Primer for tiles - what does the market offer us?

Primer for tiles is divided into two categories: for absorbent surfaces( concrete, plaster, putty, brick) and for non-absorbent( ceramic tile, oil paint, metal structures).

Primer for deep penetration for absorbent surfaces serves to strengthen the base and provides good adhesion of the tile adhesive to the substrate. It is produced, as a rule, in the form of liquid concentrate.

Primer for non-absorbent surfaces simply increases the adhesion of the substrate( smooth surfaces become rough). It is usually produced in plastic buckets in the form of pasty mass.

Advantages of use of such compositions are that the time and laboriousness of preparation of the substrate for laying tiles are minimized, the adhesive properties are increased, which increases the quality of work.

The disadvantages of are the additional financial costs for the acquisition, and when unskilled workers perform the work, the opposite effect is possible: detaching the tiles from the wall almost immediately after laying it.

Primer for the tile - application to the absorbent surface

Before work, the surface is swept, if necessary, vacuum cleaner, from the walls covered with oil paint, using a small steel spatula, remove swelling easily peeling areas.

For the application of the composition, we will need the following tools: roller, special roller tray, which allows you to get rid of excessive primer on it, fly brush.

To apply a deep penetration primer to the absorbent surface, we perform the following actions:

  • Breeded concentrate is bred according to the instructions on the packaging with ordinary water. Then pour the resulting mixture into the tray.
  • We immerse the roller in the container, then lightly squeeze it and lightly move downwards from the top down, carefully making sure that it does not lie on the base with a thick layer. A thick layer is fraught with the fact that when it dries, a film forms on the surface, which easily peels off from it.
  • Then we wait for the complete drying, then we pass the palm over the wall, and if it is smeared, then we ground the surface again, and if not, then we prepare ourselves for laying the tiles.

It is necessary to pay attention to thorough washing of the roller and bath immediately after the termination of priming, because without this they, and especially the roller, will become unusable.

We process the non-absorbent surface

The primer for the tile to be laid on non-absorbent substrates should be applied as follows:

  • After opening the bucket, the primer must be carefully moved, as it consists of a polymer component and quartz sand that can separate, which is unacceptable.
  • Then, using a brush, apply the composition evenly to the base. The process is quite simple and does not require high qualification of the employee. Again, after finishing the work, the brush should be thoroughly washed, otherwise it will only be able to be thrown out after the drying of the soil.

This kind of soil is used quite rarely, and since it is sold in fairly large banks, most of the material, as a rule, remains and disappears. Therefore, many advanced builders use the following mixture as such a primer: a tile adhesive is used, on which the tile will be laid, and kneaded on the usual deep penetration primer to the consistency of liquid sour cream.

The resulting mixture is also applied to the floor with a brush and successfully replaces an expensive polymer primer with quartz filler.
