How do you feel about your own home? Consumer or businesslike? When water is dripping from the tap in the kitchen, and when lights are switched on or sockets are used, sparks fly out - in such a house it is not very pleasant and even dangerous to live. Coping with many of the housework can be done on your own, if you are armed with the necessary tools and become familiar with the rules of work. Today we are talking about installing a double socket. It's a simple matter, but very responsible.

For sure, every person, even a child, knows what the outlet is and why it is needed. Without electricity it is impossible to imagine our life and if the outlet does not work, then turn on the iron, hair dryer and refrigerator will not work.

What is a socket

The outlet consists of several parts. The one that we see is the outer shell, and the "heart" or working part of the socket is hidden in the depth of the wall. The working part is connected to the electric wires passing through the wall to the terminals, which are additionally wrapped with several layers of electrical tape( for reliability and safety during operation).Everything is simple and straightforward, if you look at the standard socket and connection scheme. But, as you know, the world does not stand still and with it everything changes. So you can say about the sockets, replaced by standard devices for connecting to the electrical network of electrical devices came more advanced designs. To cope on their own with their connection, you need to know not only the circuit, but also the types of outlets. Let us dwell on this issue in more detail.

Sockets are divided into the following types:

  • overhead outlet - designed for connection to open wiring. It is installed directly on the wall on a wooden base( less often - plastic) in a specially designated place. Such outlets are obsolete, they can be found in multi-apartment houses "Khrushchevs" and "stalinkas", as well as in villages and dachas;
  • concealed or built-in socket for connecting internal wiring. The name speaks for itself - the socket is fixed in a specially prepared cavity and connected to electric wires;
  • device with terminal clamp - screw, convenient for connection, because the electric wire is simply clamped between the plates and screwed with a screw. Convenient, fast and reliable;
  • keyboard clamp - to fix the contact will have to use a spring, which is located on the terminal. If you press a special key, the plates move apart so that you can connect by releasing the key of the plate, firmly grasping the contact wires.

If you decide to replace the outlet in a living room, it is best to give preference to a socket with a clip and a screw.

If the connection types are clear, then when choosing sockets it is worth paying attention to single and double sockets. For example, a double external socket can be installed even in a single socket( junkette) or in different - a niche designed to install multiple outlets. For example, a double internal socket can be connected to both 1 and 2 pads, which are connected to each other or located near each other( on a bridge with conductors connected in parallel).

Assignment of sockets is also very important when choosing this device. So, on sale it is possible to see sockets for installation indoors, and also in the street.

Types of sockets and their function:

  • socket for outdoor installation - the housing is protected from moisture and dust. The degree of protection of such a socket is marked by the designation: IP 55 - protection from water and dust. Equipped with an additional lid to prevent water and debris from entering the plug socket;
  • outlet for rooms with high humidity( baths, saunas, kitchen, bathroom) - equipped with a housing that reliably protects the outlet from moisture and drops of water. Marking of such outlet is slightly lower - IP 44;
  • socket with additional functions - this is the fork ejector and grounding. As soon as you need to remove the appliance from the socket by pulling it, the springs located inside the socket housing are triggered and the plug easily exits the socket. This is very convenient, and also extends the life of the outlet. Grounding-grounding contacts are output to the socket housing, which must be connected to the grounding conductor. These sockets protect the user and electrical appliances from piercing currents that can "escape" to the plastic housing;
  • closed sockets - are irreplaceable for houses where small children live. In order not to install the protection and every time the appliance is switched on it is not removed and then inserted back, it is desirable to install a closed type socket. In her openings are hidden from prying eyes by curtains( they can be moved away when the appliance is switched on).If the child wants to insert a nail or other object into the socket, nothing terrible will happen, the holes will remain closed, since the curtains open only when pressed simultaneously;
  • programmed socket - for switching on and off, the device is equipped with a timer, which can be programmed for the duration of operation. So, if you set the timer for 3 hours, after this time, the electrical device will automatically turn itself off from the power. It is very convenient if, for example, in the morning rush you forgot to turn off the curling tongs or iron.

And a few words about the design of the sockets. Recently, these simple devices have changed a lot, you can pick up a rosette for the interior of the room, hide or vice versa, it is beneficial to emphasize this important and indispensable element.

How to connect a double socket

Let's first consider the standard connection scheme of the outlet to have a general idea of the scale of the operation:

