By roofing the metal profile with your own hands

When building a house or installing a garage, sooner or later the question arises as to how to cover the roof with a metal profile so that it lasts for many years and does not require constant repairs.

Let's first study the material itself, and then consider how to properly install it.

Profiled sheets are widely used not only for roof coverings, but also for facing the walls of a garage, a country house, or installing barriers.

For their manufacture, galvanized steel is used.

On top of the material is applied a protective coating, representing polymeric and paint materials, due to which the metal profile has such a long service life( up to 50 years).

Selection of the metal profile

The operating life of the roof depends largely on the correct material selection.

When choosing a metal profile, make sure that the width of the bottom shelves of the corrugated board is larger than the ridge( then the drain on the roof will be better).

On the side surface of the sheet there must be a special capillary trough, whereby the moisture that gets inside if the elements are not properly insulated, can drain out( note that the troughs are positioned correctly and are not damaged).

Before starting the installation, make sure that you have bought the material specifically for the roof( there is a metal profile for walls or fence).

If the profiled sheets are not correctly selected, the tightness of the structure, even with an ideal design of the installation, may be impaired.

List of safety rules for

If you are going to mount the corrugated board yourself, then before that you need to familiarize yourself with certain safety rules.

It's one thing when you mount the roof of a garage, and it's completely different when you are installing the roof of a 2-storey and 3-story private house. Improper handling of the material can lead to a threat to human life.

To prevent this situation, carefully read this list of rules:

  • Before you start laying, you must wear special protective gloves, they not only protect your hands from cuts and injuries, but also protect you from cold, keeping their mobility( which is especially important when working incold season);
  • Since the sheets of material differ in their light weight, they have considerable sail, so it is better to refrain from climbing to the roof on a windy day( they will follow the gusts of the wind and they will be difficult to hold in their hands);
  • Never install profiled sheets during rain or snow! The surface of the material when it gets wet becomes very slippery, and it is almost impossible to stay on it even if the slope is slightly sloped( if the fall from the garage may not be so dangerous, then if a fall from the roof of a 2-storey building, a lethal outcome is possible);
  • Do not lift several sheets with your own hands at once, it is better to spend more time on lifting by lifting them one by one( or using a special winch), but you do not deform them and avoid the danger of injury.

The last aspect is no less important than the previous ones, not only for reasons of safety of human health, but also because of the safety of the material itself.

The correctness of the coating depends largely on the integrity of the surface of the material, so the installation by your own hands should be carried out very carefully and walk on the already installed sheets only in shoes with a soft rubber or gel sole( hard sole can damage the polymer coatings and shorten the life of the metal profile).

Preparation of the crate

The installation of the roofing material is done on the lathing, which makes the structure more durable, preventing the deflection and the formation of cracks on the roof under the influence of negative weather conditions.

It is also necessary to fix the end board at the expected height of the roofing profile( later the end plates will be attached to it).

The chamfering installation will also have to be done on a special lath under which a layer of flooring made of wooden boards is made( the height should be level with the crate).

When making fastenings with your own hands, do not forget that for fixing the strip at the edges, first self-tapping screws are used, and the final fixing is carried out simultaneously with the installation of roofing sheets.

When assembling the rake, take into account the overlap of at least 20 cm( if you want to block the roof slat of the garage, then the joints of the razzhelobka should be smeared with a sealing mastic).

The video below shows the detailed process of fixing the roof crate.

As a waterproofing, as a rule, a layer of rolled ruberoid is used.

The laying starts on the ledge, and rises further to the ridge, creating an overlap of at least 15 cm( it is necessary that the material slackens a little).

When laying the roof of the house with your own hands, we should not forget about the insulation( for the roof of a conventional garage, this insulation can not be carried out).

As a warming layer, mineral wool can be used, laying out free spaces between the crate.

Mounting of metal profile

To begin installation of profiled sheets, the lower corner of the roof is taken.

The material must be overlapped, and fasten it to the crate, using self-tapping screws( self-cuts should be provided with special rubber seals to improve fixing).

Correctly conduct the installation of sheets according to the following scheme:

  1. Using self-tapping screws, we mount the first roofing sheet over the roof overhang( the metal profile should cover the overhang of the roof and hang over it about 4-5 cm);
  2. Put the next sheet and align on the edge of the first one;
  3. We connect the sheets together on the crest of the wave and fasten the screws every 50 cm.

In a similar way, cover the whole roof. The video below shows a clear sequence of work on the installation of metal profiles.

As you can see, you can install the profiled sheets yourself. For this, you do not need to have any special skills or special construction tools.

Just remember that to move on the roof should be extremely cautious, and you can only step on the already fixed sheets( put the feet in the grooves, resting on the beams of the crate).

Of course, if you have a desire, you can hire professionals to carry out roofing works, but it will not cost you that much.

Useful tips

The use of useful tips will greatly facilitate the work performed.

Remember that you can mount the roof from the end only on the gable roof, on the hip roof the installation of the metal profile is made from the center of the hip.

When installing profiled sheets, consider the roof slope.

If the angle of inclination is less than 15 degrees, the overlap of the sheets should be at least 20 cm( so that moisture can not get between sheets).

If the angle is more than 15-20 degrees, then the overlap is reduced to 15 cm.

If the roof is completely flat, then it is necessary to conduct additional sealing of the overlaps horizontally and vertically using a silicone sealant.

In order not to damage the material, it must be transported only in an upright position, otherwise it can bend and deform, thus becoming unsuitable for installation.

It is correct that the entire set of materials used is purchased from one manufacturer( profiled sheets, cornice and skate boards, etc.).

Then you will not have problems when docking components.

It is also better to purchase all sheets of metal at a time, because the same manufacturer of shades of colors in different batches of material may differ.
