Methods decorative wall finishing
There are many waysdecorative walls, ranging from elementary painting, finishing with frescoes and mosaics. The most pleasant thing in such a variety is that one can choose a method that satisfies aesthetic needs and financial possibilities. So, let's consider the basic ways of decorating walls.
Decorative plaster
Decorative plastering - a special composition for the design of walls. Depending on the nature of the ingredients, this plaster can produce completely different effects. If you decide to choose a decorative plaster, in addition to it you will need a lot of tools.
Basic tools and materials for working with decorative plaster:
- narrow spatula;
- wide spatula;
- decorative spatulas;
- drill with a mixer nozzle;
- roller;
- brushes;
- foam sponge;
- sandpaper №1 and №0.
It is quite easy to work with decorative plaster - it is enough to spread it evenly onto a clean, smooth wall. The principle of operation is exactly the same as for conventional plaster. Using a narrow or decorative trowel on a low plaster, you can make furrows or undulations to create an interesting effect. After creating the texture and complete drying of the plaster, clean the sharp corners of the surface with sandpaper.
As a protective layer, it is recommended to coat the plastered wall with water-based paint.
Decorative paint
Decorative paint provides unlimited possibilities to decorate, transform and change the interior. A variety of textures and colors turns heads, and performance characteristics allow the use of paints not only in living rooms and bedrooms, but even in bathrooms and kitchens.
Decorative paints have the following advantages:
- high aesthetics;
- long service life( from 10 years);
- ease of application;
- does not burn out in direct sunlight;
- are protected against mechanical damage( bumps, scratches, scuffs, etc.);
- high anti-corrosion properties( not prone to spoilage of fungus, mold);
- no joints as opposed to wallpaper;
- possibility of wet cleaning( especially useful in places around switches);
- variety of shades and textures;
- absolutely harmless to health( great for children);
- versatility( use in any premises);
- antistatic coating( does not accumulate dust).
But they have a couple of drawbacks:
- requires careful pre-treatment of the walls;
- high cost.
However, you will agree, these disadvantages simply fade to the advantages that you get after painting the walls with decorative paint.
Methods for decorating walls with conventional paint
For those who really want to replace the wallpaper with paint, but are shocked at the cost of designer decorative paint, there is an alternative. And, I must say, not the worst! Knowing some tricks, you can use the usual cheap paint to create a unique stylish interior, saving on construction materials.
Stippling
Stippling is the decorative painting of walls, which allows you to "age" the newly painted monophonic surface. By the way, stippling is suitable not only for decorating walls, but also for decorating furniture, so you can at the same time paint the cabinet or table, thereby creating a harmonious interior.
The only drawback of this method is that it emphasizes the shortcomings of the wall( unevenness, chips, cracks), so before preparing the decoration, carefully prepare the surface.
Stages of work:
- Cover the wall with any color you like and choose acrylic paint of contrasting shade. It is important that the acrylic paint creates a pleasant contrast, and not "cut your eyes."Otherwise it will be impossible to be in such a room.
- Cover the wall with a colored glaze knitted on the basis of the selected contrasting paint, and cover it with a wide flat brush. When the wall is completely covered with icing, gently touch the still-dried paint with the same brush. Thus, the traces of divorces from the bristles will become invisible, and the wall will acquire an interesting texture.
- With the face brush directed perpendicular to the wall, start to "poke" the fresh paint with light and unbalanced movements. So walk across the wall, periodically cleaning the icing from the brush. As you progress, you will see what kind of original effect is achieved by this simple action and will regulate the degree of "aging" of your wall. A smaller and more detailed effect of "aging" can be achieved by removing the decorative covering of the walls with a sponge, and not with an end brush. The only thing necessary to ensure that the sponge is always dry and use a hard side.
The effect of "Leather"
A very interesting design of the walls, which is great for finishing the office or a cozy living room.
Mechanism for creating the "Skin" effect:
- Clean the walls of the old wall with a damp rag to remove dust and small rubbish.
- Painting with adhesive tape, cover the areas that can not be painted( switches, sockets, skirting boards, etc.).
- Use a roller to coat the surface with the usual latex paint of the desired shade. If necessary, apply two coats and allow the paint to dry completely.
- Cut a piece of suede cloth into oblong pieces of breadth up to 10 cm in width. Assemble these strips in the manner of a sheaf, fold it in half and fix it with a rope or elastic band in place of the fold. As a result, a suede must be obtained.
