Stucco has always been a sign of wealth and luxury. And today the stucco elements of the decor are surely gaining popularity among the owners of mansions and apartments, wishing to arrange in their dwelling the semblance of Versailles.

This collection will discuss the installation of gypsum stucco. But, for starters, a little general information about stucco per se.
Stucco is usually made from raw materials, which can change its state from liquid to solid without cracking.
What makes the molding
- clay;
- gypsum;
- cement;
- fiberglass;
- metal;
- glass composites.
The last three materials are not standard base components for creating stucco molding, however details from them differ little from classic ones visually.
Characteristics of stucco molding of different epochs of art development
- Baroque epoch - gold, pink or turquoise background + white stucco( lion heads, flower ornaments, etc.).
- The era of classicism - flat relief frames and panels for the ceiling( garlands, heads of monsters, cupids, the flame of Hymen, the sphinxes).
- The period of modernism - plants and animals intertwined in bizarre ornaments, maritime themes, smooth lines of reliefs.
What is good for stucco molding?
- Environmental safety.
- Refractoriness.
- White color.
- Availability.
Stucco function
- Aesthetic .Stucco production, in this case, plays a purely decorative role, that is, simply decorates the interior. It can be columns in the front of the building, fantasy rosettes for chandeliers, various panels, the installation of which is usually carried out in the area of the stairs to the second floor or in empty niches. In some of today's mansions, built "in the old days", even the elements of the staircase are decorated with molded details, the installation of which is possible and with their own hands. Moreover, the instruction for assembling the stucco molding around the staircase is identical to the technology for installing it on walls and ceiling structures. Its standard steps are described below.
- Practical. Some stucco details "hide" various functional, but not very aesthetic things( wiring, a variety of purposes, openings, defects, etc.). In general, the role of special shields for various purposes is performed by cornices and moldings. Although this is their destination does not cancel the aesthetic component.
How to strengthen the stucco molding?
Previously, a mixture of glue and gypsum was widely used to join the stucco with the wall surface. But this mixture must be kneaded in certain proportions. It's troublesome and long. There is an excellent alternative to the "grandfather" method.
Today, the most practical glue is liquid nails. It is a material created from polymers and rubber, capable of withstanding heavy loads. Varied variations of this glue differ in setting time( 10-30 min.) And the duration of polymerization( up to 1 day), the content of additives. Therefore, you should carefully read the instructions before purchasing.
Types of stucco molding
- Semicolumns and columns. The diameter of these decorative details: 14-35 cm. They consist of three components. This is the base( lower part), the trunk and the capital( the upper part).
- Pilasters. The same half-columns, only not voluminous.
- Cornices. Elements, the purpose of which is the acculturation of the joint line of the ceiling and wall structures.
- Moldings. Similar to the earthen element, intended for the equipment of hidden lighting devices and other communication elements.
- Sockets. They play the role of ceiling decoration to create a fringing of lamps and chandeliers.
- Decorative wall stucco, for partitions, doors and grooves in the form of niches( various medallions and garlands).
- Overhead moldings for doors and walls.
Examples of stucco molding from gypsum can be seen in the photo below:
Mounting of stucco molding
What should be prepared?
- dry gypsum;
- water;
- dishes for mixing gypsum paste;
- form of PVC;
- spatula;
- sandpaper;
- putty on the basis of PVA;
- liquid nails;
- paint or other finishing material.
Progress of work
- Thoroughly dissolve dry gypsum, removing lumps.
- Dilute with water until creamy.
- Mix gently until smooth.
- Fill in the mold.
- Use a spatula.
- Leave for 10-15 minutes at a natural temperature for setting( hasty hardening using heated objects can cause cracks).
- After complete hardening, remove the molded part from the mold.
- Leave to dry for 2-3 days.
- Sand using sandpaper.
- Glue the part to the right place, using liquid nails( according to the instructions).
- Do this with all the details of the stucco pattern.
- Seal the joints with a PVA-based filler.
- Allow to dry.
- Recoat again.
- Apply the colorant to the moldings.
Features of staining and other types of stucco finish
Staining methods
- Classic. In this case the stucco is made of the same color as all the main elements of the interior.
- Modern. It all depends on the flight of fantasy. Contrast solutions, gradient painting and even multi-colored options are all permissible.
Other ways of finishing the stucco
- Patina or wax coating. In addition to giving the stucco with an original textured surface, this coating also plays a protective role, protecting the gypsum strata from harmful external influences and mechanical damage.
- Simulation of a variety of textures by using special dyes and auxiliary substances applied by a sponge or cloth( for lack of a special sprayer).Outwardly, such stucco molding will resemble an artificial stone.
The main types of paints used for finishing the stucco molding
- Mosaic dyes. Inside such paints are capsules of different shades, bursting during application, creating a marble effect. The size of the capsules determines the final pattern. For application it is better to take a nebulizer.
- Fluorescent dyes. With their help an interesting glow effect is achieved in the dark. In the light of stucco molding it does not differ from the classical one.
- Pearlescent dyes. Coating from such paints gives the stucco effect of "chameleon", it looks different from different points and from different viewing angles. Such a dye can be applied with a pistol sprayer, a roller, a sponge or a brush.
Creative effects that are obtained by applying the latest staining techniques
- Artificial aging. To obtain a similar effect on the gypsum surface, apply a circular dab of paint on the lime base, using a brush with a long pile. The paint, drained into the cavities of the volumetric pattern, seems darker than on the protruding parts. For greater effect, the paint on the outstanding elements can be wiped with a rag. After waiting for complete drying, the "aged" stucco is opened with wax.
- "Watercolor" effect. This visual illusion is achieved by applying to the dried main layer of paint one shade of a layer of paint of a different color, washed out even before solidification so that both stains of different tones are visible on the stucco. The texture of the drawing depends on the use of a variety of instruments( a piece of foam rubber, a platen in a suede case, a brush, a piece of cloth, crumpled cellophane).
- The effect of "artificial leather".Stucco is stained and allowed to dry a little( not to the end).Then, the embossed pattern is covered with crumpled polyethylene or suede, without leveling and allowing to dry. Then the covering layer is removed, and the drawing "under the skin" is ready!
- Simulations of wood texture will help to achieve a special roller.
- Simulation of the marble texture is achieved by applying to the dried stained stucco small spots of contrasting paint and fast joining them with a goose feather.
The installation of the stucco is not so complicated in implementation, provided that modern techniques and raw materials are used. However, this process is laborious and requires some skill and patience. However, not holy pots mold. ..
