. Among them it is necessary to allocate materials:

  • polyurethane;
  • oil;
  • alkyd;
  • of acrylic origin.

The main functions of the impregnations are protecting the wood from fire or biological irritants in the form of fungi or mold.

Impregnations come in two forms:

  • antipirent;
  • biocide or antiseptic.

The first option makes the wood non-flammable and protects it from fire. Their use is associated with public, industrial or residential buildings.

The second contribute to improve the antiseptic properties of the tree and protect it from biological effects.

There are two types of impregnation:

  • surface effect;
  • of deep action.

Only the first version is suitable for applying to the floor with your own hands. Before applying the impregnation to the surface, it must first be cleaned and dried. To apply the impregnation, use a sprayer or brush.

Another type of impregnation is oil based. For their production, oil from wood or flax is used, as well as modified natural resins that strengthen and protect the tinting of the tree. The oil base is better absorbed by the tree, so it works more effectively.

Pay attention to such types of oils, in which there is no solvent. It is better, if the oil will have a natural basis and do not need to wait long for it to dry out. The use of oils is associated with rooms with high operating loads, such as corridors, living room or hallway. In addition, they are suitable for floor treatment in unheated rooms or in rooms with a high level of humidity.

If we consider the choice of varnish or paint, then here we must proceed from the individual characteristics of the premises and personal preferences of its owners. The varnish is less stable before exposure to mechanical stimuli in the form of shoes, heavy objects, etc., so its use as a floor covering is limited.

In the process of choosing a paint, pay attention to the environmental factor, the best option will be a water-dispersion-based material that does not contain organic solvents in its composition.

This type of paints is water resistant, good adhesion to the surface and color stability. To paint the floor in the kitchen or in the bathroom it is recommended to purchase acrylic based paint. It is more durable and resistant to moisture. To paint the parquet, use alkyd enamel.

Tip: When choosing the amount of paint, you should first find out the area of the painted room. On each bank with a paint is indicated its consumption per one square meter. In the calculation it is necessary to take into account the number of layers and to calculate the paint consumption.

Instructions for painting the floor with your own hands:

  • clean the floor, take care of the absence of dirt, dust, various stains on it;
  • stop and cover all cracks, wait for them to dry;
  • sand, sand and dry the floor;
  • apply antiseptic formulations and wait until they dry;
  • paint the floor with a selected varnish or paint.

Advice: Apply a second coat of paint, only after the first coat has dried completely. Otherwise, the paint is deformed.

The procedure for lacquer painting is practically the same as applying a paint. Although here and there are their subtleties. After applying the first layer, you should wait for it to dry, sand the surface and apply a second layer. With this technology, the coating will be perfectly even and pleasantly shiny. The varnish is applied in at least three layers.

Painting of a floor by a paint is carried out by various technologies, among which we will allocate three basic:

  • Covering of a wooden floor with the help of drying oil or a primer. Drying for three days. Application of paint, its drying. Application of the second layer and waiting for 3 to 6 days.
  • Putty surface using a mixture with an oil base. Alignment of cracks and other defects. Floor processing with small emery. Its putty and leveling. Application of paint in two or three layers.
  • Application of drying oil to the floor surface. Its drying and putty, which is carried out several times. Stripping the floor with a skin, priming it, drying and painting at least three layers.

2

Tip: When choosing the type of primer, consider the type of paint that will be applied to the floor surface. For example, when applying acrylic enamel, the primer should be acrylic.

Concrete floor painting: features and technology

The quality of the surface preparation directly affects the duration of operation of the concrete painted coating. The first thing to do is to remove dirt, debris, dust, old paint or bitumen from the floor.

Take care of the removal of concrete chips, seal and fill in small surface drops, if any. With a special grinder, grind the surface. This process will make the surface smooth and significantly improve the adhesion between the paint and the floor.

The use of a vacuum cleaner or a conventional mop will help to get rid of dust. To conduct dedusting of the concrete base, get the compositions of polymer origin. They will significantly improve the quality of concrete. To strengthen the concrete surface, use toppings - these are impregnations with a strengthening effect. Means with a hardening effect will increase the strength of the base and protect the floor from the appearance of dust for 4 years.

To ensure that the adhesion between the concrete floor and the paint is the best, use a primer. Among the great variety of this material, choose the composition, according to the type of paint that the surface will be treated with.

To apply a primer, use a foam rubber roller that promotes even distribution of the soil on the surface. Applying a primer requires adherence to a special technology:

  • needs to be mixed first;
  • so that the floor is not slippery, add a little quartz sand to the finished mixture;
  • , apply the compound with two or three layers.

After buying and choosing a floor paint, you need to determine the type of tool used in the job. This can be a normal brush, roller or spray. The deciding factor in this matter will be the paint, which will be applied to the surface.

The latter option contributes to the best application of paint. In addition, it is characterized by ease of execution, economy and a small amount of time that takes up coloring.

Then follows the drying of the floor, which is carried out under certain conditions. When carrying out this process, the room temperature should be about 19 degrees, and humidity - up to 86%.The floor dries within three to eight days, it all depends on the drying conditions and the type of paint. After drying, the coating is ready for further use.