  • it is necessary to de-energize the electrical wires by opening the switchboard and turning off the plugs( unscrew or lower the switch).If you do this for the first time, then it is best to carry out this work in rubber gloves;
  • now need to check whether you have done everything correctly and make sure that there is no current. This can be done in a simple and trivial way - to include in the outlet any electrical appliance: a desk lamp or a hairdryer. If the bulb does not light up and the hair dryer does not turn on, then you can start working. Or do this: check the current with a special indicator;
  • armed with a screwdriver, unscrew the plastic cover of the socket to remove the mounting clips and gently pull the working part of the outlet;
  • at this time can be carefully, so as not to damage anything, remove the old wires;
  • if there is a piece of wood( a box in the wall), then this place needs to be properly cleaned or even replaced the old box with a new one. Put the best basis for attaching the outlet to the alabaster or gypsum solution. In order not to damage the wires, it is best to remove them first;
  • preparation of electrical wires for fixing - we cut the wires to the required length, usually it is 7-10 cm, we remove the braid, we clean the ends with a sharp knife by a couple of centimeters, if necessary - we need to solder the ends. All, now you can connect the wires to the working terminals on the socket;
  • we twist the wires, we put them into the box, then to "plant" the core of the socket and attach it to the spade-box with screws. If your outlet has a different design - just bend the paws so that the working part of the outlet securely "sits" in a niche and does not hang out;
  • everything, with the basic work we have coped - further it is necessary to establish a frame, fix screws and it is possible to include plugs on a guard to check up work.

It seems that everything is simple and clear, but when it comes to business, it turns out that not everything is so easy. So that when you connect the outlet you do not have any questions, these tips will help you to solve the problem faster:

  • if there is no ground wire in your house, then the operation is simplified somewhat, since in this case it does not matter how to connect wires to the terminals(phase and zero).Just need to connect the wires without separating anything;
  • if your apartment has a ground, then the connected wires will not be 2, but 3. The task is somewhat complicated, since you need to understand which cable to select and connect everything correctly. For ease of use, each post is clad in a colored shell. The white, red or brown color of the wire is always the phase, black, blue or blue is zero, and green or yellow is the "earth";
  • what is the difference between an ordinary socket and the ground: the wire to the grounding cable must be connected to the terminal with protruding parts( antennae) that extend beyond the socket housing;
  • connection of the wire to the clamp terminal( screw), you can either simply extend it between two plates or turn it clockwise, on the side where the screw is screwed;
  • clean the ends of the wires according to the rules. The most acceptable way is to use a special tool to remove the winding, which does not snack the wire. Not every master has such a tool at home, so we will do everything well, but with the help of improvised tools. To remove the neat winding, you will need a knife and pliers. First, we cut the winding round with a sharp knife, carefully remove it. If the wire is solid, then the insulation should be cut as if you are going to sharpen a pencil. We do this as neatly as possible so as not to disturb the wire itself. The bare part of the cable must be sealed in order to extend the life of the outlet.

Now, when everything is clear with the rules for connecting a standard outlet, you can start a more complicated task - installing a double socket.

The double socket can be grounded or directly connected without a ground wire.

How to install a double socket. Subtlety of work:

  1. Double socket is a monolithic housing with two main units. The sockets at this outlet are also 2, but you need to install it in a normal podrozetnik.
  2. The total current when connecting any electrical appliance should not exceed 10-16 A. If this condition is not met for a double socket, it is better not to create such a situation and not expose yourself to danger.
  3. Before starting to work, you need to prepare a place for installing the outlet, think about where the electrical cable will pass, take out the wires and install in advance in the wall( make indentations) the cheeks. In addition, you need to buy sockets that are suitable for the interior of the room.
  4. Turn off the switchboard in the electrical panel( we twist or lower the toggle switch downwards).At this time, we do not stop, we immediately check whether there is a current in the socket. The standard way of testing is to use a special instrument - a milliammeter. If you do not have one, then you can simply turn any electrical device into an outlet and make sure that no current is flowing.
  5. Now carefully examine the double socket. It needs to be dismantled, we unscrew the screws and remove the overlay. You will see the heart of the outlet - or the mechanism. With it, and you need to work, that is - correctly connect a double socket.
  6. We leave wires 1 cm apart. Using a sharp knife, we remove some of the tape so that the wire itself is not damaged.
  7. The peculiarity of connecting a double socket is that you need to connect 2 sockets to one line of the wiring simultaneously. Draw conclusions: we need to connect one outlet select 6 wiring, and for the second lay a loop of 3 wires( main).
  8. As a result of the work done, it turns out that the socket, which is closer to the current source, assumes the voltage and on the loop( if it is an extension cable), transfers it further to the second source - that is, the second socket.
  9. When connecting the wires, you do not need to invent anything, since the color coding of the wires is always standard. That is, if you see black( red / brown) postings, then this will be the phase, zero is blue( blue), and green or yellow is the ground wire. We do the following: connect the wires "zero" / "phase" to the end terminals, only the ground wire( green / yellow winding) to the center terminal.
  10. If you are afraid of confusing something, then use a special screwdriver with an indicator, it will show where the phase is located.
  11. By checking yourself, you exclude the ignition of the wiring, short circuit and oxidation of metal wires.
  12. Complete electrical safety of the outlet can only be guaranteed if the wire is not broken, and the connection was made using a branch of electrical wires.
  13. If you did everything correctly, then at this stage you can tighten the screws and attach the outlet itself. To do this, firmly fix the working part in the niche, fasten the fastening elements and only after that it is possible to install the patch( decorative element).
  14. To attach the decorative part of the outlet, use a pencil and use the building level to mark a line on the wall. This is the only way to do all the work correctly and qualitatively.
  15. Since the cover is very fragile, then screwing the screws, do not fix them strongly so that the lid does not burst.