- In a separate container, mix the glaze with the latex paint of a darker shade of color that you covered the wall with. Do not make a big contrast if you want your "leather" interior to look natural.
- Cover with a dark paint a small area of the surface. Since the glaze dries rather quickly, it is better to move gradually, working with separate fragments of the wall.
- Soak the brush in water and squeeze it hard. Gently touch the suede on the still not dried glaze, removing some of the wet coating.
- gently pat the places with pronounced lines with a slightly moist piece of suede cloth. So you "soften" the surface and give it a natural skin texture - with small folds, "pores" and irregularities.
To get the "Crocodile skin" effect, it is necessary to paint the walls with a decorative roller with the appropriate pattern. At the final stage, after creating small "wrinkles" and feathering, walk on the surface with a platen.
Venetian plaster effect
Venetian plaster with its beauty conquers everyone, but such repairs will be quite expensive. For those who dream of Venetian splendor, but can not afford such costs, we propose to recreate an effect that is indistinguishable from a real expensive decor!
For decorative painting of walls you will need ordinary latex paints, which can be found in any specialized store.
To create the effect of Venetian plaster, the following materials and tools are needed:
- latex paint;
- pigments for black or brown paint;
- large tray;
- plastic spatula.
The procedure for creating a decorative effect is very simple:
- Pour as much paint into the large tray as possible. It is better to fill up to the brim to mix paint as little as possible.
- On the one hand, add a small amount of pigment to the paint.
- Carefully stir the wand or the wooden end of the brush with the pigment, without leaving the conditional border of half the pallet. As a result, you should have a dark and bright side.
- Dip the spatula into a light paint and spread it over the wall. Apply the paint exactly the same as normal plaster - right-left, down-up.
- Dip the spatula into the dark paint and cover it with a piece of wall. As a result, dark and light areas should alternate on the wall, imitating the appearance of the Venetian plaster.
- When the wall is covered with dark and light spots, sweep the spatula from side to side to slightly shade the colors and give the coating harmony and uniformity.
To make a gradient, paint the top of the wall with only light paint, and the bottom - dark.
Useful tip: only a plastic spatula is suitable for creating the effect of Venetian plaster. The metal tool will damage the surface and will not give the desired result.
The effect of "Mint Skin"
The effect of "crumpled skin" is perfect for a bedroom or creating a relaxing environment in the living room.
For work you will need:
- painting tape;Tissue paper or newspaper;
- brush;
- paint for interior decoration.
This technique is easy to perform, but requires patience, because you can not paint the entire wall at once. First, paint a piece of a wall a little more than a sheet of tissue paper or newspaper( depending on what you use).Lightly remember the paper and attach it to a damp wall. Smooth the paper with your hands, giving the desired outlines and controlling the degree of "crumpling" of your future interior. After that, cover the paper with paint and proceed to the next section. Repeat the procedure until all the free space on the wall has run out.
In some cases, it is possible not to apply a base coat of paint if the walls are perfectly cleaned or covered with a layer of plaster. Use wallpaper glue and fix the crumpled paper on the wall in the manner described above.
Helpful hint: to hide the joints from the paper, tear it off the edges or, as you move, lightly apply a new piece of paper to the already processed one.
Also glazed finish on top of "crumpled skin" looks very beautiful. Use different shades of colored glaze to give the walls an interesting appearance.
Finishing the walls with a rag roller
A very interesting effect is achieved with a conventional rag roller. The room creates a warm cozy atmosphere, so this design is suitable for bedrooms and nurseries.
The essence is to add another textured colorful or glaze layer over a boring monochrome wall. In this one more charm of such furnish - it is possible to change strikingly an interior in a room with usual evenly painted walls.
For work you will need the following tools and materials:
- paint for interior work of several harmonious shades;
- rag roller.
First you need to coat the walls with a base layer of paint. As a small digression, we can say that the finish with a rag roller allows you to well disguise the irregularities, cracks and chipped walls, so too careful pretreatment is not required. Wait until the base layer dries completely.
While the wall dries, dilute the paint in a separate container with a harmonious but slightly contrasting hue. To check the saturation, apply the paint on a sheet of paper or a small section of the wall somewhere in the corner or below. Dilute water-based paint with ordinary cold water until you achieve the desired consistency.
Pure a clean rag into the diluted paint, but do not permeate it completely. Twist it into a bundle, evenly distributing the paint over the platen. Begin work from the top end of the wall, rolling down the fabric, twisted into a bundle. Do not forget to change the direction of movement by turning the roller at different angles to get a beautiful texture pattern.
